Chapter 11 The Ghost of the White Family
Chapter 11 The Ghost of the White Family (Seeking Investment!)
"Did you get it?" Salomon looked up and asked. At that moment, he was hiding in a secluded alley in Selin Town with the panting Little Wang Mage. Ignoring the stench emanating from the garbage and vomit scattered all over the alley, he asked Little Wang Mage anxiously.
"This is...this is the first time I've ever stolen anything." Little Wang kept patting his chest, seemingly trying to calm his heart, which was pounding in his throat. This behavior was still too exciting for him. But when he took a deep breath, he was choked by the stench in the alley and gagged uncontrollably.
"Actually, our actions were more like robbery." Salomon blinked innocently, then patted Little Wang's back. "Hopefully, no cameras have captured you, otherwise, next time you go out, a few policemen might show up in front of you. Given the racial issue, they might shoot after a slight warning, so I suggest we prepare protective spells before going out next time. What? Me? Don't worry, I've been covering my face the whole time. Oh, I regret choosing this place, it stinks."
Nearby, the crowd, their vision gradually returning from the dazzling light, continued their commotion, while Ricky White began to shout. Even though he couldn't see, the sensation of his ring being snatched from his finger was still vivid; he felt a chubby hand grab his wrist without warning, forcefully opening his palm, and then his ring was gone. It was a family heirloom of the White family; ever since he wore it, he had never suffered any misfortune, not even a scratch on his skin when sharpening pencils as a child or shaving as an adult.
Now, Ricky White has bruises on his wrist, which may be the worst injury he has ever suffered.
A senator publicly pulling down his pants and a senator being robbed on the street are two different things. The former can be treated as a joke—politician scandals are something everyone enjoys—while the latter is a matter of a politician's safety. The situation quickly escalated, and Salem police immediately took control of everyone present, including uninformed journalists who were still advocating for press freedom. The police forcefully pinned these clueless fools to the ground.
Salomon and the young mage escaped unscathed because they left earlier, but if they were still wandering around Salem, it would only be a matter of time before they were found.
"Here it is." The young monk Wang finally caught his breath. He opened his palms and said in a muffled voice, "It's right here."
This is a platinum ring with a large pink gemstone. The gemstone's base has a grid-like pattern, and two smaller pink round gemstones are set at the front and back of the oval pink gemstone. Between the oval and round gemstone bases, a total of four smaller pink gemstones are set. These gemstones have a deep pink color, and Salomon, with his limited knowledge of gem identification, identified them as pink diamonds. The weight of the gemstones on this ring far exceeds the category of "expensive." Even the gemstones on the pink diamond flower brooch owned by Queen Elizabeth II of England may not be as large as those on this ring.
"Alright, I think we can leave now. Put it in my pocket." Salomon nodded. Although he knew how to use the portal magic—which was somewhat comical—they hadn't arrived via portal, but rather by long-distance bus. It was a necessary evil, as he couldn't use many of the Vishanti's spells before acquiring a large amount of Vishanti magic.
The young monk poked his head out of the alley, preparing to lead Salomon away from this awful place. He couldn't stand breathing through his mouth anymore; he felt that if he stayed any longer, he would throw up every single sandwich he had eaten. When he waved back, signaling Salomon to follow, he received no response.
He felt a chill creep up his spine, goosebumps rose on his skin, and he couldn't help but shiver. This feeling was very familiar; he had experienced it once before, when he was at the British Museum, when he was getting the ring from Salomon.
"I knew it wouldn't be that easy," he muttered. Then, he heard a deafening crash behind him and was thrown forward by an irresistible force. As he scrambled to his feet, brushing the leaves from his face, he saw that the once narrow alley had widened considerably, the stone bricks at the entrance appearing as if shattered by something. And this continued. Salomon frantically dodged and weaved through the alley, clutching his head. Shattered stone bricks rained down on him from all sides and from above, striking him relentlessly. He couldn't stop; he could only keep dodging, for something intangible in the air was venting its fury, wanting to smash everything around it.
Of course, this also includes Salomon.
Passersby gasped in surprise, and the police also turned their attention to the scene. Ignoring the stares of the onlookers and the tense police presence, Master Wang shouted urgently, "Come out! Salomon, come out!"
"No!" Salomon glanced around at his surroundings. Skeletal ghosts dressed in old-fashioned clothes and shrouded in pink magic were ramming into him with their bodies. He could only roll away to avoid the attack, ignoring the sharp broken bricks on the ground.
"Heretics! Thieves! Sorcerers!" These ghosts, their rotting faces devoid of expression, roared in voices inaudible to ordinary people, "Return what you have stolen from our families!"
"Fuck you!" Salomon, in the midst of his busy work, raised his middle finger and fiercely retaliated against the ghosts. Of course, it was only mental; he didn't have time to chant any spells. Those ghosts were not to be trifled with either. Taking advantage of Salomon's distraction, they slammed an entire brick hard into his back.
Despite the falling bricks and stones, Master Wang rushed in, tucked Salomon, who was lying on the ground, under his arm, and ran out of the alley.
"Are they still there?" he asked Salomon as he ran, his legs aching.
"If...if you put me down...I can...kill...them!" Salomon responded in agony, his abdomen being squeezed hard with every word he uttered, making it impossible for him to breathe properly.
"Gently, gently, put me down!"
"No! Not here!" the young mage said haltingly, "We can't reveal our magic..."
"I...I thought...we...Karmar-Taj...wasn't...the Ministry of Magic..."
However, these ghosts were no ordinary ghosts. Unlike the deformed, twisted, and mindless spirits in the British Museum, these ghosts resided within the rings. They survived by relying on the power within the rings and protected each generation of the White family. Their power was far greater than that of ordinary ghosts. On their pursuit of the young sorcerer and Salomon, they not only smashed the windows of many shops along the street and shattered the asphalt, but even overturned several cars. It was as if an invisible monster was rampaging through the streets, with the sounds of ping-pong balls echoing everywhere.
However, the weaknesses of ghosts never change, even for the most powerful ones. Fire and lightning are always the weaknesses of spiritual beings, and physical attacks caused by magic can also harm their bodies.
"This is it." The young mage ran to a sparsely populated spot, a narrow gap between two abandoned buildings. He had come to this place entirely at Salomon's own request. Salomon repeated himself several times, in great pain and with difficulty, before he understood. The young mage, disregarding the fact that his magic couldn't be revealed, could only choose the most secluded spot possible.
When he arrived at his destination, he simply threw Salomon down and leaned against the wall, panting. He felt like his lungs were on fire, and the tinnitus and nausea made it almost impossible for him to breathe.
"Thud—" Salomon was slammed to the ground. The little mage's actions earlier had almost shaken his brain. But he didn't have time to complain. He just hurriedly stood up, swayed a few times, ignoring the pain in his back and abdomen, and didn't even have time to brush off the dust. He then concentrated and began chanting the incantation.
Salomon found Kamar-Taj's melee training useful for the first time, as it allowed him to become accustomed to pain, rather than simply having to interrupt his spellcasting due to injury. Casting spells in combat was something every mage in Kamar-Taj could do.
There is one spell that Salomon particularly favors: a spell that releases the most primal magical energy. Due to the spell's unique nature, unless the target uses magic to defend against it, this tracking spell will always hit. If a mage faces a non-caster enemy and doesn't know the target's weakness, this spell will be the first choice.
That's right, that is—
"Magic Missile!"
