Wizard Earl

Chapter 872 Border Town

After a bumpy three-and-a-half-hour train ride, Connor, disguised as a red-haired, one-eyed middle-aged man, arrived in the city of Vladi.

Vladi is a typical border city that developed because of trade. The city has a very frequent flow of people, and all sorts of people from different walks of life mingle here. It is difficult for the laws of the Kaman Empire to restrict and protect everyone.

After observing the situation in the city, Connor found a room on the second floor of a hotel called "Grandma Max's Hotel" and checked in.

Sitting in the guest room, looking at the simple but clean and tidy bed and sofa, Connor nodded slightly. He didn't come to Vladi to act like a big shot; he came to kill and rob, so as long as the living conditions weren't too bad, he didn't care!

Connor glanced at the tortillas and vegetable soup that the hotel had delivered—free of charge but with a rather pathetic appearance—frowned slightly, casually tossed them to a beggar on the street, and then stood on the balcony of his room, seemingly casually observing the situation on the street.

Although it was already past eight o'clock in the evening, and the sky was dark with a blood moon hanging high, the streets were still bustling with people, making one want to hurry.

Standing by the window, Connor casually observed the flow of people on the street, but in reality, his gaze was quietly focused on a burly, bearded drunkard sitting in the corner of the Costa Tavern across the street.

The reason Connor stayed at "Grandma Max's Inn" and chose this inn on the second floor was all because of the drunkard in front of him. If Connor remembered correctly, this drunkard's name was Batshuayi, and he had the cultivation of an intermediate wizard apprentice. He was a broker, and this Costa Tavern was a base for him to trade with people.

After observing the drunkard Batshuayi for a while, Connor left the inn without making a sound and went into the Costa Tavern. He sat down at a table behind the drunkard with an air of nonchalance. When Connor sat down, Batshuayi continued to drink from his jar, but he was glancing at Connor, who was disguised as a red-haired, one-eyed middle-aged man, out of the corner of his eye.

As a first-level wizard, how could Connor be discovered by Batshuayi, a mid-level wizard? So Batshuayi secretly observed Connor for a few seconds and, finding nothing on Connor, continued to enjoy his food and drink, quite content.

"Sir, what would you like to eat?" Seeing Connor seated, a short, stout waiter approached with a beaming smile and asked Connor.

"One serving of Odin's stew with potatoes, three flatbreads, and a bowl of borscht!" Connor, disguised as a red-haired, one-eyed middle-aged man, said in a hoarse voice.

"Understood, I'll bring it to you right away, sir!" Upon hearing what the red-haired, one-eyed man in front of him, who looked like someone not to be trifled with, wanted, the short, stout waiter responded and quickly left.

Since Connor only wanted ordinary things and didn't need any special preparation, the food was served quickly, in just a minute or two.

"Consider the extra money for the meal a tip!"

Connor casually tossed a one-shilling note to the comically short, chubby waiter, and amidst the waiter's thanks, began to devour the food on the table.

While these things couldn't compare to what Connor ate at the Grand Hotel in Frosinone, Rune, they were definitely much better than the tortillas and vegetable soup Connor had just seen at "Grandma Max's Hotel".

After eating two large pancakes, and seeing that Batshuayi behind him had relaxed his guard and was no longer wary of him, Connor knew it was time to get down to business. He immediately transmitted his voice to the drunkard behind him, saying, "Batshuayi, I was introduced by Cornelius from Frosinone. I want to buy a ticket from you to attend the Blue Stone Auction!"

Hearing the voice transmission from the red-haired one-eyed man behind him, whom he had deemed harmless, Batshuayi, the drunkard, paused noticeably as he was about to bring the wine jug to his lips. However, he remained calm and showed no signs of panic. The next second, he nonchalantly began to gulp down the wine.

After downing half the wine in the jug in one gulp, Batshuayi reluctantly placed it back on the table. This middleman, being somewhat tactful, didn't ask who Connor was or what his purpose was at the Blue Stone Auction. Instead, he casually inquired via telepathy, "Are Cornelius and his wife doing well at their house on Kinuzai Street?"

"Cornelius has no wife, and he doesn't live on Januzaj Street. He lives in the town of Jiménez, on the western outskirts of Frosinone!" After taking a sip of borscht, Connor didn't hesitate to directly test Batshuayi, that drunkard.

Batshuayi's acting was quite convincing. If Connor hadn't searched him, Cornelius, that unlucky guy who tried to rob him, might have actually fallen for his trick.

Upon hearing Connor's words, Batshuayi glanced back at Connor and then transmitted his voice, "Cornelius told you the rules, right?"

Without using telepathy, Connor silently tossed a small cloth bag containing five magic stones, which he had prepared in his spatial ring, to Batshuayi behind him. Batshuayi caught the magic stones without changing his expression and telepathically told Connor again, "Rent a carriage around this time two days from now and go to the public cemetery in the north of the city. Someone will be waiting for you there!"

Having found the rendezvous point, Connor finished off the food on the table, wiped the grease from his mouth, and left the tavern. He returned to his room at Grandma Max's Inn across the street.

Back in his room, Connor lay on the bed to rest and recharge. The reason he chose to come to the border city of Vladi to pull off a heist was because three months ago, after a wizarding gathering in Frosinone, Connor inadvertently lost some money and was ambushed by two intermediate wizarding apprentices.

Although they were ambushed, two mere intermediate wizard apprentices were no problem for Connor, a first-level wizard. However, out of curiosity, Connor used a soul-searching spell on one of them before killing him.

The intermediate wizard apprentice whose soul Connor searched was Cornelius, who had just appeared in Connor's conversation with Batshuayi. From Cornelius's memories, Connor learned that in the border town of Vladi, there existed a small dark wizard organization called the William Psionic Society, which had created a place called the Blue Stone Auction.
