Chapter 45 The Cards of Fate
Chapter 45 The Cards of Fate
Seeing the light shining through the glass windows of the house, and then glancing at the tightly closed door, Connor, his face deathly pale, hesitated whether to kick the door open.
Connor overlooked one problem: he was currently wounded by a gunshot. Although he had drunk the blue potion given to him by Varga, which temporarily suppressed the gunshot wound, he was still injured and his speed was naturally not comparable to that of normal times. Moreover, most importantly, in order to avoid attracting attention, Connor dared not take a public carriage. Therefore, the journey, which should have taken half an hour, still took Connor forty minutes to reach Varga's residence despite his best efforts.
These forty minutes, plus the ten minutes spent cleaning up the scene, mean that there are only ten minutes left before the blue potion runs out of energy and Connor's injury relapses, as predicted by the chip. Connor can already feel the gunshot wound in his chest becoming more and more painful, and it seems that the injury will flare up again at any moment!
"Who are you?" Just as Connor was about to kick open the door, Varga's slightly trembling voice came from inside.
Upon hearing the voice, Connor was overjoyed and blurted out without hesitation, "Valga, it's me, Connor Ferguson! Open the door!"
"Click!"
As the door opened, Varga, petite and holding a kitchen knife, exclaimed in alarm, "Connor, what happened to you? Your chest is bleeding!"
"It's okay, it's okay, let me in!" The signs of the gunshot wound in his chest were becoming more and more obvious. Waves of pain assaulted Connor's nerves. Large beads of sweat had appeared on Connor's forehead, and he was even experiencing some hallucinations. Connor was now resisting the onslaught of pain entirely with his willpower.
Seeing that Connor was so badly injured, Varga quickly threw aside the kitchen knife she used for self-defense and went to help Connor up.
"Varga, I've been shot in the left chest... Could you please treat it for me in a bit..." Connor said weakly, his voice broken.
"Connor, hang in there! I'll take you to the hospital right now." Varga's face turned pale with anxiety, and tears welled up in her beautiful eyes.
"Beep beep beep beep! Emergency! Emergency! The main body's gunshot wound is expected to recur in ten seconds, and the main body will fall into a coma in fifteen seconds!" In Connor's mind, the auxiliary chip gave the final warning.
"Silly girl, listen to me and don't interrupt me! I can't go to the hospital, so just do your best here. Even if I die, it's my bad luck and I can't blame anyone else. Remember to keep this a secret! Don't call the police or the church!" Feeling the hallucinations in front of him growing stronger, Connor gritted his teeth and bit his tongue hard, regaining his last bit of clarity. Without waiting for Varga to hear him clearly, Connor finished speaking in one breath.
Connor had barely finished speaking when, less than a second later, everything went black and he collapsed to the ground. The last thing he remembered was the pitiful scream of the petite Varga beside him.
"No!"

Reyes Villa, next to Green University
"What? Connor Ferguson is missing?" Reyes, dressed in a magnificent black robe in the study, had lost his gentle smile. He frowned and questioned old Victor, who stood before him, in a stern voice.
"I'm sorry, Professor, it was Victor's fault for not doing his job properly. Please punish him." Sensing the hostility in Professor Reyes's tone, old Victor felt a chill run down his spine and quickly lowered his head.
"Tell me what happened!" Reyes said in a deep voice, lightly tapping his fingers on the desk.
"Yes, Professor. Things were going smoothly at first. Connor decisively took down that bastard Joseph. But just as I was about to have him deal with Joseph's wife and children, three arbitrators from the Church of Storms—one senior apprentice and two intermediate apprentices—suddenly arrived at Joseph's house. To prevent Connor from revealing his identity, I told him to take advantage of the chaos and leave first, while I dealt with the three arbitrators. I killed two of them, including the senior apprentice, but the other arbitrator escaped..." Wiping the cold sweat from his brow, Old Victor recounted the whole story:
After listening to old Victor's words, Reyes remained silent for a long while before continuing, "Have Bispin and his men settled in?"
Seeing that Professor Reyes had changed the subject and wasn't pressing Connor further, old Victor's tense heart finally relaxed. Without hesitation, he said, "Inform the professor that Mr. Bispin and his men have all been settled in their location, and the weapons have been delivered. They are ready to move out at any time!"
"Very good, old Victor. From now on, I will personally oversee the situation with Bispin. Victor, you step down and focus all your efforts on finding Connor Ferguson. Find him alive or dead. Do a good job, old Victor! Don't let me down!" Professor Reyes stared at the old man before him and said calmly.
Although Professor Reyes' tone was calm and showed no sign of anger, old Victor, who knew Reyes's ways all too well, had just breathed a sigh of relief but immediately tensed up again. He took a deep breath and said firmly, "Professor, please rest assured, Victor will definitely find Connor!"
Reis nodded, said nothing more, and waved his hand, indicating that Victor could leave.
After old Victor bowed and left, Reyes pondered for a while, and suddenly a white light flashed in his hand, and a crystal card appeared in his hand.
After carefully examining the crystal card in his hand for a while, Reyes slowly opened his mouth and whispered, "A card of destiny from Byzantium, tell me, is Connor Ferguson still alive?"
As soon as Reyes finished speaking, the crystal card in his hand, which he called "the card of destiny from Byzantium," burst into brilliant light.
When the light faded, a lifelike divine bird, with feathers partly gold and partly crimson, resembling a giant eagle, appeared on the card.
Seeing the divine bird appear on the jade tablet, Reyes's lips curled into a satisfied smile. He muttered to himself, "An immortal bird? Looks like this little guy Connor has escaped unscathed this time."
Having received good news from the "Fate Cards," Reyes didn't stop there. After a moment's hesitation, he spoke again solemnly, "Fate Cards from Byzantium, tell me what Bispin is doing... will he succeed?"
