Chapter 333 The Great Hermit in the City
"Sir, here is your Lille steak and Bauhinia rum. Please enjoy!" In a luxury hotel on the banks of the Mallorca River, a neatly dressed and smiling waiter placed the food, meticulously prepared by the chefs, from a cart onto the table and respectfully addressed the young man in a well-fitting trench coat who was gazing at the night view of the Mallorca River outside the hotel's floor-to-ceiling windows.
"Oh..." Connor nodded slightly, casually taking out a five-shilling note from his wallet and tossing it onto the table.
"Thank you, sir!" Picking up the five shillings from the table, the already smiling waiter's smile became even brighter! Customers usually tip 10% of the bill. Connor's bill was about three pounds, so he should have received a maximum of three shillings in tip. The extra two shillings made him even more grateful to Connor.
Faced with the waiter's heartfelt gratitude, Connor simply waved his hand, indicating that the waiter could take the tip and leave. From beginning to end, his gaze never left the huge floor-to-ceiling window beside him.
"Please feel free to call me if you need anything, sir!" the waiter said respectfully to Connor before leaving.
"This is really interesting..." Connor sighed as he looked out through the huge floor-to-ceiling window next to the dining table at the docks, warehouses, and residential areas along the Mallorca River, dotted with lights.
After receiving Margaret's letter, he came here. The county of Mallorca is named after the Mallorca River, which runs through the city and connects to the Ocean of Storms. Sixty percent of the economy of Mallorca depends on the Mallorca River.
Connor's current vantage point offers the best view of the Mallorca city at night, with the Mallorca River flowing through the city laid out before him. Of course, Connor's excellent location isn't free; even if you don't order anything, you still have to pay the hotel an extra five shillings for the seat.
First, he poured himself a glass of rum to moisten his throat, then picked up his knife and fork, slowly cut off a piece, and put it in his mouth.
"Hmm... It really is Lille steak!" Connor felt a pleasant surprise as he savored the tender texture of the steak in his mouth. When he ordered Lille steak from the menu, he was only focused on observing the other side from this best spot and had no intention of eating authentic Lille steak, which was only available in limited quantities at star-rated hotels like those in Rune, in a small place like Mallorca.
While enjoying his meal, Connor once again turned his gaze to the night view outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. His destination in Mallorca was a warehouse on the banks of the Mallorca River, not far from where he was now. If it weren't for the address Margaret had given him, Connor would never have believed that the Church of Storms' secret warehouse was located there!
The busiest and most bustling area in Mallorca is right here at Connor's feet, along the banks of the Mallorca River that runs through the entire city. It's filled with warehouses and docks, with at least a hundred ships coming and going every day. A conservative estimate puts the daily foot traffic at least ten thousand people. The Storm Church's secret warehouse is incredibly daring. One wonders if the people who decided to put it there knew about the old Chinese saying, "The truly great hermit lives in the city," from another world.
After carefully studying the location of the secret warehouse, Connor had to admit that setting it up on the banks of the Mallorca River, a place where so many people gathered every day, was a bold move, but it was indeed a very good choice!
According to people's conventional thinking, the word "secret" immediately conjures up images of quiet and remote places, and people would never associate a secret warehouse with a place with such a dense flow of people every day. Secondly, the location of the secret warehouse is only a ten-minute walk from the Storm Church's Mallorca branch, which is a normal adult male's walking distance. If it were those two intermediate wizard apprentices in the branch, Connor estimated that as long as he attacked the secret warehouse, they would probably arrive in two minutes after the commotion started!
Connor had been in Mallorca for two days and had already inspected the area around the secret warehouse. He discovered that the protective magic array Margaret had mentioned wasn't just incredibly strong; its concealment was also excellent! If Connor Ferguson hadn't been an alchemist and hadn't seriously studied magic arrays, even if he had obtained the address from Margaret, he probably wouldn't have discovered the secret warehouse's significance. He might have even thought that this secret warehouse of the Church of Storms was just an ordinary warehouse on the banks of the Mallorca River!
Based on his knowledge of magic arrays, Connor came to a conclusion about the protective array of the secret warehouse. Under normal circumstances, if he exerted his full strength and did not care about the noise and impact, he could break the protective array in about five minutes. However, if he did that, not to mention the loss of his magic power from breaking the array, he would be facing two intermediate wizard apprentices who came from the branch to reinforce the secret warehouse, and two junior wizard apprentices who were guarding the secret warehouse, for a total of four wizards!
Even if Connor were to unleash his power and kill all four of those guys, loot all the Black Rock Grass from the secret warehouse, and successfully sneak back to Rune, given the Storm Church's consistently assertive nature, they certainly wouldn't stand idly by after causing such a commotion. In that case, the Storm Church would definitely launch a massive investigation into Connor.
If the secret society stopped providing Blackrock Grass to Varga and there was no way to obtain it from other places, Connor might have really taken a desperate gamble and started a massacre in order to refine the secret potion and break through to the advanced martial arts apprentice level. But now, it's really not worth taking such a big risk just to get the Blackrock Grass essence two months earlier!
Therefore, even if it involves accessing the secret warehouse, a direct assault is absolutely not advisable; the only option is to try and outsmart them...
After finishing his Lille steak and Bauhinia rum, Connor picked up a napkin from the table, wiped his mouth, called for the bill, and then tossed five one-gold-pound notes from his wallet onto the table. He then got up, walked out of the hotel, and disappeared into the darkness of Mallorca. He was very satisfied with the meal, so he didn't mind paying an extra one or two gold pounds.
