Chapter 309 Hector
Chapter 309 Hector (Part 1)
Connor reached out and caught the document steadily from mid-air. Completely surprised by Margaret's action, Connor glanced at the document cover, and his pupils immediately shrank to the size of pinholes.
The document was inscribed with runes representing the Church of Storms, and below the runes were the words "Church Document No. 11" in large characters. Next to the large characters was a line of smaller text: "Viewed by those with first-class clearance; revocation of cultivation and life imprisonment!"
Taking another deep breath, Connor looked up at Margaret. There was no doubt that the document in his hand was a secret document of the Church of Rune Storms. Moreover, judging from the small print on the document, the level of secrecy of this document was not low, otherwise it would not have written "abolition of cultivation and life imprisonment" as a punishment measure that was second only to execution.
"Take a good look! That demonized knight is just an errand boy; he wouldn't know much about their transformations!" Margaret seemed satisfied with Connor's reaction and said calmly.
Hearing Margaret's words, Connor was even more shocked. Margaret was right. That fat humanoid beast—no! It should be called a demonic knight—began to tell Connor what he wanted to know after Connor briefly shielded him from one of the perception restrictions.
This is what he said about his current state: They are human beings, and they became like this for reasons they themselves cannot explain. His original name was Hector, and his strength was only that of a regular knight. Because his strength improved slowly when he trained alone, he wanted to improve his strength quickly in order to change his life and class. So, five years ago, by chance, he joined an organization called the Salok Knights in order to receive guidance from a great knight!
In the world of knights, things like Hector's are common. For a formal knight, their talent is not mediocre, and their knight breathing technique is not bad. As long as they persist in training diligently, becoming a formal knight is not easy, but it is not difficult either. There are many examples in the knight world of becoming a formal knight by studying a knight breathing technique without the guidance of a teacher.
However, after becoming a formal knight, without the guidance of a teacher or the support of money, it is extremely difficult to make any further progress. Many ascetics from ordinary backgrounds who rely solely on a knight's breathing technique to become formal knights persist in their original training methods even after becoming formal knights, and have not been able to make any further progress in their cultivation for decades.
This situation has led many knights who were born ordinary and became formal knights through arduous training to increasingly choose to join various knightly orders, families, and companies in order to obtain guidance and support. In Connor's memory, there were several such people in the Ferguson family's family knightly order, who signed contracts with the Ferguson family to serve the Ferguson family in order to obtain guidance and resources, or simply married women from the Ferguson family and became members of the Ferguson family.
Hector, as was normal, entered into a twenty-year contract with the Salok Knights, to which he had joined. During the interrogation, Hector bitterly told Connor that he had thought the contract was bound by the laws of the Kaman Empire, but to his utter surprise, it turned out to be a soul contract. By signing it, his life and death were now at the mercy of others.
Hector did not join the Hector's Knights alone. Eleven other knights in similar situations joined at the same time, including the thin, demonized knight named Kovac who, knowing he could not survive, self-destructed to cover Hector's escape.
According to Hector's confession, after he, Kovac, and others joined the Salok Knights, they secretly went to a small island in the Storm Ocean and lived a secluded life. On the island, these formal knights received guidance from the high knights of the Salok Knights and began to take a secret medicine provided to them by the Salok Knights, which was said to aid in their cultivation.
Under the guidance of the high knight and consuming secret elixirs to aid their cultivation, the knights thought their good days were about to begin and that they hadn't made the wrong choice in choosing the Salok Knights. However, a nightmare descended upon them. The knights who had taken the elixirs began to exhibit various abnormalities: some inexplicably developed a craving for raw meat, some began binge eating, and some experienced uncontrollable hair growth…
Just as everyone was beginning to panic and start to doubt what kind of secret drug they had taken, the Salok Brotherhood offered them an explanation. The Salok Brotherhood told them that the drug was made from their specially crafted, precious and rare medicinal herbs, which could significantly enhance the knights' strength. They also said that the abnormalities they were experiencing were normal after taking the drug and there was nothing to worry about. The guy who died from taking the drug was because he had a pre-existing condition, and the drug itself had no safety issues.
After providing an explanation, the Salok Knights also taught them a very strange knightly breathing technique that supposedly promoted the absorption of the secret medicine. Because after taking the secret medicine, their strength did increase as the Salok Knights had said, the knights chose to believe the Salok Brotherhood's explanation at that time.
However, a month later, the first victim emerged among these knights who had chosen to believe in the Salok Knights. According to Hector's confession, the knight, who had developed gluttony due to the secret medicine, suddenly lost control, frantically biting his own hands and devouring his own flesh like a wild beast, causing massive bleeding and leading to his death…
The strange occurrence terrified the knights, so they once again sought an explanation from the Salok Knights. However, this time the Salok Knights tore off their veil of kindness and revealed their true colors. They directly used force to subdue all eleven knights, including Hector and Kovacs, and forced them to continue taking the secret medicine and practicing the bizarre knight breathing technique they had taught them.
The eleven strong knights did consider resisting, but the vast difference in strength made it impossible for them to break free from the control of the Salok Knights. Moreover, the Salok Knights threatened their families, telling the knights that if they resisted, not only would they die, but their families would also be implicated.
