Chapter 18 When the city gate catches fire, the innocent bystanders suffer.
"The meaning is simple. If you keep wasting your breath on me, then you will soon see Miss Rebecca's fair and delicate hand. I guarantee it with my noble status!" Connor said calmly, a slight smile on his lips, as if he wasn't talking about something as bloody as cutting off someone's hand, but rather about a happy thing that happened during a picnic!
"Huff..." Staring intently at Connor, Vidal's breathing suddenly became heavy, his eyes filled with murderous intent. However, after a minute of stalemate, the "tough guy" Mr. Vidal finally chose to cooperate. "You know a secret. We got some of your hair, so Rebecca and I decided to use a curse to silence you. The day you were on your date with Rebecca, I put a potion powder called Violet into that cheese-baked snail dish. This potion can erase some fragments of your memories under the guidance of my magic!"
Connor outwardly maintained a mysterious demeanor, looking at Vidal with a half-smile, but inwardly he was thinking:
"Use the chip to assess the credibility of what this person just said!"
"Beep! Mission established! Identifying, please wait!" A cold female voice sounded from the chip in my mind.
Assessing the credibility of what others say is one of the chip's main auxiliary functions. The main principle is to analyze the speaker's facial micro-expressions and eye contact data. Theoretically, the accuracy of the analysis results is over 87%. However, in reality, because everyone is different, the final result can only be used as a reference. Moreover, some people may not show any micro-expression changes due to reasons such as being too shrewd, so the auxiliary chip cannot even collect data and therefore cannot analyze it!
"Beep! The credibility of this person's words is 99%. The chip recommends that what this person just said can be trusted!"
"Activate verification mode. Notify me immediately if this person's statements are deemed unreliable!"
"Beep! Obeying the main command, identification mode activated!"
"I hope you can be more specific. For example, what secrets I know, or why they silenced me and erased some of my memories," Connor asked slowly with a smile. Although the chip's identification could only be used as a reference and wasn't necessarily very accurate, the 99% credibility still made Connor believe what Vidal had just said.
Vidal hesitated for a moment, but seemingly remembering the waterboarding he had just endured, he gritted his teeth and said in a low voice, "Rebecca and I are planning to murder Fabinho. The detective you hired to investigate Rebecca accidentally discovered some clues, so we need to kill you and that detective to ensure the information doesn't leak out. There's a psychic in the Rune City Police Department who can access the memories of the deceased within 24 hours of their death. And you're a nobleman. If we successfully curse you to death, your noble status might lead the police department to send that psychic to track down the killer."
"Damn it, this guy really got shot while lying down. He was just sitting at home when this trouble fell from the sky!" Connor was filled with mixed emotions when he heard Vidal reveal the reason for wanting to kill him. It was true that he had hired a detective to investigate Rebecca, but in the end, the only useful information Connor Ferguson got from the detective was that Rebecca was Fabinho's illegitimate daughter. He never expected that this would be the reason why Connor Ferguson would lose his life.
"If I remember correctly, Fabinho is Rebecca's father. Why did you and Rebecca plan to murder Fabinho?" Having figured out the reason for his own murder, Connor became very interested in this question. Valverde had told him that Vidal was also the illegitimate son of a wealthy businessman, and he and Rebecca had the same background. He was really curious about what would cause Rebecca to conspire with someone like Vidal to kill her own father!
"Heh heh heh..." Hearing Connor's question, Vidal sneered. He said in a low voice, "Connor Ferguson, you, the eldest son of the Earl, the future Earl, probably can't imagine the lives of us bastards. Although we have no worries about food and clothing, we are like slaves without any dignity. That damned Fabinho, that fat pig, besides giving Rebecca some money, actually lets his legitimate sons bully her. What's most unbearable is that he actually plans to make Rebecca a mistress of a sixty-year-old senator. This is something I absolutely cannot tolerate. I want him dead!"
He swallowed hard. Connor hadn't expected that such a story lay behind his murder. Now that he had finally figured out the whole story, if he had to sum it up in one word, "when the city gates catch fire, the fish in the moat suffer" would be a very accurate description.
"Alright, I've asked you everything I needed to know about your curse and murder of me. Now tell me what you know about wizards and magic!" Just as Vidal had guessed, Connor was indeed very interested in the dark green corrosive liquid that Vidal had used during the battle. Connor longed for freedom, for a life without any constraints, and in such a supernatural world, he needed great strength to guarantee his freedom!
Vidal was not surprised by Connor's question. He didn't say anything, but just looked at Connor calmly.
Connor shrugged. He knew exactly what Vidal wanted. "Mr. Vidal, in the very, very far East, there's an ancient saying: 'Man is the knife, and I am the fish on the chopping block.' I think this idiom is very fitting for you, me, and Miss Rebecca, who's tied to the bed next door. I am the knife, and you and Miss Rebecca are the fish on the chopping block. I can cut you however I want. You have no right to bargain with me!"
After Connor explained the idiom "I am the fish on the chopping block," Vidal was furious. He struggled to stand up, but before he could move, Connor kicked him to the ground.
"Thump!"
Vidal clutched his stomach, rolling around on the ground and howling in pain. Connor's kick had hit him squarely in the liver.
"Mr. Vidal, I'm not afraid to tell you, you must die, but Miss Rebecca doesn't necessarily have to. If you truly love Miss Rebecca, why not use your knowledge to give her a chance to live?" Connor said calmly.
