Wizard Earl
Chapter 1068 The Struggle for Power
Because Pope Ilsanker is facing such a problem, Margaret believes that Ilsanker's decision to return the Frost Staff to Elena and his implication to Elena that he supports her during their meeting is very likely a preparation for the future!
Ilsank now wants to help Hummels break through to become a Level 3 Wizard so that the Church of Storms can smoothly take over, but he also doesn't want to give up his power in the Church of Storms and accept the impact of Hummels' breakthrough to become a Level 3 Wizard on his power. So Ilsank needs a helper to do some things that Ilsank can't do openly, and help Ilsank counterbalance Hummels!
The current power structure of the Church of Storms consists of one pope and three cardinals. The pope is Ilsank himself, and the other three cardinals are Hummels, Sabitzer, and Elena.
Among them, Cardinal Sabitzer, whose lifespan is nearing its end, has been holding onto his last hope of breaking through to become a Level 3 wizard in seclusion for the past few years. However, he is quite old, and the possibility of successfully breaking through is too small. If no miracle occurs, he will pass away in another two or three years. Therefore, Cardinal Sabitzer has basically withdrawn from the power struggle of the Church of Storms.
With Sabitzer's death, only two cardinals, Hummels and Elena, remained in the Church of Storms. Therefore, if Hummels were to become a level three wizard in the future, it would pose a challenge to Ilsank's power. In that case, Elena would be a natural pawn in Ilsank's hands to counterbalance Hummels!
Previously, Elena was able to break the Storm Church's convention that only second-level wizards could become cardinals, becoming a cardinal with the cultivation of a first-level wizard. This was not only because Elena was considered by the entire Storm Church to be exceptionally talented, making her breakthrough to become a second-level wizard a certainty.
To a large extent, it was because Pope Ilsanker, out of respect for Elena's deceased teacher Camelle, used his authority as pope to forcefully pass the decision at a high-level meeting of the Storm Church, overcoming opposition. Therefore, although Elena eventually became a cardinal with Pope Ilsanker's help, her position was unstable, and her prestige within the church was far inferior to that of the other two cardinals, Sabitzer and Hummels. She was essentially a cardinal in name only, holding the title of cardinal within the Safe House Storm Church, but without the actual power commensurate with her status!
Although Elena has now broken through to become a second-level wizard and retrieved the Frostfire Staff from Pope Ilsank, which perfectly matches her cultivation and meditation, resulting in a significant increase in her strength, even now, neither her personal strength nor her authority within the church can compare to the rising star, Hummels.
However, having become a second-level wizard and gained the value of the Frostfire Staff, Elena's ambition naturally grew along with her power. She began to want to compete with Hummels for the position of the next pope. Thus, Elena, driven by greed, even though she knew that Ilsank's support was merely a means to use her and to counterbalance Hummels, willingly submitted to Ilsank's control and manipulation.
Realizing this, Margaret, Elena's confidante, couldn't help but show a hint of worry in her eyes. Hummels was known for his strong personality and vengeful nature. Now, Elena, driven by greed, was helping Ilsank to counterbalance him. Hummels might not be able to do much, but Ilsank was getting old, and the day he passed away would likely be the day Hummels retaliated...
Even though Margaret was aware of this possibility, it seemed that Elena had already made her decision. As her subordinate, she couldn't say anything more. She could only secretly pray to the Storm Goddess, hoping that Hummels wouldn't successfully break through to become a level three wizard. If that wasn't possible, she hoped that Hummels wouldn't break through too early, at least giving Elena some time to grow her strength.
Furthermore, during this meeting, although Elena kept asking to meet with Connor, she always evaded the question and never mentioned her purpose in wanting to see Connor. However, even though Elena didn't say it, Margaret could guess her purpose with a high degree of certainty.
It's clear that after breaking through to become a second-level wizard, retrieving the Froststorm Staff, a third-tier enchanted item left to her by her mentor Camel, and gaining the secret support of Pope Ilsank, her sister Elena, who was originally indifferent to worldly affairs in the Church of Storms, began to truly covet the position of Pope and wanted to fight Hummels for it.
In this situation, Elena took the risk and requested a meeting with Connor. Her reasons were either that she wanted to use Connor to sabotage Hummels, or that she wanted to obtain information from Connor about Reyes to gain an advantage in the operation against Reyes, thereby helping her establish prestige and expand her influence within the Church of Storms…
So after realizing Elena's purpose and feeling that meeting Elena wouldn't pose much risk to Connor, Margaret finally agreed to Elena's request. However, she also made her own request to Elena: she wanted to go to the Navas Forest to personally arrange the matter.
Milik was under Cardinal Hummels' command, and his death in the line of duty was no small matter. As the person in charge, Christant would definitely investigate thoroughly. Although she didn't know what happened in the Navas Forest or how Milik died, for some reason, Margaret felt that Milik's death was related to Connor.
If Connor really did it, then Connor will be in danger if Christant finds out. Even if Connor is innocent and has nothing to do with it, as long as Christant can't find anything, he will most likely try to shift the blame and make Milick and Connor Ferguson, two dark wizards who are already hostile to the Church of Storms, take the fall. So from any perspective, Connor is in considerable danger in the Navas Forest.
Now that Varga is in Ferguson Mansion and is being watched closely by the Church of Storms, she cannot be touched unless absolutely necessary. Therefore, the only one left who can go to Navas Forest to support Connor is Margaret. So, for Connor's safety, even if it may involve considerable risks, Margaret has decided to go to Navas Forest to support Connor.
