The Eye of Arbitration! It's Connor's solution to the current lack of trust between him and Margaret!
The Eye of Arbitration is a powerful entity discovered by powerful Byzantine wizards from other dimensions during the Byzantine period. It is not life, but more like the law of the world. Wizards would use the Eye of Arbitration to witness when signing important oaths.
As the law of the world, the Eye of Arbitration has a very strong and mysterious binding force. If you use it as a witness to make a vow, you will inevitably suffer the backlash of the Eye of Arbitration if you break it. There is no room for luck.
Margaret's vigilance and her eerie blood magic forced Connor to temporarily abandon his plan to rashly eliminate her.
Using the Eye of Arbitration to ensure that he and Margaret would not betray each other was Connor's last act of stubbornness and also a helpless compromise. After all, if the two could not reach an agreement, there would only be one outcome—a bloodbath! Only one of the two people in this room could survive, since neither he nor Margaret could accept entrusting their fate and safety to each other without any insurance!
Although he had the advantage of location and several alchemical mechanisms in the apartment, Connor was not sure if he would be the final winner. Even if he were to miraculously survive, Connor did not know what terrible price he would have to pay.
Rather than leaving everything uncertain and unknown, it would be better to have a strong insurance policy to ensure that neither he nor Margaret would betray the other.
"The Eye of Arbitration?" Upon hearing Connor's suggestion, Miss Margaret fell into deep thought. After a long while, she parted her cherry lips and uttered a single word: "Yes!"
Seeing that Margaret had agreed to the Eye of Arbitration as a way to resolve the trust issue, Connor smiled slightly, and the spell he had prepared in his mind slowly stopped. If Margaret's answer was no, then without a doubt, Connor would have already taken decisive action and spared no effort to keep Margaret here.
With a shared understanding of not wanting to reveal their identities and having decided on the Eye of Arbitration as a solution, Connor and Margaret quickly finalized the contents of their oath.
Connor and Margaret exchanged a deep look, stood facing each other, and simultaneously began to whisper an ancient incantation.
The incantation was chanted for a full minute, and a strange energy fluctuation suddenly appeared in the apartment. Then, a huge crack appeared in the apartment space, and a strange vertical eye that materialized squeezed out of the crack and appeared in front of Connor and Margaret.
While continuing to chant the incantation with Margaret, Connor squinted at the enormous vertical eye before him. The eye was entirely white with golden pupils. Although it did not carry any powerful pressure, it exerted immense pressure on Connor, causing him to feel extremely suppressed.
"Under the witness of the Eye of Arbitration, I, Connor Ferguson, swear that I will never betray Margaret Rodriguez, provided that she does not betray me. If I break this oath, I am willing to accept the arbitration of the Eye of Arbitration!"
"Under the witness of the Eye of Arbitration, I, Margaret Rodriguez, swear that I will never betray Connor Ferguson, provided he does not betray me. If I break this oath, I am willing to accept the arbitration of the Eye of Arbitration!"
After Connor and Margaret recited their vows in unison, the Eye of Arbitration flashed several times before exploding instantly, scattering starlight that drifted over Connor and Margaret.
As starlight bathed him, Connor could clearly feel the invisible bond of the oath binding him. He shook his head, the last shred of hope vanishing...
After the oath was signed, Margaret glanced at Connor, looking unwilling to say anything more, and very decisively walked straight to the door.
"Miss Margaret, please wait!" Connor said with a smile, standing still.
Upon hearing Connor's voice, Margaret stopped and turned around to look at him warily.
When they were agreeing on the terms of their oath, they both tacitly agreed not to include a clause prohibiting them from harming each other. Not betraying each other doesn't mean they can't kill each other.
"Miss Margaret, please don't misunderstand, I didn't mean anything by it. If you want to leave now, I absolutely won't stop you. With the oath of the Eye of Arbitration, I have absolute trust in you, Miss Margaret!" Meeting Margaret's wary gaze, Connor smiled and waved his hand, explaining, "But Miss Margaret, aren't you curious how I discovered you?"
Hearing Connor's explanation, Margaret's wariness eased somewhat. She hesitated for a moment, then walked back to the sofa and coldly asked Connor, "What do you want to say?"
"It's very simple. I think that with the oath of the Eye of Arbitration as a foundation of trust, we can answer some questions that we are both interested in!" Although Margaret's tone was cold, Connor still spoke with a smile, his tone gentle and unhurried.
"Very well, then let me ask you a question first: how did you discover my identity?" Miss Margaret showed no politeness towards Connor and took the initiative to ask the question that interested her.
"Your voice! Since we parted at Evar Manor, I've been completely infatuated with you, Miss Margaret. I can't eat or sleep, my mind is filled with your image and voice. Just now, Miss Margaret, you spoke with your true voice again, so of course I recognized you immediately!" Suppressing the goosebumps all over his body, Connor said, feigning deep affection:
"Hmph, Connor, you're utterly hypocritical. You're so infatuated with me, you can't even eat or drink? If I had shown you the slightest weakness just now, that demonic artifact of yours would have plunged into my heart without hesitation, wouldn't it?" Miss Margaret scoffed disdainfully, mockingly retorting.
Even though Margaret saw through his true thoughts, Connor, with his thick skin, didn't feel embarrassed and still looked at Margaret with a smile.
"You're probably wondering why I know your true identity, aren't you? Telling you won't hurt. When you killed Vidal, that disciple of the Church of Spirits, the Church suspected you. It's just that with the storm brewing, the Church doesn't have the energy to deal with a little ant like you right now!" Margaret said mockingly, a hint of smugness in her voice.
Although he was alarmed by what Margaret had said, Connor outwardly remained calm and composed, nodding and smiling, "The Church has discovered me? Looks like I'm very lucky to have a companion like Miss Margaret at this time! Haha!"
