Chapter 118 Corruption of the Spirit Abyss
Chapter 118 Corruption of the Spirit Abyss (6K long chapter, please vote and subscribe)
Richard rowed the lifeboat closer and closer to Hart Island.
In Richard's view, the entire island was lifeless, like a land of the dead, yet it gave him a familiar feeling of returning home.
The island's landscape gradually unfolded in the darkness, a pitch-black expanse where only a few haphazard bushes could be discerned where Winnie's lamp swept across.
Strange bird calls echoed from the forest, sounding particularly eerie in the night.
As the light swept across the area, several perched birds were startled into flight, their wings flapping loudly in the darkness.
Richard could clearly see that Winnie had goosebumps on her bare forearms, but the flames of curiosity and excitement burning brightly above her head.
This is a born adventurer.
"Let's go over there!" Winnie shouted excitedly, pointing ahead. "The beach is over there!"
Richard rowed his famous boat, and the two docked at the edge of the beach.
Winnie jumped aboard before the boat had even come to a complete stop.
Richard stowed the oars inside the boat and used a rock as an anchor to secure the lifeboat to the beach.
Winnie ignored the lifeboat and continued exploring inside on her own.
Richard ignored the woman and quietly pulled a palm-sized metal box from his pocket.
This was prepared in advance; it contained seven or eight dried, dead flies.
He sculpted two, and fresh flesh and blood silently flowed into them.
Two flies trembled slightly with their thin wings, fluttered for a moment, and then stood up, turning into flesh and blood puppets.
"Go to high altitude. Notify me immediately if anyone approaches the island," Richard whispered to the first fly.
He was worried that an outsider might barge in while he was doing his business.
He then turned to the second one: "You fly ahead of me to scout. If you find a problem, hover and circle overhead to track the enemy. If you find danger, return quickly."
Two flies took flight silently, one soaring high into the sky, the other skimming the ground into the darkness.
There was also a small, sealed plastic bag inside the metal box.
It contained three seeds of the Netherworld Soul-Devouring Vine.
He habitually carries three pills with him in case of emergency.
If the island has suitable conditions, perhaps we could find a place to plant it, but we should be cautious.
He followed Winnie onto the beach.
We walked across the beach and stepped onto the land.
Richard's vision has been greatly enhanced; although it doesn't reach the level of night vision, he can still vaguely see many things.
The situation on Hart Island was the same as what he had seen from the air with his parrot last time.
The island is mostly flat, with a small grove of trees in the center and wasteland elsewhere. There are a few scattered low, gray-white buildings in the southeast corner, with a few excavators and bulldozers parked nearby.
There are no lights on the entire island, so there shouldn't be anyone stationed there.
On the wasteland, square burial areas were marked with white lime lines, and simple numbers were written on them, such as A2, D15, etc., which were roughly arranged in a vertical and horizontal sequence.
This was different from what the parrot had seen from the sky last time; from high above, Richard had mistaken it for a white fence.
Winnie was walking towards the complex.
Richard followed.
There are a total of 5 low, gray-white houses.
In the darkness, the window was completely black, without a single light.
Two of the buildings were abandoned, and the sea breeze whistled through the broken window frames.
Winnie walked in excitedly, holding her camera and taking pictures everywhere; the flash was very bright in the dark.
Richard tried pressing the power switch, but there was no response; the island had no electricity at all.
The flashlight beam swept across the ground, revealing rat droppings, scattered waterproof tarpaulins, stacked shovels and lime bags, and several sets of stained protective suits piled in the corner.
There is also the logo of KOM company above, which should be a temporary camp for the burial workers.
The other three rooms were locked, and you couldn't see inside.
Richard didn't bother going in; he just needed to make sure no one was there.
Two excavators and a bulldozer were parked on the open ground in front of the gate, with dark soil remaining on their buckets.
The two walked around the house a few times, but there was nothing special about it.
"Go look over there!" Winnie commanded.
Richard frowned slightly but said nothing.
However, Richard also wanted to explore, so he went to the burial area to take a look.
A faint stench of decay permeated the air; too many corpses were buried here, and even the soil itself began to emanate the smell of decay.
After walking a few steps, Winnie heard a crisp cracking sound under her feet.
She looked down and saw that it was a section of human leg bone, which had been washed out of the soil by rainwater many years ago. The bone surface was covered with fine cracks, and dried ligament tissue was still attached to the joint.
"This is so exciting!" Winnie exclaimed excitedly, crouching down to take pictures. The flash illuminated the white bones, making them appear starkly white. "If I post this, I'll gain at least a few thousand more followers!!"
"You're really doing poorly. The goddaughter of a famous director is actually happy with such a small number of fans." Richard scoffed.
He suddenly sensed that the flies in the sky were strangely shifting, and finally plunged into the sea, being swept away by the ocean current.
It's probably because flies are too weak to fly steadily at high altitudes.
He needed a bigger bird. He looked around, and in his conscious state, no animal could hide.
A row of birds perched on the treetop.
On a branch overhead, a great eagle owl (a type of owl) perched motionless, seemingly certain that the two-legged creatures below could not see it.
Without saying a word, Richard immediately used his magical hand to silently grab its neck and twist it suddenly!
Click!
The great eagle owl died instantly, falling from the tree and crashing to the ground with a thud.
"What?!" Winnie was startled and frantically shone her flashlight toward the source of the sound.
Richard said casually, "It's nothing, I just kicked a stone."
"Be careful!" Winnie said impatiently, preoccupied with her own exploration and completely ignoring what Richard was doing behind her.
Richard crouched down to observe.
The Great Eagle Owl is larger than a regular owl, and its feathers are iron-gray.
He reached out and pressed it, and fresh flesh and blood surged in, consuming a full 5 units of fresh flesh and blood before finally transforming it into a flesh and blood puppet.
The great eagle owl quickly flapped its wings and stood up unsteadily.
"Go out and scout the sky. If you spot someone approaching, follow them and alert me with your flight posture. If there are any special circumstances, return to me and let me know the information."
The great eagle owl silently flapped its wings and flew into the sky.
Winnie walked into the depths of the woods, holding a flashlight.
Richard was too lazy to walk with her, so he followed the place where the deathly aura was densest, and walked for a few minutes in the darkness until he arrived at the center of the landfill.
The bodies were buried underground, and no trace of them could be seen on the surface.
KOM's landfill technology is decent: lime covering, soil compaction, and in some places even grass seeds sown on top, but unfortunately they don't grow very well.
But Richard could clearly sense what lay beneath the soil: layers upon layers of densely packed bones, and endless death energy seeping from the cracks in the earth.
If the Netherworld Soul-Devouring Vine could be planted here, its growth would be unimaginably excellent.
The appearance of the Netherworld Soul-Eating Vine is obviously not normal. Who has ever seen a plant that can run around and scream?
Unfortunately, there are no caves here for cover, so planting them on the ground makes them very easy to spot.
It would be best to establish a base here and dig an underground pit.
Otherwise, if discovered, it could trigger countless investigations.
Finally, the system notification sounded: "Ding! A skeleton nest can be built here, meeting the minimum requirements of the Bone Land. Based on the environment of this Bone Land, a [Skeleton Nest - Corrupted Spirit Abyss Type] can be built. The materials required for construction are: 1000 grams of silver, 1000 obsidian stones, and 1 diamond (the larger the better).
"7
Richard's spirits lifted!
Silver is worthless, obsidian can be bought online, and diamonds are just that—diamonds. A few years ago, these things were very expensive, the bigger the diamond, the more expensive it was.
But now that it can be synthesized artificially, it's worthless.
As long as you pay, Tokyo University has plenty of factories that can synthesize diamonds of all sizes.
Try asking online; you should be able to get in touch with them.
As long as light transmission is not required, diamonds can be made in extremely large sizes.
Richard, still unsure of the effects of the [Skeleton Nest - Corrupted Spirit Abyss Type], caressed the [Withered Resentment] ring.
Devour the souls of the dead!
A massive amount of death energy converged on Richard, surging into the ring like a tidal wave.
The ring continued to heat up.
Winnie continued walking ahead on her own, taking pictures and exploring as she went, completely oblivious to what her companions were doing.
Richard stood there, overwhelmed by the overwhelming deathly aura; he wondered how long it would take to completely engulf it.
Perhaps the ring can be upgraded?
Just then, the Great Eagle Owl flew back silently, brushed past Richard's hand, and took off again.
Through this brief encounter, Richard obtained the memory images it had just scouted.
There is a simple pier in the northwest corner of the island, next to which is a rusty shipping container.
This dock is not shown on any civilian maps and has been deliberately covered with tree branches that are not completely dry, indicating that it has been used recently.
Richard frowned.
Besides people from KOM and OCME, who else would come to this island?
And why hide the dock?
Richard had a vague feeling that Hart Island might be hiding some unknown secrets.
Hart Island was too large. After Richard devoured all the death energy in the vicinity, the surrounding death energy slowly flowed over, and the devouring speed greatly decreased.
Richard simply moved to another location to continue devouring.
In the woods, Winnie's phone flash kept flashing as she took pictures.
Samuel Stone walked into the control room and ordered, "The radar company people are here to inspect the radar. As before, it will be shut down for maintenance from midnight to 3 a.m. tonight."
"Yes, Inspector Stone!" The radar technician happily carried out Samuel Stone's order to shut down the system.
This is a relatively safe time; no one would go to Hart Island in the middle of the night.
After the machine was shut down, he was fine and could get some sleep, so why not?
Samuel Stone returned to his office and immediately sent a message: "Shut down. Arrange for repairs as soon as possible."
The man in the suit received the message quickly and then sent a message to Dali: "Start the operation. You have three hours."
OK.
On the New York coastline, in a secluded illegal dock.
Snapped!
Dali closed his phone: "Guys! Let's get to work!"
Three speedboats immediately sped out from a hidden little harbor.
Each speedboat carried four people, all masked and armed with AR-15 automatic rifles, as the engines chug along towards Hart Island.
Winnie found a crooked pine tree, its trunk twisted into a unique arc.
She felt this place was very iconic, and taking a picture of it would prove that she had been to Hart Island.
She started backing away, looking for a better angle to shoot.
She retreated step by step, step by step...
Suddenly, the ground beneath my feet gave way!
The entire ground collapsed.
"Ah!" Winnie screamed and fell to the ground with a thud.
When Winnie fell face down, she looked up and saw a skull right in front of her, its empty eye sockets facing her eyes.
"Ah! Help! There are zombies!" Her scream startled the crows in the distance, their flapping wings echoing through the forest.
"Richard! Richard, come save me!"
This young lady is such a nuisance! Richard had no choice but to stop absorbing the death energy and frown as he searched, only to see beams of light flickering from beneath the ground in the distance.
He went over and saw that it was a 3-meter-deep pit, with Winnie standing in it.
It is likely due to soil erosion, or the bulldozers' perfunctory work during the burial, resulting in the soil not being compacted, which created a pit about three meters deep and two meters square.
Half a leg bone protruded from the pit wall, with several ribs and a cracked pelvic bone scattered nearby, the bone surfaces covered with pits and craters from lime corrosion.
Around Winnie, layers upon layers of bones were piled up in the soil.
Richard walked to the edge of the pit.
Winnie cowered in terror, her voice trembling as she cried out, "Help me! Get me out of this damn place!"
Richard didn't rush; he first checked the stability of the pit walls to prevent collapse.
It's pretty sturdy, thankfully.
Three meters isn't high; Richard could easily jump down, but Winnie clearly couldn't.
"What are you looking at! Help me! Don't come down, or neither of us will be able to get up. Go find a stick!" Winnie commanded.
Richard frowned at her: "If you can't speak properly, I don't mind leaving you here tonight."
"How dare you!" Winnie roared. "My godfather is West! I order you to get me out of here right now!"
"None of my business." Richard clapped his hands, turned and left, throwing a desire manipulation spell at her, pushing her fear to the limit.
Winnie screamed, "Don't go! I'm sorry! Come back!"
Richard ignored her and found an open space to continue absorbing death energy.
The dark entrance to the cave was deserted.
There were skeletons all around.
No matter how she called out, no one paid any attention.
I tried to make a phone call, but there was no signal inside the cave.
Winnie felt overwhelmed by fear.
She tried desperately to jump upwards, but all around her were layers upon layers of skeletons, and she didn't even have the courage to use them for leverage.
The nauseating stench of a corpse assaulted my senses.
She completely broke down and cried.
"Help me! Help me!"
"Help!"
"I'm going to kill you!"
"Damn bastard!"
"Ah! Help!"
"Waaaaah~ I won't do it again, please help me! Please!"
Unfortunately, she could barely make a sound in the deep pit.
Richard waited for more than ten minutes before leisurely returning to the cave entrance.
Seeing Richard's face reappear at the cave entrance, Winnie, who was crying with snot and tears streaming down her face, was overjoyed and quickly pleaded, "Save me! I was wrong! Please! Save me!"
Richard snorted coldly.
If no one else knew that he had come out with Winnie, he wouldn't have bothered to save this arrogant young lady.
Richard jumped down easily.
At a depth of three meters, he didn't even need to bend his knees to reach the bottom of the pit.
"You! You! How did you get down here!" Winnie was dumbfounded. "We're both down here now, how are we going to get back up?"
Richard grabbed her collar with one hand and supported her hips with the other, gently lifting her up before loosening the collar.
Winnie felt an immense force coming from below, and she was easily lifted to the edge of the pit. She quickly grabbed the edge of the pit wall and climbed up.
"You're so strong!" Winnie felt reborn as she left the pit; most of her fear vanished instantly. She lay on the edge of the pit, supporting herself with her hands on either side, and stretched her legs down: "Grab my legs and get up!"
Richard was quite surprised that this woman hadn't kicked him while he was down. She wasn't completely heartless; she was just too spoiled and pampered. To put it bluntly, she needed to be taught a lesson.
He jumped lightly and grabbed Winnie's leg.
Winnie couldn't pull him at all, but Richard didn't really need her strength either, and with a little help, he easily climbed up.
"They're up here already?" Winnie's eyes gleamed with a strange light.
Richard clapped his hands, brushing the dust off his clothes, and then noticed that Winnie's hands had been cut and bleeding when she fell, but she seemed oblivious to it.
This woman is tough enough; no wonder she looks down on the weak Connor.
Just then, he suddenly sensed a great eagle owl circling rapidly in the distance.
Someone is approaching the island!
It must be the water police.
Richard wasn't in a hurry. He figured if the water police came, so be it; after all, it was just an accidental malfunction of his ship.
"Alright, that's enough, let's go back."
"Oh." Winnie, having been disciplined, became much more obedient and started walking back.
But she twisted her ankle, and now she walks with a limp, gasping for breath with every step.
Richard wouldn't carry her, and she was very stubborn, gritting her teeth and walking ahead silently, but at a very slow pace.
A moment later, the great eagle owl returned to Richard's side, slowed down, and silently flew past.
Richard reached out and touched its feathers, then obtained the image through contact again: the three speedboats were full of masked thugs, armed with assault rifles!
Less than 20 minutes from the coast!
"Why isn't it the marine police?!" Richard exclaimed in surprise.
Where did this group of people come from?
He immediately thought of that hidden little dock. Could this be a smuggling base?
Without saying a word, he picked up his phone and called Lyon.
There's no signal on the island.
"What terrible infrastructure!" Richard suddenly stepped forward, hoisted Winnie onto his back, and strode quickly toward the beach.
Winnie's ankle hurt, and her stomach was also uncomfortable from the pressure of her shoulder, but a smile appeared on her lips as she said in a sweet voice, "What's wrong? Feeling sorry for me? Little man."
Richard glanced at her and gave her a hard slap on the bottom: "Behave yourself and don't move around."
"Ah!" Winnie gasped softly, but wasn't angry at all. She grinned and said, "No one has ever dared to treat me like that before. You're the first!"
Richard ignored her.
Winnie continued, "Want to be a big star? I think you're good-looking. I'll ask my godfather to find you a role in Hollywood."
Richard remained silent; the world isn't just about movies.
Winnie chuckled.
She leaned close to Richard's ear and asked, "How about we have sex?"
Richard: ? ? ?
Richard looked at her in surprise: "Isn't your boyfriend Connor?"
"Don't mention that wimp, I've already broken up with him. Even if we hadn't broken up, I would still do this all the time. That's how it is in Hollywood."
"Awesome!" Richard thought to himself.
He had absolutely no interest in buses; playing around like this, who knows what kind of virus it might be?
"Not interested."
"Are you afraid of getting sick?" Winnie saw through his thoughts.
Richard snorted and walked forward with steady steps.
Winnie said brazenly, "Don't worry, I'm clean. In our circle, men and women of a certain status always have to see each other's medical reports before sleeping together."
"Awesome!" Richard exclaimed again. "But Connor looks..."
""
"Like an idiot, huh? He is an idiot, he can help me fend off some even sillier suitors."
Lee noticed that Connor's head was as vast as a grassland.
Connor, you're really in a bad situation!
"Is this okay? Let's do it right here, this is so exciting!" Winnie's eyes lit up.
She had never been carried on someone's shoulder like a sack before, and the feeling was quite exciting.
Richard realized that he had encountered the legendary stamp collector.
There are many people like that in Hollywood.
Many handsome men and beautiful women, despite their on-screen image, are very open-minded in private and enjoy collecting men and women from the entire entertainment industry.
Some even have no gender restrictions.
Richard still shook his head: "Your body odor is too strong, I can't stand it."
"Fk!" Winnie cursed angrily, then laughed at herself.
"Why don't we bring Debbie along? I also want to try the Saintess's flavor."
"You're such a bitch!" Richard was speechless.
Winnie wasn't angry; instead, she giggled, "The meaning of life lies in experience, and happiness is the most important thing! Come on!"
Richard had no interest in flirting with this slut.
The gang of thugs was approaching, and he didn't want to get involved.
Hurry up and leave.
A few minutes later, Richard carried Winnie onto the boat.
Everyone asked in surprise, "What's wrong?"
"I'm injured, I sprained my ankle."
Lyon breathed a sigh of relief.
This voyage was extremely unsuccessful, resulting in injuries to two people.
Connor asked with concern, "What happened? Winnie, did you sprain your ankle?"
"Are you blind? Can't you see?" Winnie retorted. "Get lost, stay away from me!"
Connor Shane stood aside.
"Can't the ship leave yet?" Richard asked.
Lyon scoffed, "We definitely can't leave. But since you're back from your expedition, we can call for help."
Call for help? Richard frowned.
Who knows if the water police are in cahoots with those guys? Didn't they say they have water radar?
How can they act with such impunity?
They might be accomplices.
However, Lyon had already taken out his maritime walkie-talkie: "Mayday—Mayday—Mayday, this is the yacht 'Wave Chaser,' steering gear malfunction, no injuries, requires tugboat assistance, currently located at the northwest corner of Hart Island, coordinates..."
'
As he called for help, he casually turned the rudder.
The rudder actually moved!
Lyon paused for a moment, then turned left and right, but everything seemed normal.
"Huh? The problem is solved again?"
Richard silently withdrew his magical hand: "Perhaps it was some kind of electronic malfunction, and it recovered on its own."
Lyon scratched his head, also a little confused: "Never mind, since everything's alright, let's go back. We'll take it to the shipyard for another check. It's strange that the water police didn't come looking for us today."
Samuel Stone was sitting in the duty room waiting.
He never dared to leave until the transaction was completed.
Just then, a subordinate approached: "Inspector Stone, a fishing boat just called for help. They're stuck on Hart Island because of a steering gear malfunction. Our radar is off, so we haven't been able to spot them. Should we...?"
'
"What the fuck!" Samuel spat out a mouthful of water. "Hart Island?"
"right."
He nearly jumped up. "Send someone to rescue us immediately!"
The subordinates went out to arrange for rescue tugboats.
Samuel quickly picked up his phone and sent a message to the man in the suit: "Radar restored, maintenance suspended."
The man in the suit trembled slightly upon receiving the message.
What happened?!
Who found us!
It would be troublesome if Dali were caught.
Damn it! Who made this move?! The man in the suit didn't have time to think; he immediately called Dali: "Operation canceled immediately, something's happened!"
