Chapter 4 A 24-Year Obsession
As soon as it was light, Chen Mo sat up in shock on the cold wooden bed.
He didn't even have time to adjust to the spirits wandering around the room. He rushed downstairs and opened the Book of Obsessions on the octagonal table that would determine his life or death!
The booklet turned to a new page on its own, even though there was no wind.
Lines of ink slowly emerged:
[Obsession Number 15 of Renxu Year: The Love Suicide]
[Client: Lin Xiulan (female, passed away in 1998)]
[Obsession: To find my lost wedding ring.]
[Time Limit: Ten Days]
[Clue: The ring is made of silver, with an engraving of orchids and the symbol of eternal love on the inside. Last known location: The former site of the department store in the old town (now Wanda Plaza).]
Difficulty: Medium
[Reward: Unlocks the ability to touch memories.]
[Note: This obsession has lasted for twenty-four years, and the resentment is quite deep-seated. Please handle it with care.]
Died in 1998?
A ring that's been missing for twenty-four years?!
Chen Mo felt a chill run down his spine. That place had long been demolished and rebuilt into the current Wanda Plaza; how could he possibly find it!
But the cold time limit on the record of obsessions—ten days—made him feel despair.
The consequence of failing to complete it is the deduction of one year of one's lifespan!
He didn't want to experience the feeling of having his life brutally taken away again!
"Where should I look...?"
Chen Mo was scratching his hair in frustration when he caught a glimpse of a shadow out of the corner of his eye.
A woman's silhouette, dressed in an old-fashioned cheongsam, appeared beside him at some point, looking at him with sorrow, or rather, at the Book of Obsession in his hand.
Lin Xiulan!
Chen Mo's heart skipped a beat!
The woman's silhouette had no facial features; her outline was almost transparent in the morning light. She slowly raised her hand and pointed towards the kitchen.
"What do you mean?" Chen Mo asked instinctively.
The shadow did not answer, but its form began to fade, and it was about to disappear.
Chen Mo immediately understood and rushed into the kitchen!
The kitchen contained only an old stove, a water tank, and a cupboard. His gaze swept quickly across the room, finally settling on a tightly closed drawer at the bottom of the cupboard.
He pulled it away!
Inside the drawer, a tin box with peeling red paint lay quietly in the deepest part.
Chen Mo took out the box and opened the lid.
Inside was a stack of old photos and a letter at the very bottom.
He pulled out the yellowed letter; the paper was brittle and felt like it would break at the slightest touch.
Brother Banshan:
Seeing this letter is like seeing you in person. My time is running out... I have no regrets in this life, except for that ring... but I've lost it.
It was in the department store... I went back to look for it three times, but I couldn't find it... I just wanted to see it one last time before I left...
At the end of the letter was another line of writing, the ink lighter:
She passed away on July 15th. The ring was never found. — Chen Banshan's account
July 15th is the Ghost Festival.
Chen Mo stared intently at the words, his chest tightening. A woman's most humble wish before her death had become an obsession that lasted for twenty-four years.
He put the letter and photos back into the tin box and was about to get up when a sound mixed with the rubbing of dirt exploded in his mind.
"You want to help her?"
Chen Mo turned around abruptly, only to find Di Ling already standing under the old locust tree in the courtyard.
"This task is too difficult!" Chen Mo said in a deep voice. "Twenty-four years have passed; the area has been completely rebuilt. How are we supposed to find it?"
"That's why it's called an obsession." The earth spirit's voice was completely calm. "Even Chen Banshan couldn't find it back then. But he didn't have spiritual vision."
The earth spirit pointed its mud finger at Chen Mo's eyes: "You can see the traces of obsession. On that ring, her strongest longing remains. As long as you get close, you can see the light it emits."
Chen Mo understood instantly. Psychic vision wasn't just a curse, it was a tool!
"Wanda Plaza is too crowded during the day, how am I supposed to find it?"
"At night," the spirit uttered two words, "after the mall closes. Obsession will anchor itself to the object; it will still be in the same place, in some dark corner, waiting to be seen."
"The reward is access to memory abilities, what is that?"
"When you touch the belongings, you can see the three most important memories of the deceased," the spirit explained. "It will help in finding the ring—you can touch other items left by Xiulan to see her memories of the day she lost the ring, but you only have one chance to touch the memories before you complete this obsession. You will only fully understand after you finish." Chen Mo nodded. That was indeed practical.
The spirit looked at him, its voice carrying a hint of warning: "Remember, you're not an ordinary person anymore. The mark of the old house on your neck will make everything in this city recognize you. Some will avoid you, some... will come looking for you. You'd better watch yourself."
After saying this, the clay figure turned and walked back into the house, disappearing into the darkness.
Chen Mo stood in the courtyard, the morning breeze blowing, but he felt no chill. His mind was filled with Lin Xiulan's final, desperate gaze.
He must find that ring!
Chen Mo did not go to the mall that day.
He spent a day searching online for all the architectural drawings and information about the old department store.
Wanda Plaza closes promptly at 10 p.m.
At 11 o'clock, Chen Mo appeared outside the fire escape in the back alley of the mall, carrying a tool bag.
He looked up at the massive, pitch-black building, beneath which lay the foundation of the old department store, and also the 24-year obsession of a woman.
According to the information, the ring most likely fell into a crack in the building during the renovation and eventually ended up in its current location.
A two-level underground parking garage, or an abandoned storage area!
Chen Mo took out a wire and aimed it at the lock on the fire escape door.
Tonight, he's going to sneak into Wanda Plaza!
