Shen Xiaoting sat back on the swing and started swinging by herself.

Chen Hao stood by and watched for a while, making sure his daughter could control the strength and range of the swings, and wouldn't swing too high or fall down, before he walked to the tool shed with peace of mind.

With nothing to do, an idea suddenly popped into his head—

Now that Tingting has a swing, what else can she do?

He saw the remaining wood on the ground—

A few red oak planks, a square piece of pine wood, some scraps—something suddenly came to mind.

Trojan horse.

It's not a stationary rocking horse, but a rocking horse that can rock back and forth and also slide forward.

When he was a child, he saw a carpenter making this kind of thing at the town market. The base of the wooden horse was curved, and when you rode it, your body would sway back and forth, and the wooden horse would swing back and forth like a real horse.

If you add four small wheels, you can glide by pushing off with your feet.

He started searching through the materials.

Red oak planks were used for the horse's body, pine squares for its legs, and scraps for its head.

Tools—saw, plane, chisel, hammer, sandpaper, wood glue, wood wax oil, four small wheels, and a small piece of leather for the saddle.

Shen Xiaoting was swinging on the swing when she saw her father moving wood and tools again. Curious, she slid off the swing and ran over to squat beside him.

"Dad, what are you doing?"

Chen Hao picked up a piece of red oak wood, measured its dimensions with a measuring tape, and drew lines on it.

Without even looking up, he said, "Make a rocking horse."

"A rocking horse?" Shen Xiaoting tilted her head and thought for a moment. "Is it a horse made of wood?"

"Yes, a horse made of wood."

"Can a horse made of wood walk?" Shen Xiaoting's little face was full of disbelief.

Chen Hao put down the ruler, looked at his daughter, and smiled:

"When Tingting sits on the rocking horse that her father made, she can slide by pushing off with her feet."

Moreover, the rocking horse will rock back and forth, just like a real horse.

Shen Xiaoting's eyes lit up immediately. She jumped up from the ground, clapping her hands and shouting, "This is so much fun! Daddy, hurry up and do it! Hurry up and do it!"

Upon hearing this conversation, the chat room erupted in activity once again.

"A walking rocking horse? What are you talking about, streamer?"

"It's one of those rocking horses with a curved bottom and wheels, where kids can ride it and glide by pushing off with their feet."

"I've seen those kinds of Trojan horses on Taobao; they sell for three or four hundred yuan each."

"The anchor wants to make it himself? This is much more difficult than a swing; the curved parts require precise curve cutting."

"Looking forward to it! The streamer is so professional at even playing on a swing, so he should be able to handle a Trojan horse just as well."

Chen Hao picked up the red oak plank and began to draw lines.

He used a curve ruler to draw the outline of the horse's body on the wooden board—

The horse's back is arched, its neck is raised, its head is slightly extended forward, and its tail hangs down naturally.

After drawing it, he used a jigsaw to cut along the line.

He handled the jigsaw very steadily, the blade following the curve perfectly, producing smooth and clean edges.

Shen Xiaoting squatted down beside him, watching her father cut wood. Sawdust flew everywhere and fell to the ground like a layer of fine snow.

She picked up a piece of sawdust, blew on it, and the sawdust floated up and landed on her father's shoe. She giggled.

"Tingting, bring Daddy the sandpaper, the finest kind."

Shen Xiaoting ran to the pile of tools, rummaged through the sandpaper, took out the finest one, and ran back to hand it to her father.

Chen Hao took the sandpaper and began to sand the edges of the horse's body—removing the burrs left from the cutting and rounding the sharp corners.

The sandpaper made a "shh" sound on the wood, and wood shavings fell down in fine pieces.

After polishing, he began to make the horse's legs.

The horse has four legs, each made of square pine wood.

He used a saw to cut the square timber into four sections, each 25 centimeters long, then used a plane to smooth the surface, and finally used a chisel to make tenons at the top.

The protruding part is rectangular in shape and is inserted into the mortise at the bottom of the horse's body.

Shen Xiaoting couldn't resist helping. She picked up a piece of the already-made horse leg, examined it from all angles, and asked, "Dad, how do we attach this?"

"Look at the bottom of the horse's body. Dad dug four holes and inserted the tenons for the horse's legs to secure it."

Shen Xiaoting looked down at the bottom of the horse's body and sure enough, there were four square holes.

She aligned the tip of the horse's leg with a hole and tried to insert it, but it wouldn't go in.

The tenon is slightly larger than the mortise.

"Dad, it won't go in."

"So it needs to be fixed." Chen Hao took the horse leg, gently trimmed the edge of the tenon with a chisel, and then tried it. It fit perfectly.

He attached all four horse legs and then began to make the horse head.

The horse head was pieced together from scraps of material.

A thick wooden board was cut into the shape of a horse's head, two small wooden blocks were used for the ears, and two thin wooden strips were used for the reins.

He used wood glue to stick the ears to the horse's head, secured them with clips, and waited for the glue to dry.

After the glue dried, he attached the horse's head to the horse's body using mortise and tenon joints.

A tenon was cut at the top of the horse's neck, and a mortise was cut at the bottom of the horse's head. They fit together perfectly.

Then secure it from the side with wood screws to ensure the horse's head doesn't wobble.

Next came the saddle.

He took a small piece of brown leather, cut it into an oval shape, glued it to the center of the horse's back with leather glue, and then secured the edges with small nails.

The leather has a great texture and won't slip when you sit on it.

Finally, there are the wheels.

He attached a small wheel to the bottom of each of the horse's four legs.

These are not ordinary omnidirectional wheels, but fixed wheels, which can only roll forward and backward, and cannot turn left or right.

This way, the rocking horse won't veer off course while gliding, making it safer.

The wheels are secured with screws. After tightening them, I turned them by hand and they rotated smoothly.
