The Fiery Era: Starting from Longxugou

Chapter 13 Potential Crisis

"Shi'an, how's it going? Have you finished all the chores around the house?"

In the early morning, seeing his deskmate arrive, Wang Zhijie asked with concern.

"It's done. There's not much land; it'll be finished in a few days."

"That's good, now you can focus on your studies."

"Yes! Morning reading is about to start, let's get ready to recite!"

Zhao Shi'an nodded, took out a Russian book from his desk drawer, and began memorizing vocabulary.

Although Russian is difficult to learn, it is required for the college entrance examination, so you still have to memorize it.

Fortunately, the original owner had started learning Russian in junior high school. After studying for several years, although he couldn't remember too many words, he could still read the words from the book. The difficult part was the various declensions and conjugations in the sentence structure.

"Memorizing Russian?"

"That's right! You have to learn Russian eventually, whether you learn it sooner or later. Just memorize it now, you never know when you might need it for the exam!"

Seeing his deskmate's reaction, Zhao Shi'an offered an explanation.

"That's true. Chinese is easy to memorize, and chemistry and biology are simple, but Russian requires a huge amount of effort to learn!"

Wang Zhijie agreed wholeheartedly and took out his Russian book to read aloud as well.

Zhao Shi'an glanced at it and continued reciting. As the school bell rang, the classroom was filled with the sound of students reading aloud.

After morning reading, there was a ten-minute break before the regular classes began.

The first two classes were Chinese and Russian, which were just held yesterday afternoon. Zhao Shi'an was still taking notes diligently during class so that he could get used to vertical writing and traditional Chinese characters as soon as possible.

After Russian class ended, as soon as the teacher left the classroom, Wang Zhijie eagerly urged:

"Shi'an, go to the playground for exercises! The school really knows how to be considerate of us."

Knowing that Russian class is difficult, I scheduled it for the second period. After class, we went straight to exercise, and my head felt much clearer afterward!

"That's true, the school really has good intentions!"

"That's to keep you from getting sleepy. Doing some exercises will help you warm up before continuing the lesson!"

Chen Yongfu interjected.

"Hey! It's all the same! Let's go, let's do exercises!"

As he spoke, Wang Zhijie put his arm around Zhao Shi'an's shoulder and pulled him out of the classroom.

After leaving the west courtyard, the group went to the playground in the middle courtyard, where junior high and senior high students were divided into different areas and lined up according to their grade and class.

Looking at the crowd on the playground, Zhao Shi'an followed Wang Zhijie and Chen Yongfu to his class's location and found a good spot to stand.

Soon after, a deep voice and military music came over the loudspeaker:

"Develop sports, improve people's physical fitness, raise vigilance, and defend the motherland."

Now let's start doing radio calisthenics.

"Stand still, march! One, two, one, two, one..."

Hearing this slogan, so characteristic of the times, Zhao Shi'an followed the instructions broadcast over the loudspeaker.

"Halt! Upper limbs movement, ready, go!"

1, 2, 3, 4…

Hearing the announcements from the loudspeaker, the students followed the instructions and began their morning exercises.

Zhao Shi'an stood in the crowd doing exercises. He had the original owner's memories, and although he was a little awkward at first, he quickly adapted.

The first section of upper limb exercises was somewhat similar to routines and boxing techniques in martial arts. While doing the exercises, he wondered which set of broadcast gymnastics this was. Why didn't the broadcast mention it? It just told us to do exercises!

I remember when I was in school, the elementary school assignment was the second set of "Young Eagles Take Flight," and the middle school assignment was "The Times Are Calling."

It's only 54 years now, and radio calisthenics should still be in its early stages. The ones being done now are very likely the first set of radio calisthenics.

But this doesn't quite match the second set he learned from memory.

If they are part of the same system, then the time gap between the first and second sets is too long! It's impossible that it's been over seventy years since the first set of broadcast gymnastics was updated, right?

Moreover, this set of broadcast exercises is quite long, with 10 sections, whereas he only did 8 sections from elementary school to junior high.

It seems that the two are not from the same system.

After figuring it out, Zhao Shi'an continued doing his exercises.

After finishing their exercises, the students played on the playground. The two simple basketball hoops on the playground were the most popular. As soon as the group dispersed, five or six students carrying basketballs ran to grab a spot, and the basketball court was instantly crowded with people.

After watching for a while, Zhao Shi'an went to the restroom to take care of personal matters.

The toilets in this era were all dry toilets, and in the summer they smelled terrible, so bad that people couldn't open their eyes, and you could even see maggots crawling around everywhere. Fortunately, it's only late March now, and the weather is still relatively cold, so the smell isn't so strong.

After leaving the restroom, Zhao Shi'an strolled around the campus. He had only taken a brief look around yesterday afternoon when he went to school.

It's recess time now, and the campus is quite noisy.

Wandering through corridors and courtyards, the campus is full of vibrant and lively teenagers. Their laughter and shouts, carried on the spring breeze, make even the sunlight feel refreshing.

Looking at the group of energetic and spirited students in front of him, his weary heart also became lively.

The spring breeze swept away the vicissitudes of his life, and time was kind to him, actually allowing him to return to his youth.

Zhao Shi'an wandered around the campus for a long time until the school bell rang, waking him up. He reluctantly returned to the classroom.

"Shi'an, where did you go? I couldn't find you! You were asking me to play soccer with you!"

Seeing his deskmate return, Wang Zhijie asked in a low voice.

"Go ahead and kick it! My shoes will really break if you keep kicking them."

As Zhao Shi'an spoke, he stretched out his foot and shook his cotton shoes, whose soles had become noticeably thinner.

"Then let's wait until it gets warmer before playing!"

Seeing this, Wang Zhijie didn't press the matter further.

"OK!"

Zhao Shi'an agreed, quickly gathered his thoughts, and took out his biology book to prepare for class.

As soon as the biology teacher walked into the classroom, the class fell silent.

"Class, starting today, we will officially begin studying Michurin's theory!"

As Tao Qiuzhen spoke, he picked up the chalk and began writing on the blackboard.

Zhao Shi'an was puzzled when he heard this. What was this "Michurin theory" about? He had no recollection of it at all.

Don't we all learn Mendel and Morgan's genetics in high school? Is this some new knowledge?

Upon realizing this possibility, he, who had been somewhat nonchalant just moments before, immediately became much more serious.

Zhao Shi'an is a science student. In biology, apart from the calculations in genetics which are like science, his performance in other aspects is more like humanities.

Now that he has encountered knowledge he has never learned before, he naturally has to take it seriously.

After finishing writing on the blackboard, Tao Qiuzhen turned around to face the students in the classroom.

"Students, Comrade Michurin was a great Soviet biologist and breeder."

He dedicated his life to the fields, cultivating over three hundred new varieties of fruit trees. Through his lifelong practice, he summarized truly materialistic biological knowledge belonging to the working people.

At this point, Tao Qiuzhen paused, his gaze sweeping over the students sitting upright below the stage. His tone became more serious as he continued:

"Before formally studying Comrade Michurin's theories, everyone should first have a clear understanding of the boundaries."

The Morganian theory, touted by Western bourgeois scholars, including concepts like chromosomes and genetic inheritance, is nothing but unrealistic idealism and metaphysical pseudoscience…

Upon hearing this, Zhao Shi'an's mind went blank for a moment.

Genes? Chromosomes?

These most basic common sense facts in modern biology textbooks have become pseudoscience to be criticized in this era.

Is this... is this still the creature he knows?

Faced with this huge shock, can this farmer still learn?
