When Zhao Hu and Fang Tiesheng led Ya Ya back to Grandma Liu's courtyard, it was mealtime. The aroma of hot food wafted in the wind, filling the entire courtyard.

A special spot in the yard, lined with wood ash and dry grass, was prepared to hold cattail baskets, and it's now piled high with them.

Most of them were made by the villagers themselves at home.

There are vegetable baskets with small handles, square baskets with small ear handles on both sides, and flat book boxes.

Round, square, tall, and short baskets were crammed together.

Grandpa Wang even came up with a few handles shaped like little animal ears to insert into the design, which looked particularly pleasing.

Most of the baskets are plain, made of natural wood or grass, clean and simple.

Everyone in the courtyard stopped weaving, except for Grandpa Wang, who was still sitting cross-legged on the ground, groping to continue weaving.

"You old man, eating won't take much time, but your hands are all red from being rubbed raw, and you still won't stop," Grandma Wang scolded.

Grandpa Wang twisted his body without raising his head, "Wait a moment, it'll be done soon, finish weaving this pattern."

Grandma Wang had no choice but to prepare the meal first.

When Grandma Liu saw the three of them return, she quickly went to greet them: "How did it go? Did you send the medicine over? Did it work? Why didn't the village chief and Sister Li come with you?"

Fang Tiesheng breathed a sigh of relief, his voice still carrying a hint of relief: "It was delivered, and it worked wonders! Granny Li caught a bad cold, but thankfully Ya Ya managed to buy some fever-reducing medicine from that area, and she felt much better in just fifteen minutes!"

"We've never seen such effective medicine before. A tiny bit, no need to decoct, just swallow it. Granny Li has just recovered; the village chief is still watching over her. She'll come out once she's fully recovered. This time, we really owe a huge debt to Ya Ya; she saved a life!"

Fang Tiesheng's words drew a crowd of villagers, whose hearts pounded as they listened to him.

"Ya Ya brought a lot of medicine. She even knows a fairy-like older sister over there. She put notes on each medicine, writing down the corresponding symptoms and dosage. She's so thoughtful! She even has medicine to treat diarrhea!"

"That works that well? That's for a high fever!"

"That place must be the abode of immortals; one elixir and the illness was cured."

"The village has another layer of protection now... and Ya Ya even recognizes the fairy from over there!"

Ya Ya slid down from Uncle Zhao's arms, her little mouth grinning to reveal two tiny teeth. Sister He Miao is just like a fairy, so beautiful and gentle, and she smells so good.

Little Bean stood quietly to the side; in his eyes, Sister Ya Ya was the real fairy.

Ya Ya turned her gaze and met Xiao Douzi's. Her eyes fell on Xiao Douzi's coarse linen pants, which were only partially visible under his cotton-padded jacket. Suddenly, she remembered something, grabbed Grandpa Fang's trouser leg with one hand, and pulled Xiao Douzi up with the other.

"Grandpa Fang, look quickly! Little Bean fell and hurt himself; the wound is all raw and hasn't healed. Now we have medicine!"

Little Bean was pulled along by her, and his feet followed her into the house involuntarily.

Fang Tiesheng was stunned for a moment. He remembered Xiaodouzi's injury, but he had been busy with many things and hadn't remembered it at all.

Children from poor families are resilient; when they fall or get hurt, they just bear it and wait for themselves to heal on their own.

Upon hearing this, Grandpa and Grandma Li stamped their feet anxiously and waved their hands repeatedly, saying, "No, no, no! Such a small wound doesn't need such expensive medicine! It's a life-saving medicine; we can't waste it on the child!"

Ya Ya wouldn't listen. With her short legs moving quickly, she dragged him into the house.

The medicine and books on the table were all laid out exactly as they were. Little Bean was stunned as soon as he entered the room—books!

Wow, there are so many books!

Fang Tiesheng put Xiaodouzi on the chair and started rummaging through the plastic bag. Yaya climbed onto the kang (a heated brick bed) with a smile and waited.

Sure enough, there was a note inside that explained how to treat ordinary bumps and bruises.

A large crowd had gathered in front of the small earthen house, all craning their necks curiously to see what this miraculous medicine looked like and how it healed people.

But what stunned everyone at first glance wasn't the medicine, but the books that covered half the table, neatly arranged.

The villagers hadn't seen so many books in years, and for a moment, even their breathing became lighter.

Fang Tiesheng adjusted his glasses and prepared the steps and medicine.

Little Bean blushed, slowly gathered her jacket to her waist, revealing her coarse linen trousers, and rolled up the cuffs.

The old wound on his knee was exposed.

A while ago, I was short of salt and didn't have enough to eat, so my wound didn't heal properly and the edges were still ulcerated.

It's heartbreaking to see.

Now that we're eating well and have replenished our salt intake, the edges won't turn black and necrotic, and they're gradually showing more of the pale red color of new meat.

Ya Ya's little brows were furrowed tightly. It looked even more painful than Grandpa Village Chief's wound. Is Little Bean a little silly? He doesn't even make a sound when it hurts so much.

The thought had just popped into her little head when she heard Xiaodouzi let out a loud "Ooh-wah—" sound, as if she were being slaughtered like a pig, and tears streamed down her face.

"Ouch! Ouch! It hurts so much! Waaah, it hurts so much..."

Following the instructions on the small note, Fang Tiesheng found a small bottle of saline solution, gauze, cotton swabs, and a tube of toothpaste-like ointment.

After rinsing with saline solution, a cotton swab was used to apply the brownish-yellow medicine little by little to the necrotic tissue in Xiaodouzi's wound.

I heard the baby screaming as soon as I reached the first floor.

Grandpa and Grandma Li watched from outside, their hearts breaking. "It's all our fault for being careless. Little Bean didn't say anything, so we thought it wasn't a big deal..."

Aunt Lin came over with a spatula. "The food is ready, why are you all here?"

As soon as she reached the door, she heard Xiaodouzi's heart-wrenching cries from inside. She paused, then quickly squeezed in as well.

A room full of people gathered around, feeling both heartache and sighs.

After Fang Tiesheng carefully applied the ointment that looked like toothpaste and wrapped it with a clean cloth, Xiaodouzi was still twitching.

He glanced at Ya Ya, then touched his swollen knee, and suddenly felt that it didn't hurt as much anymore.

"Time to eat!"

Aunt Lin called out.

Everyone then came to their senses. Little Bean, supported by his grandparents, limped to the table and sat down obediently, one hand gently protecting his neatly wrapped knees.

The strip of cloth was even whiter than the white socks he was reluctant to wear; it was clean, soft, and light, and he used almost half of it at once.

Fang Tiesheng gently gathered the medicine and books together.

A table full of neatly arranged books lay quietly, like a room full of silent hope.
