Conquering the Multiverse Starting with the Black Robe
Chapter 7 "Astronaut" The Invisible Man
Beep beep beep, beep beep, beep beep~
An untimely cell phone ringtone suddenly sounded.
Rean lifted the dark-skinned corpse and pulled a specially made satellite phone from his pocket; the screen did not display a number.
He held the satellite phone to his ear, but instead of pressing the answer button, he gave a contemptuous smile to the miniature infrared camera flashing on his black helmet. Then, he clenched his fist and crushed the communication device in his hand into a pile of scrap metal.
Rean lifted his helmet, tilting the camera upwards to face his face, and sneered, "Stan Edgar, I know you can hear me. There's nothing to talk about between us unless you kneel down and apologize to me. Maybe then I'll have mercy and spare your life."
"You enjoy playing these pointless tricks? Fine, I'll play along. From now on, for every hound you release, I'll kill it."
"However, I'm a bit of a coward. If things get out of control and I feel threatened, I might not want to do it alone anymore. I'll look for some help, like the police or the CIA; they'd definitely be happy to cooperate with me."
"I know what you're thinking. Do you really think I'd be stupid enough to destroy all the evidence for you before I leave?"
How many media outlets in New York do you think would be interested in the story of "Omega"?
Rean took a can of blue liquid from his coat pocket, tossed it gently, and smiled knowingly. "If they knew that your so-called superheroes were just mass-produced products made from Compound V, and not the 'chosen ones' you've been so relentlessly promoting, what kind of media storm would that cause?"
But don't worry, I won't do that unless absolutely necessary, because I don't want to destroy you through the hands of others; there's no fun in that.
As soon as he finished speaking, Rean threw down the corpse and stomped on it, aiming it at the camera.
On the other side of the screen, in the Vought Group office, Edgar had an unlit cigar dangling from his mouth. His usually calm face darkened completely when he saw the snowflakes appearing on the tablet.
"Fuck...man, listen to me, calm down, okay?"
As Rean approached step by step, the Invisible Man's arrogant demeanor vanished. He forced a smile that looked more like a grimace, swallowing hard. "What I said earlier was a joke... You know, Walter's contracts always have some weird performance requirements. I just wanted to lighten the mood."
Seeing that Rean remained unmoved, the Invisible Man panicked completely. "OK! OK! I give up. It was Xuan Se who did it, and you've already killed him. We have no grudges against each other, so how about we let this go?"
"You're such a pathetic coward."
Rean flashed by, and the Invisible Man didn't even see his movement clearly. He only felt his vision blur for a moment, and then he found that his throat was firmly held by a hand, and he couldn't move.
Rean grabbed the invisible man, spun him halfway around, and slammed him against the wall next to him. The huge impact smashed a large hole in the wall, and cracks spread like a spider web at the gap, causing the entire shop wall to collapse instantly.
"Ugh..." Blood trickled from the corner of the transparent man's mouth. He felt like he almost passed out. If being hit by the car was only a little painful, then being hit by Rean was like being run over by a train while lying on the tracks.
It's true that his physical defenses are very strong, but that doesn't mean his internal organs are equally indestructible. Severe internal injuries can still endanger his life.
"Don't move! Police!"
Just then, a piercing siren blared, and several SUVs with flashing lights sped over, completely blocking the alleyway.
The arriving police officers were clearly well-trained; as soon as the car door opened, their guns were all pointed at Rean.
When members of the public reported witnessing superhuman crimes, the officers who responded immediately became extremely vigilant and dared not be careless in the slightest.
The lead middle-aged policewoman, holding guns in both hands, shouted, "NYPD! You're surrounded! Put down the hostages! Put your hands up! Don't do anything pointless..."
Rean's gaze was icy as he glanced back at her.
What kind of look was that?
It was as if a high and mighty god was looking down on the ants on the earth, filled with indifference and contempt for everything.
The policewoman's breath caught in her throat, as if a mountain was pressing down on her heart, silencing the words she was about to utter. Her finger was on the trigger, but she hesitated.
Her intuition told her that it was best not to do that, otherwise the consequences would be dire.
"..."
Rean slowly withdrew his gaze, bent his legs slightly, and a radiating aura spread out beneath him. He lifted the transparent man with one hand and soared into the night sky.
"Sir, was that Homelander just now?" The young officer next to him was dumbfounded. The man's imposing presence was so strong that he didn't dare to breathe and almost dropped his gun.
The policewoman suddenly realized that she had been sweating profusely without her noticing. Fortunately, the rain concealed the abnormality and her subordinates did not notice anything amiss. Otherwise, she would have been in deep trouble if word got out.
She looked up at the sky, but could no longer see Rean. She shook her head, her face as pale as paper. "Of course he's not... but we can confirm the identity of the person lying on the ground."
The officer exclaimed, "Shit, it's black!"
Thunder rumbled in the sky.
The brewing thunderclouds were restless, like a beast in heat, recklessly venting its pent-up energy.
Every time a bolt of lightning rips through the night sky, it illuminates the Invisible Man's face, whose expression gradually contorts with extreme fear.
He had never experienced this feeling before. After all, the people of the motherland were solitary, and even if they did, they would only take women on their flights, never men.
The wind howled fiercely in my ears, and the raindrops stopped falling and instead became like pebbles falling from the sky, hitting my face with a pattering sound.
As the altitude continued to rise, the city on the ground appeared and disappeared under the cover of clouds, and the lights of thousands of homes turned into a hazy glimmer in the blink of an eye.
"Where...where are you taking me?!" the invisible man roared. As the altitude gradually increased, the lack of oxygen caused him physical discomfort, but what frightened him even more was that he couldn't figure out what this terrifying guy wanted to do.
He was an expert in lip reading, considered himself to be a first-rate reader, and adept at understanding other people's psychology, yet he was helpless against the boy in front of him who looked to be seventeen or eighteen years old.
Rean gazed at the lightning leaping deep into the clouds and said loudly, "The power of lightning is generally between one hundred million and one billion volts, and the temperature generated instantly can reach five times that of the sun's surface. And your carbonized skin that you are so proud of... hehe, is an excellent conductive material."
The Invisible Man didn't understand the first half of the story, but he understood it later. Damn, this idiot is trying to electrocute himself!
"No! You devil, put me down!"
"Get off? Then I'll let go."
"No! Are you crazy? You'll get electrocuted too!"
Rean remained silent and noncommittal, then suddenly changed the subject, "How about we play a game, let's see who's tougher and who gets struck by lightning first?" As he spoke, he moved closer to the thunderclouds.
"No! No!!" The invisible man struggled frantically. He knew his weakness, of course. Ordinary electric current was enough to knock him unconscious. Faced with the immense power of nature, there was absolutely no chance of survival.
Unfortunately, his meager strength was far superior to Xuan Se's, let alone compared to Li En.
What do you want? Money?
I have money, I can give you a large sum of money!
I can tell you all the rotten things about Walter!
What secret do you want to know?
Madeline?
I even secretly filmed her private life with Homelander! Please, don't kill me, I have a newborn son, he can't lose his father!
Rean seemed to be persuaded by him, and slowed down his flight. "If you want to live, it's simple. I want you to be my eyes and ears, to keep an eye on Homelander and monitor his every move."
Report to me everything that goes on in that tower every day, even how many bags of milk Homelander drank today, and how he drank them—you have to tell me everything, understand?
"OK! I swear! I'll do exactly what you say!" The Invisible Man nodded hastily, wanting nothing more than to calm this madman down and get out of this hellhole. "I promise you, just find somewhere to drop me off, buddy, it's way too dangerous here!"
Rean stared at him for a while, then paused in mid-air.
"You're trying to lie to me. Once we get back to Water Tower, you'll immediately report to Homelander and then incite him to hunt me down, won't you?"
His inner thoughts were exposed on the spot, and the Invisible Man nearly had a heart attack. He vehemently denied it, "No! How could that be? Dude, to be honest, I've disliked Homelander for a long time. I'll cooperate with you to take him down. You'll be the boss, and I'll be your sidekick!"
"No, you're lying." Rean shook his head slightly, pointing his finger at his chest. "Your body is much more honest than you are. I can hear it. Your heart is beating like a drumbeat; it's already betrayed you."
"I'm just afraid of heights, really!"
"You know what? I've suddenly changed my mind. Actually, you weren't the best candidate to begin with, and... you weren't the only option either."
The invisible man finally broke down, weeping uncontrollably, "You inhuman monster, you'll go to hell!"
"Then you'd better pray you don't run into me there again."
Instead of flying forward, Rean tilted his head back and sprinted upwards, passing through the top of the clouds.
Before long, he led the naked man through the troposphere and into the vicinity of the stratosphere.
The surrounding air was thinner, almost nonexistent, the air pressure changed drastically, the temperature plummeted to nearly minus sixty degrees Celsius, and the environment became extremely harsh.
Apart from Rean and his companion, there were no other living creatures around, making it seem like a natural no-man's-land.
Staying here, Rean himself didn't feel very comfortable. He felt a slight tightness in his chest, his hair and eyebrows quickly frosted over, and his wet clothes began to freeze, making a crackling sound when he moved, as hard as a sheet of aluminum.
Rean activated the life energy within his body, and the abnormal symptoms that had appeared in his body instantly vanished without a trace.
It seems that his current physical strength is not enough to fly away from Earth at will like Superman. His ability does not include a biological field, which is equivalent to lacking a "protective shield". There may be some risks in facing cosmic radiation directly.
Looking at the invisible person beside him, the other person's naked body had already begun to freeze, frozen like a grandson, looking just like a human popsicle.
The transparent man shivered and looked down at an endless, slowly churning sea of clouds. He looked up to see a huge full moon overhead.
The oppressive force emanating from this colossal celestial object was almost tangible. His consciousness was scattered, and the enormous, luminous sphere grew closer and closer in his eyes, as if it were approaching the "Roche limit." The chilling light tore his mind apart inch by inch.
"Do you know?"
A voice pulled him out of the endless abyss. The transparent man swayed back to reality, feeling that his brain had frozen, his thoughts were in chaos, and he couldn't even speak.
The man, bathed in moonlight, spoke in a magnetic voice that resonated in the deathly silence of the high sky, yet it seemed to possess an inexplicable divine quality that reached his ears.
"I've had a dream since I was a child: to become an astronaut. Back then, I thought it would be really cool to ride a rocket into space and see what the Earth looks like. But as I grew older and learned more, I realized how difficult it would be to achieve that goal, so I gave up on that dream."
Rean had noticed the Invisible Man's unusual behavior long ago, but he didn't care.
"Kill me..." The transparent man's hoarse voice seemed to be squeezed out of his throat, and his eyes were bloodshot due to conjunctival congestion caused by the extreme environment.
"No, your mission is not yet complete," Rean said softly. "You must fulfill my childhood dream."
As soon as he finished speaking, the transparent man's skin began to crack. His supposedly indestructible, "absolute defense" supermaterial skin was useless in the face of the extremely domineering ability of life absorption. Just like a tank in a game with high armor and health, it can't withstand the true damage caused by percentage.
"No!--"
A mournful cry was swallowed up by the silence.
Ten seconds later, a living person disappeared.
Instead, there was a fist-sized, pitch-black carbonized crystal.
It lay quietly in Rean's palm, its surface smooth as a mirror, its hardness exceeding that of any material on Earth, far stronger than a diamond, like a meteorite from another galaxy.
Rean gripped the "stone," took a deep breath, unleashed the life force accumulated within him, channeled it to his right arm, and used the power of his entire body to throw it forcefully into space.
After absorbing the dark life force, his progress bar increased by 55%, and his physical attributes improved in all aspects. This deepened his understanding of life energy, allowing him to comprehend a new skill—compressing and condensing the energy accumulated in his body, and then significantly amplifying his power through an instantaneous burst.
Moreover, this power is no longer confined to the body; it can be released to form a special aura in the outside world. Unfortunately, its strength is limited and probably does not reach the level of a biological field.
Without testing, Rean roughly deduced that this aura should be able to resist mental attacks or shield against toxic gases.
call out--
The crystal emitted a sharp whistle, instantly breaking the sound barrier, and hurtled straight into the distant atmosphere at a speed exceeding Mach 30, instantly transforming into a point of light and merging into the stars.
"The stars and the sea are your true home."
