Conquering the Multiverse Starting with the Black Robe
Chapter 40 Meeting
The leverage Edgar held in his hand was the source of his confidence to challenge his homelanders. He knew how obsessed this man was with family ties—a desire bordering on the abnormal.
From the very beginning of Homelander's birth, Walter arranged for top psychologists to deliberately cultivate his personality flaws.
For example, his Oedipus complex, his desire for recognition, and his inability to tolerate others' disappointment in him are all designed to make him easier to control than the soldier boy.
However, Edgar was unaware that Homelander was gradually slipping out of his control, and what Madeline was hiding was just the beginning, a trigger.
Edgar was ultimately just an ordinary person. He might have been very intelligent, but the problem was that he was too rational. He was so rational that he would always weigh the pros and cons before doing anything, and he always adhered to the mindset of a businessman who was also inclined towards politician.
But no one ever thought that some people never act rationally and never consider the consequences of their actions, because they have the ability to overturn the table from the very beginning.
Edgar ignored Homelander's grim expression; he had seen it, but he didn't care, and continued speaking to himself, "He now lives in a simulated town, monitored and educated by a professional team from Vought International."
He is kind-hearted, well-educated, has his own hobbies, and a loving mother. The only thing he didn't know was that he had a father like you.
Homelander's face darkened, his eyes gleaming with a menacing red light. His tone was grim. "Edgar, you kept this from me for eight years! How dare you treat my own flesh and blood like lab rats, keeping them in a damned cage?!"
Edgar, as the ruler of Walter, had experienced countless storms and was no stranger to death threats. His heart didn't even race; his calm, icy eyes held only ruthless mockery.
"We are protecting him. And all you can do is throw tantrums like an immature child. You are both incompetent and pathetic."
How can someone like you educate and raise a child? You'll only make things worse.
"If you want to see him, you have to learn to behave."
The villains have shown more power than I expected; they have built a team, a terrorist organization, and they are operating in a planned manner.
Go kill him, or subdue him and bring him back.
"If you perform well, I'll consider arranging a meeting between you and Ryan."
Homelander stared at Edgar, his eyes burning with a red light that illuminated the entire office in a crimson glow.
But in the end, when it came to his only surviving descendant, he had to compromise.
Even he himself did not notice that a sense of fear and unease had crept into his heart.
Edgar, an ordinary man with no trace of Compound V in his body, where did he get the confidence to threaten him? How many secrets is he hiding from him?
Homelander said in a low voice, his face grim, "I will deal with the villains. But listen to me, Edgar, if my son loses a single hair, I will overthrow Water Tower."
"Get back to work," Edgar waved his hand dismissively, as if shooing away a fly.
Homelander's lips twitched. He turned around, ready to leave.
But as he reached the door, he suddenly stopped, put his hands on his hips, flicked his cloak, and turned around with a sinister smile on his face. "There's something very interesting I almost forgot to tell you."
"You know what, Edgar. You really need to see a doctor. I mean, your blood's as thick as maple syrup." He gestured with his finger, indicating a distance. "You're just a hair's breadth away from coronary artery disease."
"I sincerely hope you live well, Edgar, at least until the day I completely control Walter and oust you."
As soon as he finished speaking, he turned and slammed into the French window, his figure disappearing without a trace like a blurry streak of light.
A strong wind blew into the office from high above. "Damn it," Edgar shook his head, returned to his office chair, picked up the landline, and dialed a number.
Someone answered the phone quickly.
"Hello, Mr. Edgar, what can I do for you?"
Edgar didn't mince words and went straight to the order, "You need to speed things up."
There was a pause on the other end of the phone, followed by a hesitant reply, "...But sir, the virus is not stable enough yet."
Edgar tapped his fingers on the table and gestured for the security personnel who had rushed over to wait. "If necessary, human experiments can be conducted. Contact my people if you need anything, and be sure to expedite the process."
"As you wish, sir."
……
"Sunshine Colors—"
"Frankie, turn off the TV sound. Feeding?"
Rean glanced at the caller ID and instructed French to answer the phone.
"Hey, it's me... Father."
Homelander stood hundreds of meters in the air, looking down at New York. His tone was complicated. He didn't know how to tell Rean about this. His mind was a mess, and he couldn't stop his wild thoughts.
"What's wrong, son? You're already missing me after only a short while?" Rean's eyes flickered slightly. He turned on the speakerphone on his phone, raised his hand to signal Butcher and the others to be quiet, and waited for Homelander to get to the point.
"It's like this... I was wondering if you have some time tonight? I'd like to invite you to dinner, to maybe get to know each other better."
Homelander tried to keep his tone as mild as possible. He didn't know Rean's temperament and personality. He couldn't find any information about "villains" in the archives, which Edgar had obviously destroyed.
Strangely enough, this was the first time he had ever spoken to someone in this tone, and the first time he had ever seriously considered someone else's feelings.
It feels... kind of good?
Of course, this was because he had already accepted Rean's identity from the bottom of his heart and felt that Rean was qualified to let him do this.
"Sure. That sounds good. When?" Rean agreed almost without hesitation.
He didn't know what the Homelander's intentions were, but refusing was clearly not a good idea, and there was no reason to refuse.
It's perfectly reasonable for a son to treat his father to a meal, even in a place like America where family values aren't particularly emphasized.
People in our motherland value family ties far more than ordinary people, because they have never had them before, so they cherish them all the more.
The bond between them was fragile, based entirely on Rean's own account, which was full of holes. If the other party became suspicious, things would be bad.
Besides, this can hardly be called a trap. Rean is fairly confident in his own strength. Even if he can't defeat the other party, escaping shouldn't be a problem. Even if Walter's men have laid an ambush beforehand, he's not afraid.
Rean suddenly realized that if he wanted to confront Walter head-on, he would not only have to beat Homelander, but in fact, he would probably have to face the storm and the bomb's vision at the same time.
This doesn't even include a slow-moving old boy.
And countless, all sorts of superpowered individuals, some of whom possess seemingly insignificant abilities that are actually quite powerful.
In the original storyline, someone took advantage of Homelander's carelessness and used his bad breath to knock him unconscious in a single breath. He was unconscious for quite some time. If someone had acted quickly, they could have done everything they could.
As for Edgar's adopted daughter, Newman the Headshot Girl, he didn't care much. Her ability was based on the same blood control principle as Mary from Generation V, or even slightly inferior.
This seemingly unbeatable skill is actually quite useless. Its upper limit is at most comparable to the Starlight tier, making it a god-tier skill for crushing noobs.
She was powerless against superhumans like Homelander and Soldier Man; otherwise, she would have killed Homelander long ago instead of wasting several years secretly working on the virus.
Regardless of whether Newman could break through his defenses, in front of Rean, who controlled life energy, the so-called blood control ability was nothing compared to his own.
Unless he eliminates all these obstacles or builds a force strong enough to rival Walter, he will have to continue to live a life of pretense, and this sham father-son relationship will have to continue.
Rean didn't feel any displeasure about this, since he wasn't at a disadvantage in this role.
Upon receiving an affirmative reply, the person on the other end of the phone felt inexplicably relieved and couldn't help but excitedly raise their hand and clench their fist.
"Very good, very good." Homelander circled twice in the air and said "good" twice, his joy barely concealed.
French and Butcher listened quietly, exchanging a glance, both seeing a look of utter disbelief on each other's faces.
