My Three Kingdoms is not right
Chapter 64 Racing Against Time
Just as Sun Yi was about to lose his life, an arrow pierced the air and shot the cavalryman with the sword off his horse.
Zhao Yun lowered his bow, flicked his silver spear, and knocked down another enemy cavalryman who had already scaled the wall. He nodded to Sun Yi: "Don't get distracted."
After about half an hour, Lü Bu's army ultimately failed to break through the camp and withdrew.
The Tangshan camp had changed its appearance by then.
Three sections of the eastern stockade wall had collapsed. The moat outside the stockade wall was almost half-filled with corpses and wounded horses, and blood flowed down the slope, bubbling with dark red in the morning light.
The antlers concentrated on the north side had been repeatedly rammed and pulled by the cavalry, and were now scattered in pieces.
The Imperial Guards also suffered significant casualties. Liu Xun glanced around and saw at least seventy or eighty men being carried away, most of them seriously injured.
"Your Highness." Xu Huang walked over, a still-bleeding cut on her left arm. She tore off a strip of cloth with her teeth and bandaged herself with one hand. "The next wave will be even tougher."
Liu Xun knew she was referring to the Trapped Camp.
That heavily armored infantry unit never truly engaged in combat throughout the entire second wave of the attack.
They were advancing slowly, and now they were less than two hundred paces from the outside of the stockade wall.
Gao Shun was clearly waiting—waiting for a crack to appear in the Imperial Guards' defenses, waiting for the crossbow bolts to run out, waiting for the opportune moment to strike a fatal blow.
Standing on the stockade wall, Liu Xun watched the movement of Lü Bu's army not far away and suddenly made a decision that surprised everyone.
"The Imperial Guards mount their horses!"
"Zilong, follow me into battle."
Zhao Yun paused for a moment, then pursed his lips and mounted his warhorse.
She wanted to advise Liu Xun against taking the risk, but then realized that her words were meaningless.
Just stay with him.
The gate was breached; there was no need to open it. Liu Xun charged out first, followed closely by Zhao Yun. The three hundred Imperial Guards cavalrymen, like swords drawn from their sheaths, thrust straight at Lü Bu's army, which was still adjusting its formation.
Lu Bu's army was clearly not expected that the Imperial Guards would dare to counterattack. Some tried to intercept them, while others prepared to carry out the previous orders and move to the designated positions.
Before the battle even began, the team was already in disarray.
Zhao Yun rushed ahead of Liu Xun and was the first to charge into the enemy formation.
The silver spear bloomed like a pear blossom, instantly piercing through two enemy riders.
Liu Xun followed closely behind, charging into the enemy ranks. His spear thrust left and right, his movements not as skillful as Zhao Yun's, but relying on his fast horse and strong armor, he managed to defeat several men. Seeing their commander's ferocity, the cavalry behind him were greatly encouraged and charged forward in a frenzy.
Lu Bu's vanguard was thrown into chaos, with men and horses falling in disarray.
Liu Xun's eyes lit up, and he was about to seize the opportunity to expand the chaos when he saw a valiant general leading his troops out from the side and blocking the imperial guards' route.
"Zhang Liao is here!" The general shouted, blocking Zhao Yun's fierce attack.
Further away, the thunderous sound of hooves could be heard as Lü Bu left the central army and personally rushed towards them, intending to surround and kill Liu Xun's cavalry in the formation.
"Your Highness! Do not linger in battle!" Zhao Yun shouted urgently, forcing Zhang Liao back with his spear.
Liu Xun also saw the danger and decisively ordered, "Retreat!"
The cavalry turned their horses around and retreated back into the camp. Zhang Liao was not about to let them get away and led his troops in hot pursuit.
"Crossbowmen, provide cover!" Xu Huang urgently ordered from behind the low wall.
The remaining crossbow bolts fired in unison, though not densely, they still forced Zhang Liao's cavalry to slow down slightly.
Liu Xun led his cavalry to retreat back into the camp.
Although this counterattack was short-lived, it achieved tremendous results.
No fewer than a hundred of Lü Bu's cavalrymen fell in battle, but more importantly, they bought more time.
Lu Bu suddenly reined in his Red Hare.
She recognized the boy at a glance.
His heroic posture on horseback was so upright and moving.
His handsome face was stained with a few drops of blood and dust, but his eyes were still surprisingly bright.
"Your Highness," Lu Bu said with a smile, "I failed to satisfy you in Xiapi last time, so today is a good day to catch up."
As she spoke, her gaze lingered involuntarily on the young man's face for a moment longer. The last time they met, he was dressed in casual clothes, as gentle and refined as a young master from a noble family. Now, he was clad in armor and holding a spear, yet there was an indescribable heroic spirit between his brows.
The more she looked at this man, the more she wanted him.
"Why must Your Highness be my enemy?" Lü Bu softened his tone. "I am the greatest warrior in the world. Come back to Xiapi with me, and I will treat you well."
Liu Xun almost laughed out of anger.
Damn it, you led a large army to attack this early in the morning, are you trying to steal my wife?
"General Lü's kindness is truly appreciated," he said loudly. "If the general can repent and reform, I will plead for you before the Empress and treat you well in Xuchang!"
Lu Bu finally lost his patience.
She understood that every quarter of an hour wasted here meant that Cao Cao's reinforcements would get a little closer.
If we want to achieve our goal of establishing the camp, we can't delay any longer!
"Gao Shun!" Her voice was icy. "Trap Camp, break through their camp with all your might!"
The long-awaited Trapped Camp made its move.
Five hundred heavily armored infantrymen advanced simultaneously, their large shields lined up like a wall, and long halberds protruding from the gaps between the shields, exuding a chilling aura.
Liu Xun's heart sank.
-----------------
Horse hooves pounded the mud, and banners fluttered like clouds.
Cao Cao rode his horse through the center of the army, his crimson cloak billowing in the wind. Her face was ashen, her phoenix eyes fixed on the direction of Tangshan ahead.
Even though they were still far away and she couldn't even see the banners, she could still feel the sounds of battle shouts ringing in her ears.
"Pass on the order—" Her voice was low, but it made the messenger beside her shudder. "Have the vanguard speed up, and the rearguard run to catch up."
"My lord!" Cheng Yu urged his horse closer and said, "Xiahou Dun's troops are still arrayed on the left flank. If we accelerate rashly, the formation on both flanks may become disjointed."
"Tell her to follow."
Cheng Yu opened his mouth, but met Cao Cao's gaze.
Those phoenix eyes no longer held their usual composure and calmness, but instead a burning anxiety.
She swallowed her words.
Having followed Cao Cao for so long, she knew very well what that look meant.
"Speed up!" The messenger galloped past the ranks, shouting sternly, "The lord has ordered the entire army to speed up!"
The dull drumbeats changed rhythm, shifting from a steady, slow march to a rapid, advancing drumbeat. Cao Cao's infantry began to jog forward, the clanging of armor as dense as a torrential downpour.
Cao Cao gripped the reins tightly.
She had never been so nervous.
She wasn't worried that Lü Bu could cause any trouble.
When she learned that Lü Bu had broken out of Xiapi, she remained as calm as ever.
But when she received a report from scouts that Lü Bu's 4,000-strong army was attacking the Imperial Guard camp, she went berserk.
Military orders were issued from the central command, and tens of thousands of soldiers, like a giant elephant that had not yet woken up, were whipped into running.
"Report—" A scout galloped up from the front, tumbling over in front of Cao Cao's horse. "The right wing of Yue Jin's troops hasn't caught up yet. They say a group of men is stuck in the road!"
"Xu Chu." Cao Cao beckoned to the person beside him.
"Your subordinate is here!"
"Send word to Yue Jin, tell her to behead the military commander of Nagqu and send him here immediately."
"promise!"
Cheng Yu glanced at Guo Jia on horseback beside him, but saw that she was looking straight ahead, as if she hadn't heard anything.
At that moment, Cao Cao issued another order: "Order all units to maintain their formation and distance. Any unit that falls behind will be punished for delaying military operations."
Cheng Yu swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue.
Your Highness, you must hold on.
Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to live like this...
