Chapter 3 Red Dragon 3
The crater, with a ring-shaped top.
A dark brown salamander tilted its head, its gaze puzzled. In its field of vision was a creature that, after looking around, was digging into the rocks and crunching as it sat on a small island formed of high-melting-point metals and rocks in the lava lake at the bottom of the volcano.
It is six feet long from head to tail, looks about the size of a small deer, has all four limbs, and also has wings and a long tail.
Its body is covered with smooth, dark red scales. It has two large, swept-back horns on its head, a bird-beak-like snout, a small nose, a row of small horns on its cheeks and jaw, and two eyes that look like bright volcanoes.
Although it is a fledgling dragon, it already possesses a ferocity and strength far exceeding that of lions and tigers, exhibiting strength, immaturity, and majesty all at the same time.
Click.
Zhang Xun chewed the stone in his mouth with his dragon teeth, making a crunching sound. He easily chewed it up like a peanut and swallowed it into his stomach. His abdomen felt slightly warm, and a subtle warm current flowed through his body.
The rock was quickly shaved into sharp protrusions. With a thud, the fledgling dragon flapped its wings and accelerated, crashing headfirst into the rock, sending fragments of stone flying.
He shook his head, feeling slightly dizzy, and raised it.
Zhang Xun shook his wings to remove the scale fragments and plunged into the lava lake.
When it resurfaced, it had climbed ashore from another spot, leaning against the rock wall, its tail curled up, its body rolled into a ball, its lava-like eyes gleaming thoughtfully.
"From the current perspective, I do not lack any innate abilities."
The Red Dragon, the leader of the five-colored dragons, possesses exceptionally powerful innate abilities and a strong magical talent. As it grows, it will gradually master fire magic and dragon breath, but it needs to reach the juvenile dragon stage to begin to master and use these abilities proficiently.
In the early stages of dragonhood, they are far from possessing the power of a true dragon and can only rely on their innate strong physique.
It includes scales stronger than steel, claws as sharp as blades, immense strength capable of tearing tigers and leopards apart, legendary fire resistance, and a stomach like a magical furnace that can digest almost anything.
Dragons can even eat soil to survive, without slowing down their growth rate.
However, proud dragons usually regard this as a disgrace.
Zhang Xun didn't think anything of it. Perhaps because he had one soul and two bodies, he wasn't greatly affected by the Red Dragon's cunning, greedy, arrogant, and conceited nature.
In the bloodline inheritance, there are also many stories of red dragons dying. Less than half of them died in life-or-death battles, while the majority died because of their arrogance and conceit.
"What a bunch of idiots! So what if we eat dirt? After we conquer the world, we'll all be proud to eat dirt!"
Zhang Xun gave a disdainful snort and dismissed the thought.
"Then--"
Its eyes moved, gazing out of the crater—as its pupils contracted, the subtle flow and diffusion of magic within its body allowed the fledgling dragon to see clearly into the distance, unaffected by the darkness—thus it could see the night sky shrouded in layers of hazy mist.
"The gray fog, coupled with the absence of fire element in the air which creates another kind of gloomy energy, and the invisible connection between the dragon's body and the human body, almost certainly indicates that this is not the Red Dragon's native world, but somewhere north of Flying Scythe City."
Zhang Xun thought to himself:
"Furthermore, I haven't heard of any volcanoes within the city limits, so they're probably outside the city, in the fog zone."
In Flying Scythe City, information about the Fog Zone doesn't circulate much among the lower levels. Most people only know that many terrifying beasts and monsters live in the Fog Zone, and the wandering ghosts that roam into the city are just a very small minority of them.
The red dragon hatchlings, with their innate physical strength, are fearless of lions and tigers.
But most of the demons are stronger than lions and tigers, so Zhang Xun wasn't sure how to compare himself directly to a demon.
Fortunately, this is a volcanic crater, and the red dragon is not afraid of lava, so it should be impossible for the ghost to enter.
There's no need to worry about encountering a ghost for the time being.
"It's best to wait until you've grown a bit more and are more confident before venturing out to explore the situation."
"Or perhaps they obtained some information about the fog zone from the human side... Right, the human side?"
"Since the red dragon form cannot go out, let alone cross the fog zone to reach Dongluo Town, how can we provide assistance in human form?"
Zhang Xun suddenly felt troubled.
His earlier connection with the red dragon led him to mistakenly believe that they were not far apart, and he thought that with the red dragon's help, he could hunt prey, obtain money, and support his martial arts training.
Now that we're in a foggy area, all talk is just empty rhetoric.
If one cannot make progress in martial arts training, let alone obtain intelligence from the foggy area, given the environment of Flying Scythe City—
Zhang Xun recalled the tragic deaths of the Liu family that evening and the scene of his mother being bullied by gang thugs. He scratched a mark on the rock beneath him with his claws.
"The security situation in Feilian District is generally poor. Not to mention the gangs that bully others, things like what happened to the Liu family are not uncommon in the slums. If this goes on for too long, there's a good chance that my family will suffer an accident. If that happens, we'll both be in danger. If one of us is in trouble, the other might not survive either."
"We must improve people's living conditions as soon as possible, at least by moving them from the slums to the main area of the town. There are more martial artists and police officers patrolling there regularly, so the probability of being disturbed by evil spirits is much lower."
"Practicing martial arts, moving... I really can't help if the Red Dragon isn't in Dongluo Town..."
"I can't wait any longer, I need to see what's going on outside the crater..."
The young dragon looked up at the crater above its head, propped itself up on its tail, and stood up on its hind legs.
Bang!
With wings flapping, it leaped into the air.
The fledgling dragon tumbled and fell to the ground with a thud after only half a foot of air. After several attempts, it still could not fly. The information of its bloodline inheritance surfaced in its mind—the fledgling dragon needs to go through a certain amount of practice to master the ability to fly, and it can only fly short distances and is not very agile.
It then looked at the bright red rock face and tried to climb it. The rock face sloped upwards, extending to the top of the crater, a height of several hundred meters.
Before long, it wobbled and fell down. The young dragon's stamina was not enough to support a long period of inward climbing.
An investigation of the area surrounding the lava lake revealed no cave entrances or passages leading outside.
"We can't even get out of this crater in a short time, let alone cross the fog zone?"
Zhang Xun realized that the plan to send the Red Dragon to Dongluo Town was unreliable and had to be abandoned. The Red Dragon was not strong now, so there was no need to take the risk. Upon closer examination, it hadn't reached the point where it was worth taking the risk. It was best to think of another way.
What other options are there?
Zhang Xun flipped through the information in his mind about bloodline inheritance.
His mind was completely different. One side showed a blurry scene of a volcano crater with the outline of a red dragon hatchling; the other side showed a scene of Dongluo Town with the outline of a humanoid figure.
These are his two separate consciousnesses, like the left and right hemispheres of the brain, distinct yet unified, primarily controlling the human body and the red dragon body respectively.
"Red Dragon, a legendary creature, possesses powerful innate abilities, including innate intelligence, which in turn includes..." Zhang Xun looked at his two separate consciousnesses, a thought suddenly occurred to him, and he began to ponder it carefully.
"The initial idea was that the Red Dragon would assist humans in acquiring resources and making progress in martial arts training... But what if all the intermediate processes were omitted?"
"Give it a try!!!"
The fledgling dragon thought it over and over again and found it feasible. It lay down again, curled up its tail, rolled its body into a ball, and closed its eyes.
Swish.
Open your eyes again.
Inside the Zhang family's house in Dongluo Town.
Zhang Xun's vision was completely dark. He quietly rolled over and got out of bed, listening to his mother's steady breathing, and tried to move around the room quietly.
After a long while, accompanied by a crisp sound like bamboo breaking and a long exhale, a few words rang out joyfully in the darkness.
"Excellent! That works! You can start training at the boxing academy now!"
