Chapter 33 "Ebb Tide"

"call."

After confirming that he was out of danger, Li Xin breathed a sigh of relief.

Then he looked at the crouching tiger cannons on the deck. This battle had unexpectedly made him discover the power and ingenious use of these cannons when firing in unison.

The rest of the journey was peaceful, and the Starfire soon arrived at the town where the brother and sister lived.

It was a small town with only a few hundred inhabitants. Most of the houses were made of wood and sheet metal, with rows of rivets nailed to the walls and rusty corrugated iron roofs. Between the houses were brass pipes of various sizes, from which steam would occasionally rise.

There is a small dock on the edge of the town. Its ground is covered with non-slip sheet metal, and wooden stakes of different sizes with ropes wrapped around them are erected along the edge. There are also many vehicles parked there.

There were long, narrow speedboats with their engines covered by copper hulls; there were flying machines with folded wings and covered by canvas; and there were huge steamships with all sorts of equipment on their decks.

Blacksmith shops, tailor shops, guild halls, taverns, town halls, chambers of commerce... all sorts of shops dotted the town. Townspeople moved about among them, some wearing leather jackets or wool coats, hoods or goggles. Others wore coarse cloth shirts and vests, sleeves rolled up to their forearms. Still others wore work clothes, with wrenches, pliers, or measuring tapes tucked into their belts, their tools clanging as they walked.

It was nearly noon, and the whole town was bustling with activity. Miners carried their tools to the dock, hunters were preparing fishing nets and harpoons, craftsmen were adjusting the engines of their aircraft, people were coming and going on the streets, and the shops were filled with the clanging and clattering of metal—everyone was busy with their own tasks.

Li Xin was somewhat engrossed in watching, and he could roughly imagine the lives of the people in the town—on weekdays, they would drive various vehicles to explore this vast world, traveling with the wind and accompanied by the clouds. At night, they would return to the town, drinking and chatting with their neighbors in the tavern about the day's harvest and old news.

"Hey, you're home now." He waved to the brother and sister.

Matthew's lips moved, as if he wanted to say something but hesitated. Amy, on the other hand, spoke softly.

"That's not our home, it's just our workplace."

"Huh?" Li Xin was taken aback.

"Our hometown is in a very, very far place, and our parents passed away a long time ago," Amy said softly. "And in order to accumulate more work points, my brother and I accepted federal labor dispatch at a very young age and were sent here."

As she spoke, a smile returned to the girl's face.

"However, my uncle's family and my little cousin who loves to cry still live in my hometown. Well... he has grown quite a bit taller by now, and we are all looking forward to the day we can reunite."

Li Xin nodded slightly and didn't say anything more.

According to the siblings, the town is called "Rustwind." Most of the townspeople, like them, were sent there by the federal government as labor dispatch workers, and their jobs mainly consist of mining, hunting aerial creatures, and clearing land.

It was just a small camp with only a few people, but over time it developed into a town.

Li Xinyan stroked his chin. In fact, he was also very curious about the territorial division of this federation. After all, this was airspace, unlike the land with its mountains, rivers, and boundaries. He wondered how they divided the land for transportation and administration.

With only a short distance left to travel to Rustwind Town, he faced a dilemma. Although he had made up his mind to communicate with the town, he dared not enter rashly, fearing something unexpected might happen.

Just then, he suddenly caught sight of something parked on the edge of town.

It was a mobile city built by humans.

.......

"Don't worry, although we don't speak the language, the people here are very warm and friendly!"

The burly man with a crew cut, wearing a white vest, burst into laughter.

His name is Zhang Yue, and he is the lord of this mobile city called "Iron Mole".

The Iron Mole's appearance is quite different from that of ordinary mobile cities. Its exterior has a thick alloy shell, making it resemble a giant steel whale. The deck is also equipped with giant chainsaw blades, hydraulic hammers, and steam crossbows.

These types of mobile cities are often referred to as "defensive cities" because they are characterized by their robust defenses and powerful engines.

Compared to the previously impoverished Spark, the Iron Mole is significantly better equipped. This mobile city not only boasts a full range of sophisticated facilities and a fleet of vehicles, but also houses a considerable number of chickens, ducks, pigs, cattle, and sheep.

According to Zhang Yue, the Iron Mole appeared on the edge of this town when it first arrived in this world. Both sides were quite startled at the time, but after careful communication, the townspeople of Rustwind Town kindly welcomed them.

"Is that so?" Li Xin nodded.

It seems that there are not always clashes, conflicts, and contradictions between civilizations; there can also be friendship and exchanges.

With Zhang Yue's introduction, the Xinghuo successfully entered Xiufeng Town.

During his visit to the Starfire, the lord was quite envious of the Flesh Butcher machine gun and Tiger Crouching cannon on its deck. Seeing this, Li Xin took the opportunity to propose a trade.

He traded a batch of flesh-and-blood machine guns and tiger-squatting cannons for a flock of young chickens, ducks, pigs, cattle, and sheep. After acquiring them, he instructed Lu Chen to make room and arrange for people to carefully raise them.

As long as these livestock are raised gradually, we can obtain a steady supply of meat and eggs, and the dining table on the Xinghuo ship will become much more abundant.

Not only that, he also casually made a few translators in the production workshop and gave them to the other party.

After trying it out and finding that communication was indeed possible, Zhang Yue's eyes widened in surprise.

"Why is yours so much better? Damn it, my translator can only translate a bunch of nonsensical gibberish at best."

Li Xin smiled but didn't say anything more.

"What are your plans next?" he asked.

Upon hearing this, Zhang Yue immediately became interested.

"I must say, you've come at just the right time." He reached out and patted Li Xin on the shoulder.

......

The black fog did not rise continuously.

On very rare occasions, it will exhibit a rare sign: "ebb tide".

"The people of Rustwind Town say this will be a once-in-a-century massive ebb tide, and it's happening in the next few days," Zhang Yue said. "The drop in the black fog will be extremely dramatic."

Li Xin's eyes lit up as he listened; so this was what Matthew meant by "exploring the Black Mist." He was also curious about what lay beneath the black mist.

Furthermore, the aerial travelers' dives during low tide weren't solely for exploration. Beneath the black fog lay countless resources, even gold and silver treasures. For them, this wasn't just an opportunity, but a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make a fortune.

These words further piqued Li Xin's curiosity.

"In that case, we need to be prepared," he said.
