Chapter 21 Crossfire
late at night.
"Are you ready?" Li Xin asked in a low voice.
Everyone nodded. They were now in their positions on the deck, and the Starfire was refueled and ready to be ignited.
Uneasy, anxious, extremely nervous... almost everyone's expression was exactly the same, and even he himself had little confidence.
Looking up at the sky, I saw a dim, dark moon—this pitch-black night, ironically, gave me a sense of security.
He took a deep breath and waved.
"Let's go."
The Starfire started up and slowly sailed into the battlefield. To avoid attracting attention, it deliberately slowed down, turned off most of the lights on the deck, and turned the searchlights to their lowest brightness.
Li Xin stood on the watchtower, intently surveying his surroundings.
The entire battlefield was quiet at this moment, and the positions on both sides were also silent, with only a few beams of searchlight slowly sweeping across the night.
As the Starfire continued its journey, he also gained a clear view of the battlefield.
Scattered shell casings, tangled and crooked subway wire mesh, abandoned guns, and uncollected corpses... but most of all, there were countless shell craters, some so large they could almost fit the entire Starfire ship inside.
This mobile city then cautiously traversed the battlefield, with no one on deck daring to relax.
Before we had gone very far, something suddenly moved on our left.
"There!" someone whispered.
Everyone turned their guns around in unison, and the beams of searchlights quickly swept over them!
However, it was just a tattered military overcoat hanging on the barbed wire, fluttering in the wind. As for its owner, a giant soldier, he lay a few steps away, face down, his lower body gone.
Li Xin breathed a sigh of relief and waved goodbye.
"keep going."
A short while later, another unexpected situation occurred.
The Spark cruiser churned over a pile of spent shell casings, producing a series of rattling sounds that were particularly jarring in the quiet night. Almost simultaneously, searchlights from both sides shone in!
Two beams of light swept past the Starfire at a distance of less than ten meters, like two giant eyes searching in the darkness.
Everyone froze instantly, some even instinctively holding their breath.
Fortunately, the two beams of light quickly moved away after sweeping around.
Overall, the journey was relatively uneventful. As time went on, they had covered about half of the battlefield.
As I left, my tense mood gradually relaxed, and my hands, which had been gripping the railing tightly, unconsciously loosened.
At this rate, I should be able to pass through safely in no time.
Just then, a sharp whistling sound came from overhead.
He instinctively looked up and saw a flare burst open in the sky above, its blinding light briefly illuminating the entire battlefield.
It was precisely because of this that Li Xin was able to truly see the scene on the battlefield at this moment.
On both sides of the battlefield, countless giant soldiers were crawling forward with guns in hand. The dark mass of people, like the rising tide, silently swept over the shell craters and barbed wire.
A wave of shock and absurdity washed over him – it turned out that both sides in the conflict had coincidentally chosen to launch a surprise attack tonight!
Not only him, but everyone had a look of utter disbelief on their faces.
Without thinking twice, Li Xin suddenly waved his hand.
"Hurry up!"
Before he finished speaking, flares burst into the sky one after another, illuminating the entire battlefield as bright as day.
The giant soldiers on both sides of the position also saw each other at the same time. Both sides were stunned for a moment, then picked up their guns, stood up and leaped out of the shell craters, trenches and behind the barbed wire, and launched a charge with a roar.
In an instant, the once tranquil battlefield was filled with billowing smoke and flying bullets. Heavy machine guns in the bunkers roared into action, their crimson ammunition belts flashing like fiery serpents in the darkness. Shells whistled down, exploding into fireballs on the ground and kicking up clouds of dust.
"Damn it! Damn it, damn it, damn it!" Li Xin cursed angrily.
He could curse every curse word he wanted to use in his mind, and he even wished he could punch each of the giant generals on both sides of the battle.
At this moment, the Starfire was caught in the middle of the two sides, surrounded by a hail of bullets. The city's newly restored skeletal coating was shattered at the very beginning.
On the battlefield amidst the flying bullets, giant soldiers surged across trenches and bunkers, crashing into each other like a tidal wave.
Some of the giant soldiers ran and fired their guns, their lips trembling as they desperately roared, seemingly trying to vent their fear. Their faces were covered in mud and sweat, making it impossible to tell whether it was mud or sweat.
Some giant soldiers, upon landing in close combat, would simply throw down their guns, grab entrenching tools or bayonets, and charge at the enemy. Others, whose weapons would slip from their hands during grappling, would simply pounce on their opponents bare-handed, pinning them down and wrestling fiercely on the ground.
Some giant soldiers, who had been charging with a roar, were swept down by a burst of bullets in the next second. He lay in the mud, his body still struggling desperately, blood gurgling from his throat, his mouth opening and closing as if trying to say something, but soon he stopped moving.
With a roar, the Starfire began to accelerate. The mobile city began to sway and drift left and right on the battlefield, desperately dodging the hail of bullets.
On the deck, everyone opened fire on the giant soldiers with all their might, their roars louder than the gunfire.
Li Xin was also firing, maneuvering the Flesh Butcher machine gun and swiftly taking down one giant soldier after another nearby. At this moment, bullets flew in all directions, creating huge craters in the city's armored vehicles, and the buildings hit by them exploded like paper.
"Don't stop, keep going!" he yelled.
Not far ahead, a squad of giant soldiers was attempting to take out a machine gun emplacement. The leader appeared to be a captain, a middle-aged giant in his forties or fifties, his face etched with deep wrinkles and his temples graying. The giant soldiers following behind him were much younger; some had no stubble on their lips, some had freckles all over their faces, and some wore glasses and looked flustered, appearing like students just brought into battle.
After waving for his men to provide cover fire, the Giant Captain seized the opportunity to rush out from the flank, pulling the pin on his grenade as he ran, ready to throw it.
He hadn't run more than a few steps when he was swept down by a barrage of bullets. A grenade exploded in his hand, and flames engulfed most of his body.
Upon witnessing this scene, his giant soldiers froze. Some were the first to recover and let out a roar, whether it was a curse or a cry, it was unclear. Then, someone let out a loud shout, and everyone suddenly rushed out of their cover, charging madly toward the machine gun position.
The machine gun fire continued.
The heavy machine gun spat fire, the ammunition belts rattled as they were fed into the chamber, relentlessly unleashing a hail of bullets that swept them down.
Blood blossomed on the young soldiers' bodies as they fell one after another, collapsing alongside their captain.
On the other side, the giant machine gunner who had fired reloaded his ammunition, chuckled and cursed as he lit a cigarette.
Just as he was about to light the fire, he inadvertently caught sight of the Starfire, which was firing and breaking through the enemy lines not far away. The giant froze instantly, his mouth agape, his face showing utter astonishment, almost as if he had seen a ghost. He probably couldn't understand why such a thing had appeared on the battlefield.
After a few seconds of stunned silence, he suddenly came to his senses, grabbed the heavy machine gun, turned the muzzle, and roared as he pulled the trigger.
Faced with the whistling barrage of bullets sweeping across the ship, the Starfire drifted to the side, its body swerving sharply to the side, narrowly missing the edge of the barrage. The violent shaking caused people on the deck to stagger and fall to the ground.
Li Xin gripped the railing tightly with one hand, pointed at the roaring heavy machine gun in the distance with the other, and roared through gritted teeth.
"Make this thing shut up!"
The Tiger Crouching Cannon roared in response, and the invisible air shell, carrying a heavy weight, crashed down, instantly blasting the giant backward and shattering the entire heavy machine gun.
A wave of unrest, a wave of up again.
Suddenly, a deafening roar erupted from the right, and a large group of giant soldiers overcame their cover and launched a simultaneous charge.
What the Spark served them was a newly built and upgraded urban machine gun.
Six enormous gun barrels simultaneously spat out tongues of fire, exploding into a burst of intense white light in the darkness. Bullets rained down in swarms, and before the giant soldiers could even react, they were as if swept by an invisible giant scythe, blasted one after another into a gruesome blood mist and bits of flesh.
A barrage of bullets swept across the battlefield, and more than half of the charging giant soldiers were gone. The surviving soldiers stared at their severed limbs, their eyes widening in disbelief before letting out heart-wrenching screams of terror.
"Okay!" Li Xin clenched his fist tightly.
This thing is incredibly powerful! He's finally got his revenge.
But when he turned his head, he noticed something, his expression changed instantly, and he immediately roared without regard for anything else.
"Prepare to maneuver and evade!"
Behind the battlefield positions were the artillery positions of both sides.
Inside the position, hundreds of large-caliber battlefield artillery pieces were lined up in a row, each about the size of the Xinghuo gun. Their barrels were raised, and their dark muzzles were all pointed at the battlefield.
Loading shells, inserting the ramrod, pulling the fuse, squinting to measure the distance... the giant artillerymen completed a series of actions in a tense but rapid manner, then covered their ears and pulled the breechblock.
Hundreds of cannons opened fire simultaneously, causing the entire position to tremble.
The shells instantly engulfed the giant soldiers who were engaged in battle. Some were blown to pieces, some had their limbs severed and rolled around in the shell craters screaming in agony, and some, unable to escape, curled up in nearby shell craters, their bodies trembling like leaves.
Black and red fireballs exploded from the ground, hurling dirt, gravel, smoke, and the severed limbs and remains of giant soldiers into the sky before falling back down.
The Starfire accelerated at full speed, maneuvering and drifting across the battlefield. All around it, shells rained down, fireballs exploded, and shockwaves swept across the deck like a storm, carrying dirt and debris.
Li Xin felt that she had probably never been this nervous in her life.
His hands gripped the railing tightly, his knuckles were white and bloodless, his nails dug into the rust, causing him excruciating pain, but he was completely unaware of it.
After all, given the size of the cannon, a single shell would be enough to render the Starfire unusable.
"Hold on...you have to hold on!" he murmured in prayer, his voice so low that even he could barely hear it.
To his disbelief, the Starfire miraculously survived this hellish barrage of fire.
As they watched the flames and explosions fall far behind them, everyone's eyes widened in disbelief. They had actually managed to break through!
But the next second, the entire mobile city suddenly sank and then slid uncontrollably downwards—it turned out that the helmsman had accidentally driven it into a trench.
The giants were already enormous, and the trenches they built were so exaggerated they resembled canyons, with giant soldiers everywhere nearby.
"My lord, I..." The helmsman's voice came through the microphone, filled with panic, extreme guilt, and even a hint of tears.
"Don't panic, you did a fantastic job!" Li Xin shouted. "Now keep pushing forward, we're going to fight our way out!"
This was a very wide trench, branching off at intervals, with command posts, ammunition depots, and artillery shelters built along it, and kerosene lamps hanging every few steps.
A makeshift cooking pot, ammunition boxes, bayonet holders, supply boxes... and various other miscellaneous items were scattered in the ditch.
The Starfire sped through the trench, the scenery on both sides flashing by like a revolving lantern.
Inside a machine gun bunker, a giant machine gunner who looked like a veteran was frantically pulling the trigger, while his comrade next to him was frantically loading bullets onto the ammunition belt, his fingers trembling violently.
Further ahead, a giant who looked like an officer was grabbing a giant recruit by the collar, yelling and pointing him forward to charge. But the recruit was terrified by the battlefield's artillery fire, his legs were as weak as noodles, and he couldn't even stand up.
The group unleashed their full firepower, shooting down every giant they encountered along the way.
As they passed a corner, they saw a giant wounded soldier sitting on an ammunition box. His left leg was missing below the knee, his right arm was also missing, and his eyes were dull and lifeless.
At that moment, he was slowly setting up a rifle with his remaining hand and foot, aiming the muzzle at his chin.
Upon seeing the approaching Starfire, the giant paused for a moment, then shrugged dismissively and pulled the trigger.
After breaking through the trenches, it was unclear how much time had passed before the Starfire finally crossed the battlefield.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, staring blankly at the receding smoke behind them, hardly believing they were still alive.
Li Xin also put down the flesh-and-blood butcher machine gun in his hand, and his tense nerves finally relaxed.
We finally fought our way out.
