Full-Time Magister: Rebirth of Mo Fan as the Primordial Evil Phoenix

Chapter 19 Cannon Fodder Testing the Waters? The Tug-of-War Between Darkness and Light!

"…Hold"

Mo Fan looked down at the little mudfish pendant on his chest, his brows slowly furrowing.

A very faint dark red line appeared on the pendant at some point, so fine it looked like a bloodstain, lying on the surface and almost invisible unless you looked closely.

But even with just this little bit of color, it's still unpleasant to look at.

He raised his hand and pressed it against his chest.

"Damn it... Is it that bloodlust, or is your broken pendant acting up again?"

Mo Fan muttered a curse under his breath.

The fire was still crackling, and most of the students were huddled in their sleeping bags, while the occasional sound of patrolling military mages could be heard from the outside.

But Mo Fan didn't feel relaxed at all.

Now that the group in the woods has shown up and even specified "keep an eye on him," this matter is far from over. The Black Vatican's forte has never been direct confrontation, but rather refusing to budge once they've set their sights on someone.

Mo Fan didn't go back to the tent. Instead, he hugged his knees and leaned against the fire, his head slightly lowered, pretending to be dozing off, but his ears were always perked up.

A breeze swept past the edge of the camp, causing the tattered tents to sway gently.

About half an hour later, the campsite became even quieter. The sound of Xue Musheng pacing back and forth had stopped, and Zhang Xiaohou, wrapped in his sleeping bag, remained motionless.

Just then, I suddenly felt a warmth in my chest.

It's very light.

Mo Fan's eyelids lifted abruptly.

He didn't turn his head immediately, but only glanced at the edge of the camp out of the corner of his eye.

There was someone over there, someone I didn't know had appeared yet.

The man in the grey robe stood perfectly positioned in the shadow cast by a half-collapsed tent—out of the reach of the fire, and easily missed by the patrolling men.

Mo Fan cursed inwardly, but outwardly acted as if he hadn't seen anything, reached for the kettle, and slowly took a sip.

The man didn't rush to get closer; he just stood there watching him.

After a moment, the man in the gray robe stepped forward.

The footsteps were very light, making almost no sound on the ground.

Once the others entered the firelight, Mo Fan was able to see their faces clearly.

He was in his thirties, his face was sickly pale, his eyes were deep-set, he was thin, and his appearance was ordinary. But his eyes were cold and wet, like a snake poking its head out of a ditch, and one look at them was enough to make you feel disgusted.

"You're Mo Fan?"

The voice was soft and even.

Mo Fan screwed on the kettle, too lazy to even lift his eyelids.

"Who are you?"

"Someone I want to talk to."

Mo Fan chuckled: "Stop talking about your mother. Dressed like that in the middle of the night, are you going to a funeral?"

The man in gray wasn't angry; he just smiled.

"He has quite a temper."

"Try being watched by someone in the middle of the night." Mo Fan put down the kettle. "Spit it out."

The man in gray stopped two steps away, his gaze lingering on the man's chest before he said, "I heard about what happened in the woods earlier. You're quite bold, daring to chase after him."

Mo Fan twitched the corner of his mouth.

"What, are you here to give me an award certificate?"

The man in gray ignored the question and just stared at him.

"It's really not easy for a student to witness such a scene and come back alive."

"I'm tough."

"Just tough luck?"

The firelight flickered twice, and the gray-clad man's face also lit up and down.

"I've heard that you... have something else about you."

Mo Fan didn't speak, but he tapped his knee lightly with his fingers.

The other party only mentioned the matter in the woods casually; this was what they really wanted to ask.

Mo Fan leaned back, a slightly roguish smile on his face.

"Your Black Vatican has switched to fortune-telling now? Everyone says they have something on them. What, trying to recruit me?"

Upon hearing this, the smile on the other person's face froze for a moment.

"It seems you know more than I thought."

"Same to you." Mo Fan looked up at him. "You were talking so loudly in the woods because you thought no one could hear you, right? Too bad, my hearing is still good."

"So what did you hear?"

"you guess."

"I don't like guessing."

"Then stop guessing." Mo Fan raised his chin. "Tell me yourself. See if it's the same thing I heard."

The man in gray fell silent.

Mo Fan felt even more at ease.

The other party is probing his situation.

The man in gray suddenly laughed again.

"You are very smart."

"Intelligent people usually die young."

Mo Fan also laughed, but there was little warmth in his laughter.

"That's still better than you bunch of gutter rats living like human beings."

The smile on the gray-clad man's face vanished completely.

"Who did you tell the news to?"

Mo Fan's heart skipped a beat, but he maintained his nonchalant demeanor.

"I'm a tight-lipped person."

"Is that so?"

"Of course." Mo Fan stared at him. "Especially things related to the dead."

A sharp glint flashed in the gray-clad man's eyes, and he flicked his sleeve.

A dark, cold light shot out from the ground, as fast as a venomous snake, heading straight for Mo Fan's abdomen!

Mo Fan had anticipated this move, and with a quick twist of his foot, he stepped aside!

With a "hiss".

The poisoned needle grazed the hem of her clothes and pierced the ground, its tip still trembling. The small patch of soil around it had already turned black.

That's fucking shady.

Mo Fan's curse had barely faded when a burst of fire erupted from his palm!

"Fire burns - bones scorch!"

boom!

A dark red flame suddenly erupted, illuminating half of the camp.

This fire was fiercer than usual, and the air itself seemed to tremble from the heat.

The gray-clad man's expression finally changed, and he raised his hand to defend himself.

The pale blue light had just risen when it was violently shaken by the impact of the flames.

"Smash it for me!"

Mo Fan pressed his palm forward.

click!

The defense shattered like brittle glass, and the next second, flames engulfed half of the gray-clad man's body.

"what!"

The gray-clad man staggered backward, frantically trying to pat the flames off his body, but the fire was malevolent, growing stronger with each pat, and a large patch of his gray robe was charred in the blink of an eye.

Mo Fan didn't give him a chance to breathe, and the second star trail instantly took shape.

"Be a good person in your next life! Don't be a dog of the Black Vatican again!"

Sizzle!

The man took the blow head-on, flying through the air and smashing through half of the wooden stake.

This noise finally woke everyone in the camp.

"Who?!"

"What's going on over there?!"

"Enemy attack?!"

The students stirred into a commotion, and several military mages rushed towards them.

Mo Fan, however, only stared at the person on the ground.

The man in gray lay on the ground, half of his face burned and distorted, coughing up blood, and still trying to raise his hand.

Mo Fan took two steps forward and stepped on his wrist.

Click!

The sound of bones breaking is enough to make your teeth ache.

"what!"

The man in gray was in so much pain that his eyes almost bulged out, staring intently at Mo Fan.

"You... are not an ordinary student..."

"Nonsense." Mo Fan stepped on his hand, his voice cold. "Would your Black Vatican dare to sneak over in the middle of the night to silence an ordinary student?"

The man in gray coughed up blood twice, and then a hideous smile suddenly appeared on his lips.

"So... you really knew."

"I know a little, not much, but enough to fleece you."

The man in gray was panting.

"Even if I die tonight... someone will send the message out... you can't escape..."

"Threatening me?"

"You think... I'm the only one?"

Mo Fan's pupils contracted slightly, and he subconsciously glanced at the surrounding darkness.

In that instant, the gray-clad man suddenly reached into his robes with his other hand!

Mo Fan's expression changed.

"court death!"

The flames in his palm crashed down!

A ball of evil fire swallowed the person whole; the scream only lasted half a note before it was completely extinguished.

Once the fire subsided, only a pool of charred ash remained on the ground.

The surroundings were quiet for a moment.

Immediately afterwards, footsteps drew closer.

The first to rush over were two military mages, their boots kicking up mud. Zhan Kong, on the other hand, moved at a leisurely pace, as if he knew from afar that it was already over. Xue Musheng was the most disheveled, his coat on backwards; when he saw the pile of charred ash on the ground, his face turned pale.

"W-What's going on?!"

Mo Fan shook the sparks off his hand, ignored his words, and looked up at a shadow not far away.

"Chief Instructor, Teacher Tang Yue."

"At this point, what are you still hiding?"

Xue Musheng was stunned on the spot.

"Is Teacher Tang...Tang Yue here too?"

As soon as the words were spoken, a tall figure emerged from behind the abandoned tent.

With her long, black hair flowing down her shoulders and a slender figure, she was dressed in casual, neat clothes for the night, less flamboyant than usual, and a bit cold. It was Tang Yue.

On the other side, Zhan Kong also approached with his hands in his pockets, glanced down at the pool of charred ash on the ground, and then looked up at Mo Fan.

"You little brat, you've really gone all out."

Mo Fan twitched the corner of his mouth.

"I'm not ruthless. The person lying here right now is me."

The military mages clearly sensed something was wrong and tactfully stepped back. Xue Musheng stood to the side, his face full of questions, but he didn't dare to utter a single word.

Tang Yue walked to the edge of the charred ashes and looked down at them twice.

"The grey-robed priest."

"Hmm." Zhan Kong nodded. "That line that we deliberately put in before."

Xue Musheng's scalp tingled from hearing this.

"So, they let it in on purpose?!"

Tang Yue didn't even look up: "Teacher Xue, it's better if you don't know about this."

Xue Musheng opened his mouth, but in the end, he swallowed his words back.

Mo Fan wasn't surprised.

If the Black Vatican really wanted to silence him, they wouldn't have sent over someone like this to test him slowly.

Zhan Kong looked at Mo Fan and asked directly, "When did you discover it?"

"When I saw him," Mo Fan said, "he arrived too slowly, talked too much nonsense, and didn't seem like he was really there to kill someone; it seemed like he was just gathering information."

Tang Yue glanced at him.

"Tell me, what did you hear in the woods?"

Mo Fan didn't beat around the bush anymore.

"It was just a few words, I didn't hear everything, but there were a few key points." He counted on his fingers, "They had tampered with things in a few places beforehand. The wolf pack raid on the camp wasn't the main event; they were also waiting for the city to make their move together."

Upon hearing this, Zhan Kong's expression darkened.

Tang Yue also frowned.

Being targeted at the camp and something happening in the city are two different things.

"And another thing," Mo Fan paused, "they mentioned me."

Zhan Kong raised his eyes: "What did you say?"

"They said I smelled off." Mo Fan smirked. "The last one in the hoodie even said before he left, 'Keep an eye on me.'"

This time, Tang Yue's gaze towards him was clearly different.

She saw it clearly in the woods tonight; when Mo Fan made his move, something was definitely off.

Zhan Kong stared at Mo Fan for a while, then suddenly asked, "How much do you know yourself?"

Mo Fan's heart tightened, but his face remained as nonchalant as ever.

"If I really knew, would I be standing here telling you this?"

"Stop talking nonsense," Zhan Kong said.

"I'm not kidding," Mo Fan said, shrugging. "I only know that this thing can get me into the zone, and it also gets me aroused. I'm touching other things too."

Zhan Kong stared at him for a few seconds, then didn't press him any further.

Tang Yue, however, continued to look at him.

Zhan Kong turned his head to her and said, "The line is broken, but at least we can be sure that the Black Vatican isn't after these students tonight."

"He's already being watched."

"I can tell," Tang Yue said.

Mo Fan's lips twitched upon hearing this.

"You two saying this to my face, aren't you treating me like I'm not even human?"

Zhan Kong glanced at him.

"You're like a piece of roasted meat now; everyone who sees you wants to take a bite."

"..."

Mo Fan was momentarily speechless.

Tang Yue smiled, then quickly put her hand back.

"Don't run around anymore," she said. "Just because one person died tonight doesn't mean there won't be a second or a third. The Black Vatican won't let up easily now that they've tried once."

Mo Fan touched his nose.

"That sounds like you're giving me face."

"You can interpret it that way if you want," Zhan Kong said lazily. "Anyway, if you're really surrounded, don't cry and beg the instructor for help."

Mo Fan rolled his eyes and remained silent.

But he knew in his heart that this was not a bluff.

Mo Fan lowered his head and touched the little mudfish pendant on his chest again.

The dark red bloodstain lay quietly on it, as if it were asleep.

Zhan Kong waved his hand.

"Alright, add two more layers of guards to the outer perimeter. All students must remain under surveillance tonight. The training ends tomorrow."

Several military mages immediately responded.

Xue Musheng finally came to his senses and nodded hurriedly, his forehead covered in sweat.

Mo Fan remained standing in place, glancing at the woods outside the camp.

A night breeze blew out from inside, causing the leaves to sway gently.

It was as black as a deep pit.

"What's wrong?" Tang Yue followed his gaze.

Mo Fan withdrew his gaze, remained silent for two seconds, and then suddenly let out a dry laugh.

"It's nothing."

"I just feel like we've really messed with something dirty this time."
