Everyone has awakened, but I am the only mortal!

Chapter 3: The First Signs of the Emergence of Various Forces

Su Bai held his breath.

He counted again: "1, 2, 3....19."

Including him, there are nineteen people.

There is indeed one missing.

He didn't sleep last night, and everyone gathered together to rest. No one even got up to use the restroom, but someone just vanished into thin air.

They disappeared without a trace.

Holy crap.

Su Bai couldn't help but curse under his breath. What on earth was going on?

Although completely baffled, Su Bai was certain that this was not man-made.

A soft rustling sound came from nearby; someone had woken up.

Su Bai closed his eyes and pretended to sleep, when he heard a low growl and a muttered voice beside him: "Another person is lost, another person is lost."

The man's panicked voice woke everyone up, and Su Bai also opened his eyes again, pretending to have just woken up, but his gaze swept over everyone without making a sound, observing everyone's reaction.

Aside from the indifference of the father and son and the hunched old man, there were two other men in the crowd who were also quietly stretching and did not join Ma Jun and the others in their discussion.

Ma Jun's brows furrowed tightly. The people around him asked him in panic what to do, but he ignored them. Instead, he counted again to make sure that one person was indeed missing. Then, he gritted his teeth, cursed, and said impatiently, "Alright, pack up and hurry up."

As he set off, Ma Jun didn't forget to glance at Su Bai and Lao Zhou.

After Ma Jun turned his head, Lao Zhou said, "Your suspicion has now been cleared."

Su Bai said, "..." Is that the point?

Throughout the day, the team was shrouded in panic.

Looking out at the endless ruins and yellow sand, Su Bai would occasionally feel lost.

There is no end in sight, no future in sight.

Night fell again.

Ma Jun went straight to Su Bai and asked bluntly, "Who do you think it is?"

Old Zhou said, "Monster."

Ma Jun ignored Lao Zhou and only glared at Su Bai.

After a moment's hesitation, Su Bai said, "Not human."

Ma Jun: "..."

Perhaps it was because Su Bai spoke so earnestly, and her eyes were so sincere, that Ma Jun gritted his teeth and twisted his features to suppress his anger: "Then what do we do?"

Su Bai said, "I don't know."

Ma Jun roared in fury: "You two are playing me?"

Su Bai calmly said, "I don't even know what it is, let alone how it can make people disappear."

Ma Jun asked, "Then how did you know it was a monster?"

Su Bai said, "I didn't say it was a monster."

Ma Jun sneered: "You just said 'not human'."

Su Bai said, "Yes, I said it wasn't human, but I didn't say it was a monster. To make a person disappear silently, without a drop of blood or a sound, is something a human can't do, so I don't know exactly what it is."

It was perfectly reasonable, yet Ma Jun had no reason to lose his temper.

But he was unwilling to leave just like that.

Su Bai changed the subject: "However, I woke up last night and faintly heard what sounded like a baby crying. Or maybe I was just imagining things, or it was just the sound of the wind."

Ma Jun's body stiffened abruptly.

He appears strong, but is unusually sensitive.

As soon as Su Bai finished speaking, he immediately turned around and his gaze landed precisely on the hunched old man.

After that, Ma Jun said nothing and turned to leave.

Old Zhou gazed at his strong back, his voice drifting over: "Do monsters all like to eat lean meat? Looking at how meaty he is, it must smell pretty good."

Su Bai glanced at him indifferently: "Aren't you afraid that you might be the one who disappears tonight?"

Old Zhou said calmly, "I'm ugly, monsters wouldn't want me."

Su Bai: "..."

After two days, he had gotten used to Lao Zhou's peculiar way of thinking and walked into the crowd without changing his expression.

The group gathered to rest. Su Bai saw Ma Jun and the buck-toothed man whispering to each other a few steps away. He didn't know what they were talking about. The buck-toothed man kept turning around to look at the group while they were talking, but their conversation was short and they soon returned to the group.

Xiaoli was the only woman there. She was cheerful yesterday, but she didn't say a word the whole way today. She looked very depressed and walked with her head down. Even now that she's resting, she still keeps her head down, her whole face buried in shadow.

Ma Jun took good care of her, letting her sit in the middle of the crowd, with men sitting back-to-back in a circle around her.

On one side of Su Bai was the father, who was holding the boy in his arms, and on the other side was Old Zhou.

As soon as I settled in, a gruff voice came from behind me: "Old man, what are you doing squeezing in! Get out of the way!"

Su Bai didn't like joining in the fun, but Old Zhou was extremely curious. He suddenly grabbed Su Bai's arm and excitedly gestured, "Look! Look behind you!"

Su Bai turned around.

The buck-toothed man was seen shoving the hunched old man, while two men on the other side of the old man immediately reached out to stop him.

Enraged, the buck-toothed man, with his hand held down, simply raised his leg and kicked the old man hard.

The old man fell to the ground, and the thing he was tightly holding in his arms also fell to the ground.

The instant that thing hit the ground—

"Wow--!!"

A sharp, piercing cry of a baby suddenly rang out.

The sound was so shrill it was ear-piercing that everyone instinctively covered their ears and hurriedly backed away.

One of the men broke down on the spot, screaming and roaring, "How can there be a baby?! How is this possible! Even adults can't survive in the apocalypse! This can't be—it's a monster! It's a monster!"

Su Bai also stood up.

He saw it very clearly.

Upon seeing the crying package on the ground, the buck-toothed man's expression changed drastically. He immediately shook off the person blocking his way and quickly retreated to Ma Jun's side.

At this moment, Su Bai finally understood what Ma Jun and the buck-toothed man had been doing together earlier. It was clear that Ma Jun had noticed the strange things about the old man after Su Bai's reminder, and the buck-toothed man was deliberately making things difficult for the old man.

That scene just now was clearly a deliberate test.

The agitated man was still shouting and yelling about the package on the floor. Annoyed by the noise, Ma Jun shouted, "Shut up!"

The man finally fell silent, with only the baby crying on the ground. He shrank back and moved closer to Ma Jun and the others.

Ma Jun coldly stared at the two men blocking the way and asked, "Are you two in cahoots?"

The two men remained silent.

Su Bai recognized them; they were the same two people who had remained calm when he heard about the embarrassment earlier.

At this moment, one of the shorter, square-faced men chuckled, "We're all on the same path, why make things difficult for each other?"

Ma Jun sneered: "Fellow travelers support each other, not eat each other."

Before the other party could retort, the agitated man screamed again.

His expression was terrified. In the end, he opened his mouth wide and could only let out a terrified "ah ah" sound, his eyes fixed on the old man as if he had seen a ghost.

All eyes turned to that direction.

The old man's old robe was torn off, and he slowly stood up from the ground.

What a sight it was!

Naked, with a human face and horse hooves, standing upright, it has a bizarre body that is at least two meters tall.

A smile was on his face, but what came out of his mouth was a shrill, mournful cry of a baby.
