As a venomous snake, I evolved into a god through devouring.
Chapter 38 Stirs Up Trouble
The morning in Broken Blade Town was as noisy as ever.
This town was originally built for adventurers who hunt monsters, so the most common sights on the streets are adventurers in their gear, wandering around.
They would appear arm in arm at the tavern entrance, or come alone to the town's red-light district to release the mental stress brought on by days of fighting.
Because their lives were precarious and they faced constant life-or-death situations, these people were extremely generous with their money. The merchants in the town spent their days exchanging ideas and discussing how to extract money from the adventurers' pockets.
But today is an exception.
"Have you heard? Last night, the town mayor received a troop of cavalry."
"Cavalry? What are they doing here?"
"Can the soldiers sent by the noble lords do anything good here? They just returned and occupied the best villa in the city without saying a word. It's obvious they came here to plunder and seize."
The merchants' conversation attracted the attention of several adventurers, one of whom, clutching a nearly empty wine bottle, joined them in cursing the cavalry, fueled by alcohol.
"What a bunch of parasites! The thought that about 30% of the money I've earned through life-and-death struggles will have to be handed over to these bastards makes me feel sick."
"Sigh, just accept your fate. What, you're not happy about it? What can you do even if you're not happy?"
Another adventurer sighed, and for a moment, the air fell silent. But just then, a malicious laugh came from the side.
"Hehehe..."
Everyone turned their heads and saw a short, stocky man with a large beard, who let out a strange laugh.
But the laughter was really quite inappropriate.
"What are you laughing at, you dwarf? Are you looking for trouble?"
The drunken adventurer thought the other party was mocking them, so he glared at them, looking ready to fight at the slightest provocation.
"Your brain is as worthless as slag; all you know how to do is vent your anger. But I'm in a good mood because I saw something good, so I don't want to argue with you."
The dwarf's smile faded slightly after being provoked, but he still maintained a pleasant expression.
The drunken adventurer's companion—a male wanderer equipped with a broken sword—pulled back the former who was about to step forward and politely inquired of the dwarf.
"You must have heard our conversation just now, right? So, the good news you mentioned must be about the cavalry that just arrived in town?"
"That's certainly true, you clever kid."
The dwarf seemed to have his memory awakened by the wanderer's question, and the smile on his face deepened again.
"It's alright to tell you. Two members of the cavalry that came to town yesterday died in the wilderness. I happened to see them carrying their bodies back when I entered the town."
Not only that, I also heard that those two cavalrymen died from attacks by venomous snakes and wild beasts in the wild, hahahahaha…”
Upon hearing this, the adventurers and merchants in the tavern were taken aback, and then burst into laughter in unison, filling the tavern with a joyful atmosphere.
These cavalrymen were utterly useless except for showing off their power and collecting fees under various pretexts. They even suffered heavy losses in the field without any enemy attack.
Seeing them make fools of themselves is truly satisfying.
Just as the people in the tavern were laughing at the news, Finn, the leader of the cavalry, had already arrived in the courtyard.
In front of the latter lay two corpses covered with white sheets.
Finn frowned upon seeing this and immediately issued an order.
"Lift up the white cloth."
One of his men hesitated for a moment, but eventually did as he was told.
As the white cloth was removed, the gruesome deaths of the two corpses were fully revealed to everyone.
Finn immediately noticed the scar on Simon's neck.
On the other side, Jeremy's right hand was purple and ulcerated.
"As I previously reported to you, although both men had varying degrees of external injuries, the truly fatal factor was the venom injected into their bodies by the snake."
"Has a search been conducted around the area where the body was found?"
Finn looked away.
"Yes, there are torn sacks on the ground. There's no doubt Raymond escaped. And I suspect he's closely related to the deaths of Simon and Jeremy."
That's not what I was asking.
Finn turned his head, his lake-blue eyes devoid of warmth, and stared at the adjutant who was explaining the situation to him.
"Have you found any trace of that poisonous snake?"
"No...no."
The adjutant replied tremblingly.
"Search, ask, investigate, gather information about the venomous snakes from all over the place. In addition, find sorcerers and mages in the town who can use investigative magic, and take them to the place where these two people died to conduct a retrospective investigation."
After Finn finished speaking, he returned to the villa without looking back.
Only a group of soldiers remained, discussing the matter.
They hadn't expected that the deaths of the two cleanup workers would make the captain so concerned, to the point that he was willing to seek the help of a sorcerer to investigate the cause.
Suddenly, I felt more respect and admiration for this captain.
What they didn't realize was that Finn's real purpose wasn't there at all.
The latter sat down at the desk, poured himself a large glass of wine, and drank it all in one gulp.
His face, flushed from heavy drinking, revealed an undisguised excitement and anticipation.
Finn had a strong premonition that his boring life was about to undergo a change.
How much of a surprise could an ordinary venomous snake, capable of killing a fully armored soldier head-on, bring him?
……
Kasper, in the forest, was unaware of the turmoil he had caused in the town.
He is currently rubbing his body against the tree trunk to shed his skin.
Because of his extremely rapid growth rate, he sheds his skin far more frequently than ordinary snakes. Now, just over a week and a few days after his last molt, his scales can no longer support his ever-expanding body.
Simba, on the other hand, went out hunting alone.
Although he suffered some injuries in the battle with Scarface last night, in less than half a day, Little Wolf was lively and energetic again.
According to Casper's morning investigation, the wolf cub had a minor internal injury, but it did not affect its mobility at all.
This remarkable self-healing ability left Casper in awe of the powerful effect of the entry.
"At this rate, we should be able to find the wolf pack and challenge the wolf king after a while."
Kasper secretly made his own assessment.
Having someone to work for you is definitely a different experience. Simba, a single wolf, is so useful. The benefits of taming a wolf pack may far exceed Casper's expectations.
Even so, he couldn't be happy for the time being.
Because this territory does not yet entirely belong to him.
