The Bizarre Adventure of the Warhammer Guard
Chapter 90 The Strategy of Luring the Enemy
After gaining control of the orbit, the Imperial Expeditionary Fleet began orbital bombardment of the Orc palace complex on the ground in Ulanor.
Hundreds upon hundreds of blinding energy beams and physical projectiles rained down from the sky, precisely covering the vast area where the orc palace complex was located, and the violent explosions shook the entire continent.
Unfortunately, the palace complex was not destroyed as expected. It was protected by a powerful Waaagh energy field and had many missile turrets to intercept the shells.
After confirming that the orbital strike was ineffective, Kurland decided to send a ground force to launch a probing attack on the palace.
The vanguard consisted of three Space Marine chapters, three Mind Control Legions, and a large number of mortal troops, all equipped with heavy armor and artillery support.
The troops encountered far greater resistance than expected as soon as they entered the three-kilometer radius around the palace. The orcs were not only numerous, but their weapons and equipment were also significantly superior.
Even more deadly, the palace area had been modified by orcs, and was filled with traps and bunkers.
After breaking through the orcs' first line of defense, the probing force stumbled into a carefully laid trap. Orc ambushers poured out from all directions, their ferocious roars deafening.
After paying a heavy price—the destruction of half of the Mind Control Legion, the sacrifice of countless mortal troops, and the deaths of approximately three hundred Space Marines—the remaining Imperial forces were finally able to break through the encirclement and return to orbit.
The first day of the attack ended with the Empire being forced to retreat back to its orbit, but the Orcs' palace defenses remained unbroken.
The atmosphere was heavy in the tactical conference room of the United Ship, where commanders sat around the operations room reviewing the probing attack.
"The Waaagh field not only neutralized the orbital fire, but also provided a collective enhancement to the Orcs," the Mechanicus representative pointed out. "Our intelligent legions are less effective in combat within the field's range."
"Then let's find a way to reduce the Waaagh field," a commander suggested.
"Eliminating their numbers will weaken the force field," Kurland proposed. "This is a difficult war of attrition. Once the orc force field is weakened to a certain extent, we can carry out a decapitation strike."
Kurland has experienced several wars against the orcs and has extensive experience fighting them, knowing how to do things most effectively.
He glanced at the Lord of Fire Dragons sitting in the main seat. The Primarch remained silent as always, his hands clasped, sitting there quietly.
The Primarch did not offer any ideas, nor did he command the troops. He was only responsible for the final decapitation operation, and all other matters were decided by the commanders themselves.
As the discussion continued, Elpis spoke up, "I have a special set of blueprints here that can help you."
"The Waaagh energy emitter can simulate the orcs' special psionic abilities to lure the orcs out of the palace." Elpis paused for a moment, "Now all we need are the orc psionic boys."
The Waaagh Energy Emitter is the latest achievement of the Sage of Orm, who was conducting research in the Blue Star System. He received this "special product" from the StarCraft universe before Elpis went to the Cordra.
After several days of research, the Sage of Orm became quite interested in the psionic emitter within.
Under his modifications, the psionic transmitter was transformed into a transmitter capable of simulating any energy signal. As long as it was connected to the corresponding source, it could broadcast throughout the star system.
To ensure that the Waaagh energy signal would be useful to the orcs, Sage Orm personally traveled to a world invaded by the orcs, captured an orc psionic boy, and connected him to the transmitter.
As expected, the Waaagh energy emitter successfully attracted the orcs' attention. Once the horde of orcs was drawn to the emitter, having no enemies to fight, the leaderless orcs began attacking each other.
Elpis, who had just received the news, was also preparing to deploy such a transmitter on Ulano, and the others had agreed to the plan.
Among them, the representative of the Cult of Mechanics was extremely excited. He held the precious data blueprints in his hands, his mechanical arm flailing wildly behind him, and he shouted praises and prayers to the God of Machines.
Elpis didn't care if the Cult of Mechanics found out about the blueprints; after all, these fanatical members of the Cult of Mechanics wouldn't know if there were any hidden doors left by Sage Orm inside.
The plan was officially implemented, and the Tech-Priests of the Mechanicus demonstrated astonishing efficiency, producing an energy emitter in a single day.
Meanwhile, Kurland dispatched elite troops, with the assistance of psionicists from several think tanks, to successfully capture a psionic boy in other parts of Ulanno.
The transmitters were secretly deployed dozens of kilometers away from the palace, while Imperial troops lay in ambush around them, ready to eliminate the enemy at any time.
The transmitter was activated, and a strange energy fluctuation was generated, covering the entire palace. The orcs on the perimeter of the palace reacted almost immediately, abandoning their work and moving toward the transmitter in large numbers from all directions.
The plan to lure the orcs succeeded, and the Imperial forces successfully wiped out all the orcs that emerged.
But a new problem arose: the transmitter didn't always work. Sometimes it failed to attract orcs, and its effectiveness decreased over time.
Moreover, the quality of the orcs attracted became increasingly poor. At first, there were orcs wearing excellent equipment and some powerful orc warriors who were five meters tall, but later they were almost all orc lads, and their equipment became tattered.
This is not surprising; orcs are an intelligent race. Deep within the palace, there is the true orc leader, Beast, who suppresses the warlike impulses of the other orcs.
Only the lowest-ranking orc lads and farts are easily seduced by the simulated signals.
However, the launcher had already accomplished its mission; it had successfully lured out a large number of orcs, and the pale green energy shield surrounding the palace was visibly weakening.
Once again, Kurland organized a second probing attack with the same configuration, but with a different result.
This time, the attacking force clearly felt a reduction in the oppressive atmosphere from the orcs. After observing the temple deep within the orc palace and the hundreds of orc guards protecting the temple's perimeter, the attacking force temporarily withdrew.
Kurland originally planned to conduct several more sweeps to eliminate more orcs, but orc fleets from other places have been appearing one after another on the outskirts of the Ulanno star system.
Kurland realized that he had to act quickly and kill the beast, otherwise the Imperial fleet would be surrounded and unable to escape once the orc reinforcements arrived.
At the final meeting, Kurland issued the final operational orders:
"We can't delay any longer. We will gather all our strength and launch a final offensive to decapitate this beast."
"It's time to end all this," Vulcan said, raising the Doomsday Tremor. "I'll face the beasts; the rest is up to you."
The order was given, and hundreds of Thunderhawk gunboats set off from the fleet and flew toward the outskirts of the orc palace.
The assault spearhead consisted of a Primarch, a Custodian, other Chapter Commanders, and hundreds of elite warriors, followed closely by other Space Marines, mortal forces, and Mechanicus troops.
This powerful force launched a final assault on the orc palace.
