Chapter 59: The Death of the Township Head
And so, by sheer chance, Lilith became the runaway heiress of a certain family. Of course, this identity was completely precarious, and any worldly person could see right through it.
So, in order to better integrate into this world, Lilith used the excuse of "disguising her identity" to have the villagers teach her how to be a proper commoner.
This dress is definitely not suitable for me to wear. After all, the style of this outfit is completely out of place in this world, and it would easily attract attention wherever I go.
So, with the help of the women in the village, Lilith changed into a standard civilian outfit. The clothes were made of rough, single-layered fabric, making it easy to roll up her sleeves and work.
"Are these clothes even fit for a human? And you won't even give me a pair of shoes?"
In a wooden cabin, Lilith sat with her legs crossed, glaring disapprovingly at the village girls in front of her.
Upon hearing His words, none of the village girls dared to answer; instead, they all lowered their heads. Lilith followed their gaze and discovered that their feet were bare, without even a pair of shoes.
Lilith recalled for a moment and realized that it wasn't just them; almost all the villagers were barefoot. In fact, the entire village couldn't even find a single pair of straw sandals.
"Is it that shabby?"
Lilith sighed helplessly, not wanting to dwell on it too much. So be it if He's barefoot; with His constitution, He wouldn't even feel a nail if He stepped on one.
He looked at the village girls again. Now that they were dressed up, only their appearance remained. He asked:
"Now tell me, what else about me is unlike an ordinary person? Don't hide anything from me."
Upon hearing Lilith's words, the three village girls in front of her exchanged glances. They stared at Lilith, who, despite being dressed in coarse cloth, exuded an extraordinary aura. One look was enough to tell that she was no ordinary person.
Besides, Lilith's posture of rolling up her sleeves and crossing her legs was truly vulgar, especially the way she rolled up her sleeves and exposed her arms. Let alone nobles, even for common women who often had to work in the fields, this was a vulgar and lowly act.
But is this really something that can be said? Maybe Lilith has some strange fetish for doing this. Won't it cost her her head if she tells us?
Seeing the village girls' hesitant expressions, Lilith felt somewhat helpless:
"Hey, stop hiding it! I'm not some man-eating monster, can't you guys be a little bolder?"
Lilith's words were meant to put the village girls at ease, but in their eyes, Lilith was getting impatient; if they didn't speak up, they would lose their heads!
The village girls were startled and, under pressure, immediately pointed out Lilith's vulgar behavior.
Lilith was completely bewildered upon hearing this, and could only say one thing in the end:
"Feudal society was truly harmful..."
After resolving her image issue, Lilith settled down in the village, living and eating with the villagers. After a few days, Lilith could clearly sense that the villagers were very afraid of her and were extremely careful in their every move.
Despite this, the villagers still offered Lilith the best things in the village, afraid that she might suffer any injustice here. Although Lilith didn't care about these things at all, she accepted them all without hesitation.
Gradually, after half a month, the emerald green rice in the paddy field began to turn golden. As time went on, the golden rice almost covered the entire paddy field.
As the rice ripens, the villagers get busy. This year's harvest is dismal; all the rice combined isn't enough to feed the entire village until next year. And even so, half of it has to be given away for taxes.
There's nothing we can do about it. Paying taxes means we can live for a while longer; not paying taxes means either having our property confiscated or being executed.
While everyone was figuring out how to use their meager rice harvest to survive until next year, Lilith sat on the edge of the paddy field, a blade of grass between her teeth, gazing at the mountains beyond the village:
"When is that township head going to arrive? This place is no fun at all..."
With this thought in mind, Lilith sat on the edge of the field and waited and waited, until two days later, a villager carrying firewood appeared at the end of the path outside the village, his face filled with fear, saying:
"Township head, township head..."
Upon hearing the words "township head," Lilith, who had been completely unmotivated, suddenly perked up. She looked in the direction of the villager and murmured to herself:
"Has the township head finally arrived? I've been waiting for so long."
However, the villager seemed to be frightened and ran towards the village on all fours, shouting:
"The village head was eaten by a monster!"
"What?"
Lilith was taken aback, somewhat confused about the meaning of those words. When the villager approached, she stopped him and asked:
"What did you just say? What happened to the township head?"
At this point, the villager no longer cared about Lilith's identity. He struggled to escape, but found he couldn't break free from Lilith, so he had to explain:
"Not long ago, I went up the mountain to chop firewood and saw the village head and his entourage on the path. Just as I was about to greet them, a six-legged monster suddenly rushed out and bit the village head to death. I was terrified and didn't see anything else..."
Upon hearing this, Lilith felt dizzy and immediately abandoned the villagers, heading towards the path behind her.
The villagers, seeing this, were a little confused about what Lilith was going to do and anxiously asked:
Where are you going?
"Go find the township head."
As Lilith spoke, she left the village without looking back, heading towards the place the villagers had told her about where the village chief had encountered the monster.
As Lilith continued along the path, she soon caught a faint smell of blood. She rushed over and found that the group of about six people had been wiped out, their bodies lying haphazardly on the ground, torn to pieces.
The stench of blood was overwhelming, accompanied by the sound of chewing. Lilith looked over and saw a child, about four years old, lying on top of a rather obese man, eating.
"Is this a monster?"
Lilith frowned slightly, took two steps forward, and kicked the child-like monster away. After that, she ignored the monster and instead examined the injuries of the servants who had gotten up.
Among the group, this guy was the fattest. In this era, being able to eat that much fat meant he was definitely not an ordinary person; he could only be the village head.
Unfortunately, the township head had already passed away, half of his head had been bitten off, and there was a huge, bloody bite mark on his abdomen.
Seeing her hopes of reaching the big city dashed, Lilith was furious. She glared at the monster she had just kicked away and shouted:
"You bastard, prepare to face my wrath!"
And what about the monster? It had six legs on the ground, its body covered in black patterns, and four eyes staring intently at Lilith. Only when she met the child's gaze did Lilith realize that this creature was not a monster made of negative energy, but a normal being of flesh and blood.
This is an ordinary child with four arms, but it seems no one has taught him how to walk upright...
