Chapter 56: Seeing a Ghost?
About an hour passed, and Lilith had not found any signs of human habitation, nor had she even left the forest. Looking up at the sparse branches and leaves, she couldn't help but squint.
It wasn't that the sunlight was too glaring, but with such a bright sun, even though it should be summer, there were no cicadas chirping or wild animals howling in the forest. Even in broad daylight, it still felt eerie.
"Where am I? I hope I don't end up in some deserted area..."
Lilith murmured to herself and continued walking toward the sun. However, when she turned her gaze forward again, she saw a tall figure appear in the shadows in the distance.
The figure was hidden in the shade of a tree, with its back to Lilith. It was about two meters tall, slender, and dressed in a loose white robe with disheveled hair.
Lilith squinted at him. The spot where they had just been was clearly empty, so why was there suddenly a person there? Besides, this forest didn't seem like a place where people usually lived. This guy who suddenly appeared was strange in every way.
However, Lilith didn't care much. She didn't sense any threat from the guy in front of her, so she simply walked towards him.
As they approached, they said:
"Hey, do you live around here? I think I'm lost. Could you help me get out of here?"
These words went unanswered; the tall, thin figure stood motionless in the shadows, his back always to Lilith.
Lilith wondered if it was just her imagination, but the closer she got to the figure, the lower the temperature seemed to be. But it was broad daylight, so was this really normal?
Click.
With a crisp sound, Lilith accidentally broke a branch. The sound itself wouldn't have attracted attention, but the tall figure in front of her, who had always had his back to Lilith, was drawn to it and suddenly turned his head.
With a blue face and fangs, raised brow bones, and dark blue eyes, his expression was a mixture of anger and pity, and his whole being exuded a deathly, chilling aura.
Upon seeing this person's face, Lilith's vision blurred, she took a half step back, and blurted out:
"So ugly..."
However, Lilith quickly realized that her words were somewhat impolite, and she gave an apologetic look, saying:
"Sorry, I spoke too quickly... I didn't mean to. Actually, you're not ugly, just a bit unique? You probably don't mind, right?"
As she spoke, Lilith smiled and tried to get away with it by being cute.
Perhaps Lilith's apology had an effect, because the guy didn't pursue Lilith's words. He just stared at Lilith for a long while before uttering a voice that didn't sound human:
"Let's go, let's go together."
Upon hearing this, Lilith was filled with question marks:
"Let's go together? Where are you going? Are you taking me away from the forest?"
But the figure did not answer Lilith, nor did it give Lilith time to think. It started walking forward on its own. Its walking posture was strange, as if all the bones in its body had been removed. It was more like floating than "walking".
Lilith was a little confused about what this guy was up to. She guessed that "he probably knew I was lost and was leading me out of the forest." Although this guess was not solid, Lilith had no choice but to follow him in order to leave the forest.
Along the way, Lilith would occasionally strike up a conversation with the shadowy figure, but each time she asked a question, the figure would ignore her. After a few times, Lilith stopped bothering herself.
As the sun began to set behind the mountains, Lilith noticed something strange: the tall figure in front of her seemed to be deliberately avoiding the sunlight, as if afraid of being directly exposed to it.
Is he sick?
Lilith didn't pay much attention until the sun completely disappeared into the forest, when suddenly a rustling sound came from the woods.
Lilith looked in the direction of the sound and saw tall figures standing in the darkness. Some had blue faces, some had red faces, some were muscular, some were thin, some had horns on their foreheads, and some had katanas at their waists.
These guys followed Lilith as soon as they appeared, saying and doing nothing, like puppets.
Lilith couldn't sit still any longer. She rushed to the tall figure who had led the way and questioned him:
"Where are you taking me? And who are these guys?"
There was still no response. The tall figure merely glanced at her, then walked past Lilith and continued leading the way, while the other figures stood behind Lilith, urging:
"Let's go together, let's go together."
"Okay, okay, I'll leave, alright?"
Lilith was somewhat helpless, completely baffled as to why the people in this world were like this. However, having seen so many strange creatures in the previous world, she simply thought these people were a unique feature of this world and didn't think much of it.
It was around midnight. The long journey had left Lilith somewhat tired. She yawned and rubbed her eyes.
"Hey, how much longer until we get there? Aren't you tired after walking for so long?"
There was still no response, which Lilith was already used to. However, after Lilith asked the question, a shrill laugh suddenly came from the tall figures around her.
The figure leading the way stopped, turned around and looked at Lilith, revealing a set of fangs like those of a wild beast. Lilith sensed something was wrong, looked around, and realized that she had unknowingly been surrounded by a large group of tall figures.
They all stared at Lilith, their eyes like those of someone looking at prey.
"What's going on? You...aren't human?" Lilith exclaimed, only to be met with a burst of mocking laughter.
Zheng—
Taking advantage of Lilith's shock, the tall red demon behind her took two steps forward, drew his katana from his waist, and swung it down without hesitation.
Clang!
Just when all the demons thought Lilith was about to become food, the katana that was about to strike Lilith made a crisp sound and then broke into two pieces.
This scene left the ghosts somewhat bewildered, especially the blue ghost who had initially discovered Lilith, whose mind was buzzing.
When he first met Lilith, he sensed that she had no magical power and was someone he could kill easily.
However, the subtle threat emanating from Lilith kept him on his guard, and he did not attack her immediately. To be on the safe side, he chose to wander around the forest with Lilith, gather all his kind, and then deal with Lilith.
But the Blue Oni didn't expect that Lilith, who had no magical power, could withstand the attack of their strongest Red Oni without showing any external injury.
He then realized that he had messed with the wrong person...
"So you're ghosts. No wonder you look so ugly. I always thought that was a characteristic of this world."
Lilith spoke helplessly, casually crushing the last demon besides the blue demon. When she first started killing demons, she foolishly used brute force, but brute force had no effect on demons. She then realized that these demons were made of negative energy.
Negative energy naturally fears positive energy, so Lilith mobilized the positive energy within her body and attacked the ghosts again, causing them to immediately turn to ashes and dissipate.
"So, answer all my questions obediently, or I'll kill you."
Lilith clapped her hands, startling the Green Demon into abandoning his charade and nodding hastily...
