Chapter 4 Special Individuals
With special access privileges, Luke's spaceship landed silently at the edge observation point of Sector 51.
In order to completely isolate ordinary Vira residents from the Shell People and avoid interfering with this completely closed observation area, entry and exit from this area is prohibited.
But for Luke, this was clearly not a problem.
Varian followed Luke, peering through the observation window at the hellish scene around them.
Even with prior mental preparation, the impact of witnessing it firsthand still exceeded my expectations.
The legendary "ocean" has indeed vanished without a trace, replaced by another body of water.
—A lake of waste liquid, with an eerie sheen and a pungent odor, formed by the accumulation of various wastes and organic residues.
There is such a place between almost every garbage mountain.
The shell-dwellers, who were deliberately modified to retain a slight need for drinking water, now compete for water resources there.
The polluted air, the despairing scene, and the twisted figures writhing in the garbage heaps together constitute this 51st district.
"I absolutely don't want to stay here" was Varian's first impression of District 51.
Varian felt a sudden unease; his purple skin seemed to tighten slightly.
But it glanced at Luke beside it, whose eyes were gleaming with interest, and whose fiber optic organ was trembling slightly with excitement.
Seeing this, Varian had no choice but to suppress his discomfort and try to maintain a 'curious' expression, making his whiskers sway gently.
Luke issued the command, transmitting clear vibrations through the fiber optic organ.
"Start scanning."
The spaceship's onboard precision scanning system silently activated, sending invisible ripples across the layers of garbage mountains and the creatures struggling within them.
The data stream scrolled rapidly on the screen in the cockpit, and in just over ten seconds, the entire 51st district was easily scanned.
Suddenly, an unusual scene that stood out from its surroundings was captured and highlighted.
The instant he saw it clearly, one of Luke's whiskers pointed to the edge of a raised pile of garbage in the distance, and he said excitedly:
"Varian, look there!"
Varian turned his gaze in that direction and was immediately surprised.
Because there, amidst a pile of twisted metal scraps, stood a 'house'.
Although extremely rudimentary, it was simply cobbled together from scrapped spaceship panels, heat insulation tiles, and pipe remnants.
But it does have walls, a roof, and a doorway-like opening, which makes it barely worthy of being called a 'house'.
Luke's fiber optic organ curled up slightly as he asked:
"Varian, the 'Shell People'...can they build houses?"
Varian struggled to recall the knowledge he had learned from his elders, and hesitantly replied:
"I don't think I have that kind of habit."
"My elders told me that the modified 'shell people' have completely lost the concept of 'dwelling'."
"For them, the thick shell on their backs is the most natural 'home,' where they can curl up to rest or hide from danger at any time."
"The 'Shell People' building independent dwellings... seems to be an unobserved behavior."
Luke suddenly became excited, and several of his tentacles twirled happily in the air.
"In other words, this is not merely a physical act, Varian!"
"Building one's own house represents the budding of self-awareness and the need for privacy and personal space!"
"This might be an individual with abnormal behavior..."
"What a stark contrast to those other 'shell people' who only know how to wriggle and fight in the garbage dump!"
"This is... amazing!"
That stiff, human-like 'smile' reappeared on Luke's face.
Under Luke's control, the spaceship quickly approached the simple shack.
Subsequently, more detailed life scans and structural perspectives were conducted simultaneously.
In just a short while, the screen clearly displayed the scene inside the shed:
A "shell-man" lay sprawled on the filthy ground, his vital signs already very weak and still declining.
What shocked the observers, Rook and Varian, even more was the appearance of this shell-like creature.
His thin, bony hands, with prominent knuckles, were gripping the edge of the thick, grayish-brown armor on his back.
He had already torn most of the carapace off his torso, revealing a horrific, bloody wound underneath.
A large amount of thick, brownish bodily fluid spread out as a stain beneath him, emitting a strong, fishy odor.
Several pieces of what appeared to be intestines had even prolapsed, and the internal organs were scattered all over the cold ground.
"Was he...killed?"
Rook's voice was filled with disbelief, and his whiskers involuntarily curled up.
Varian involuntarily brought his eyes closer to the screen, quickly realizing what was happening:
"No, the wound was forcibly torn at the junction of the carapace... He did it himself!"
"But...why? What is he doing?"
"The shell of the human is deeply integrated with the major internal organs and nervous system; forcibly separating it will undoubtedly result in death."
"Shell people should have a survival instinct and be free from self-destructive behaviors; this should be ingrained in their genes..."
Upon hearing this, Luke realized what was happening and his eyes widened immediately.
"He...committed suicide?!"
This discovery filled Luke with immense excitement.
"Quickly! Proceed with emergency medical intervention immediately!"
"During the demolition of buildings, which involve direct contact with individuals, the most efficient regenerative gel is used!"
"Such a unique individual, we absolutely cannot let him die here! I must keep him alive!"
-----------------
On his deathbed, Li Lin felt his consciousness sinking like a stone into the deep sea.
The pain has become numb, and the heaviness in my body seems to be fading away.
In the cold darkness, a strange sense of relief enveloped me.
The hatred and despair he had felt for this body since he transmigrated seemed to be about to vanish with the passing of his life.
However, just before his consciousness was about to sink into eternal silence, he saw a beam of bright light.
The roof was completely removed, and the searchlights from the spaceship illuminated his entire body.
He was like the operating light on the operating table, and he was the patient about to undergo surgery.
He strained to lift his eyes, but saw a large shadow descending from the sky.
The next moment, Li Lin felt his body being completely submerged.
From a physical perspective, it felt like a gel, cool and viscous, with a jelly-like texture, which enveloped his entire body.
This gel, which requires only 100g to apply to a wound, is enough to regenerate limbs and is a powerful treatment that is unaffordable for ordinary Vera.
At this moment, more than 100 kg of gel completely submerged Li Lin, as if it were free.
The moment this strange gel touched the wound, it produced a slight, minty coolness.
The gushing brown blood seemed to be instantly choked by an invisible force, stopping its outflow.
The excruciating, bone-deep tearing pain subsided at an astonishing speed, replaced by a tingling, itchy sensation, as the wound began to heal rapidly.
At the same time, the body is greedily absorbing the large amount of nutrients carried by the gel.
In just a few seconds, Li Lin, who was on the verge of death, was rescued and his vital signs stabilized.
