Chapter 65 Mission
Five o'clock in the morning, Yanda University.
The morning mist was thick, and the streetlights cast dim, yellowish glows in the fog. The air was damp and cold, and breathing it in brought a chill to my lungs.
Xu Yuan pulled his mask up to cover most of his face and started jogging along the campus path, but his complexion was not very good.
Just now, he discovered something terrifying: the change he always kept in his pocket was gone.
He had planned to go home today, but his electric scooter broke down yesterday, which means he will need to take a taxi home today.
Now, he has no money to pay for his taxi fare.
Xu Yuan's phone balance was already empty, but luckily he still had some change to fall back on. He was secretly pleased with himself for having brought change, but when he reached into his pocket just before leaving the dormitory, the money had vanished.
"Could it be that I accidentally lost it when I went out yesterday?" Xu Yuan frowned, but he could only accept the reality helplessly.
"I remember it would cost 18.5 yuan to take a taxi back. Do you think I, a college student, would be troubled by such a small amount of money?"
He ran while pondering to himself, feeling somewhat troubled. After a while, he sighed and said, "Forget it, I'll just keep running."
Xu Yuan yawned, a wave of drowsiness washing over him. Last night, he and his roommates drank and chatted until the early hours of the morning, gossiping, discussing their ideals, and talking about the international situation. He had also drunk quite a bit, and his head was still a little dizzy.
Thinking back to last night's casual conversation, aside from the initial gossip about girls, the topic we talked about most was our future after graduation.
With their senior year approaching, and soon to leave school and enter the workforce, becoming laborers struggling to make a living, the others, including Xu Yuan, were filled with uncertainty about the future, except for Zhao Ze, who came from a wealthy family and had no worries.
"What should I do in the future?" Xu Yuan thought about the future, and a sense of melancholy rose in his heart.
Given his current condition, it's unrealistic for him to go to work normally. After all, his left hand is too mentally challenged. If he suddenly had a whim and secretly touched someone or even punched them, wouldn't he be immediately taken to the police station?
"What kind of job would be more suitable for me?" Xu Yuan was pondering this question when a campus patrol car slowly drove up behind him.
Inside the car, the security guard holding the steering wheel looked at Xu Yuan jogging ahead and sighed sincerely, "College students are so energetic; their spirit is just different."
"That's right, the days of studying are the most carefree, you don't have to worry about anything."
The other security guard in the passenger seat chimed in, his tone full of nostalgia: "Back in my college days, an extra chicken leg for dinner would make me happy all day. My biggest dream back then was to start working and earn money so I could eat as many chicken legs as I wanted. Looking back now, it was so adorably naive."
The security guard driving the car joked with a smile, "Brother Li, didn't you already achieve your dream?"
"Xiao Zhou, stop teasing me." The middle-aged man, called Brother Li, spoke with a desolate tone. "The dream has come true, but who would have thought that I'd be trading my life for a living like this? I live in constant fear, my head is always hanging by a thread. Just thinking about it keeps me up at night."
Brother Li is only in his early thirties, but he already has a lot of gray hair at his temples, which looks particularly incongruous.
"Brother Li, just take it easy." Xiao Zhou seemed quite nonchalant, smiling slightly. "On the contrary, I find life much more interesting now than before."
"What kind of life did I live before? I worked a lousy job, and I could see the end of my days in the blink of an eye. I was living in a daze and couldn't find any meaning in life. You think that entering society means your life has just begun, but it's actually already over."
"Life is a bit more dangerous now, but there's much more hope than before," Xiao Zhou said with a sigh. Then, he changed the subject, "By the way, today is Pei Yan's first mission. Don't keep talking about life and death, or you'll scare the young lady."
Li Chuan realized what was happening and turned back to the girl in the back seat with a slightly apologetic look: "Sorry, Xiao Yan, I was just venting casually, don't take it to heart. Today was just a basic mission of an abnormal level, purely for practice, there's nothing dangerous about it."
"It's alright, Brother Li," Pei Yan shook her head repeatedly, "I should thank you all for being willing to take me along."
Despite saying that, there was a hint of nervousness in her tone.
"It's not really about taking care of her," Zhou Wenyu, who was driving, said with a relaxed smile. "Taking on newcomers is an easy task with decent compensation. Besides, the newcomer is such a good-looking girl. We'd love to have this kind of job more often."
Pei Yan nodded slightly, her expression serious: "In any case, I will have to trouble Brother Li and Brother Zhou to take care of me in the future."
"No need to be so polite," Zhou Wenyu waved his hand, then asked curiously, "By the way, how did it feel to carry out your first mission at your alma mater?"
Pei Yan's tense nerves relaxed slightly. After thinking for a moment, she smiled faintly: "I can't quite put my finger on it, it feels quite strange."
She was a senior at Yanda University, and her first disaster mission after joining the Sickness Management Bureau happened to fall on her own campus, which inevitably made her feel disoriented.
"Hahaha!" Li Chuan suddenly got gossipy. "I heard that Xiao Yan is the campus belle of Yanda University. Tell me honestly, are there quite a few boys pursuing you at school?"
Pei Yan was naturally beautiful and outstanding. She wore a light gray loose sweatshirt with light khaki jogger pants. Her long hair was casually tied into a low ponytail with a few strands hanging down by her temples. She was clean and lively, the kind of girl who would make people feel good at first glance.
Feeling a little embarrassed by the teasing, Pei Yan said, "There's no such thing as a school beauty. It's just something people say without thinking."
Seeing that her nervousness had subsided considerably, Li Chuan teased her, "That's not just a rumor. In my opinion, Xiao Yan is absolutely deserving of the title of school beauty."
As he spoke, he gestured with his chin towards the figures passing patrol cars outside the window: "Look, that young man jogging this morning keeps glancing our way. Is he a guy who has a crush on you?"
Pei Yan was slightly taken aback, turned her head and looked out, and sure enough, she saw a boy wearing a mask looking straight at her.
"That's true." Zhou Wenyu glanced over as well, and couldn't help but chuckle. "Look at him, still staring at Pei Yan!"
"Haha, didn't you guys notice? He kept turning around when the car was still behind us," Li Chuan joked. "Xiao Yan's charm is truly undeniable."
Pei Yan's cheeks flushed slightly from what the two were saying, but she quickly realized something was wrong and hesitated before saying, "Why do I feel like... he's not looking at me, but rather at Brother Zhou?"
"Huh?" Zhou Wenyu was taken aback, turned his head to look at the boy, and sure enough, he met the boy's direct gaze.
Feeling inexplicably uncomfortable being stared at so openly, his smile faded, and he couldn't help but mutter under his breath, "Seriously, is he crazy? Why is he staring at me like that?"
Li Chuan glanced back and immediately chuckled: "That's your problem, Xiao Zhou. You're too charming, can't others even take a second look?"
He spoke jokingly, his face beaming with a smile, but the next second he noticed the boy's gaze suddenly shift to him, and his smile instantly froze on his face.
He stubbornly shook his head left and right, up and down, but to his surprise, the man seemed to have received a secret signal from him, his gaze fixed on him, moving up and down with him.
His smile vanished completely, and the smile shifted to Zhou Wenyu's face.
"Oh, I knew it! I can't compare to Brother Li. You're much more charming..."
Zhou Wenyu couldn't hold back any longer and was about to tease back when the other person's gaze locked onto him again. The words that were about to come out caught in his throat, and his expression became as awkward as if he had swallowed a fly.
He and Li Chuan exchanged an awkward glance, then quickly looked away, both falling silent and becoming completely obedient.
"Pfft—"
Pei Yan, sitting in the back seat, couldn't help but chuckle. She found the two seniors quite amusing. When she noticed Zhou Wenyu turning around to look at her, she quickly suppressed her laughter and pretended to be serious.
Zhou Wenyu felt slightly embarrassed, pressed the accelerator slightly harder, and said sullenly, "I think I understand now, this kid definitely has some mental issues."
Pei Yan glanced back. The patrol car sped up, and the figure receded into the distance, gradually disappearing into the fog.
"Get ready," Brother Li suddenly said seriously, "We'll be there soon."
Pei Yan snapped out of her reverie and looked ahead—a somewhat dilapidated teaching building gradually came into view in the morning mist.
