Chapter 3 What am I?
I returned home feeling a little tired; it was already nine in the morning.
The room was quiet, without a sound. The furnishings were exactly the same as when he left, without any signs of being disturbed.
My mom isn't home; there's only a note on the dining table in the living room.
Seeing the familiar handwriting, Xu Yuan finally relaxed completely.
"It seems Mom is indeed alright."
After discovering the body had been in his home in the early hours of the morning, he immediately called his mother to confirm that she was safe.
But it wasn't until I got home and saw everything was normal that I finally felt relieved.
"It seems that the corpse was targeting me alone..." Xu Yuan frowned in thought, a question rising in his mind. "Why would that be? Is it just because it sent me a message?"
He made this conjecture because after he killed the corpse, the unfamiliar IDs in his friend list mysteriously disappeared.
"Perhaps only those who receive the message will be targeted by the corpses?"
Xu Yuan suddenly remembered that Chen Fei had said in the class group that many people in Wutong District had hanged themselves.
Perhaps those people didn't commit suicide, but were attacked by corpses like him.
However, he wasn't sure if that was the truth. After thinking for a while without any clue, he stopped worrying about it and picked up the note on the table to examine it closely.
"Mom's gone to work. Your food's on the table; remember to reheat it if it gets cold. Keep it up, Mom believes you're the best!"
Xu Yuan felt a warmth in his heart.
He was a third-year student at Yanjiang University, and should have been living on campus, but a sudden, strange illness a month ago forced him to suspend his studies and return home to recuperate.
During this period, he was able to recover thanks to his mother's meticulous care.
The illness came on strangely. Although the high fever subsided in a few days, the abnormality of his body still left him feeling confused and fearful.
The occasional twitching in his left hand made him question his existence, and he locked himself in his room for several days, afraid to see anyone.
Just when he had finally adjusted his mindset and was ready to face life again, his left hand started urging him to train during various ghostly periods, making it even less time to see his mother.
Although his mother didn't know what had happened to him, she always cared about him silently. Knowing that he didn't want to be disturbed, she communicated with him by leaving notes and encouraged him.
"To be honest, my mom and I have barely seen each other this month, and we haven't even exchanged a single word."
Thinking of this, Xu Yuan felt both moved and guilty, so he picked up a pen and carefully added a sentence to the back of the note:
"Thank you, Mom. I love you."
After tidying up briefly, he served breakfast and, while eating, took out his phone to search for keywords like "abnormal" and "monster" online.
A quick search revealed that there were quite a few similar messages.
Basketballs bouncing on their own in parking lots, eerie cries coming from abandoned hospitals, gods and spirits occasionally appearing in parks, newborns with mutated skin... all sorts of things, it's hard to tell what's real and what's fake.
"I have a feeling that there are more and more news like this lately."
Xu Yuan looked for a while but didn't find any useful clues. He shook his head, cleaned up the dishes and took them to the kitchen to wash them, then turned and went into the bathroom to take a shower.
Taking off his clothes and standing in front of the bathroom mirror, Xu Yuan admired his well-defined, smooth eight-pack abs, raising an eyebrow in satisfaction: "So handsome, I can only say, as expected of me."
To be fair, although Zuo Shou is a bit eccentric and always causing trouble, it has indeed changed him a lot. Compared to a month ago, his appearance and temperament have changed considerably.
"Splash..."
Warm water poured down from the showerhead, washing away the sweat and fatigue from his body. Xu Yuan sighed contentedly, "Ah, that feels good..."
As his thoughts gradually drifted away, he couldn't help but recall what had happened that day.
"What is that corpse? What is the calamity mentioned by the left hand? And what about what Chen Fei and the others mentioned in the group chat—is it a rumor, or is it true?"
As questions arose in his mind, Xu Yuan vaguely realized that this world might be far more complex and bizarre than he had imagined.
But then, a new idea popped into my head.
"If these things really exist, why is there so little information about them? Are they simply rare, or is someone secretly eliminating them and concealing the truth?"
But if such people really exist, then in their eyes... what am I?
Xu Yuan stood before the misty mirror, unable to see his own expression. As if possessed, he raised his finger and slowly wrote a line on the fogged surface:
Am I human... or a monster?
Xu Yuan stared at the words silently, speechless for a moment.
Just then, my left hand suddenly rose uncontrollably and wrote two lines of text crookedly below the first line:
"Neither."
"—You are a hero."
"Hero..." Xu Yuan stared at the two words quietly. For some reason, his heart suddenly clenched, and a strange emotion welled up in his heart, only to quickly dissipate.
The feeling came and went quickly, without any apparent reason. After a long while, he smiled and said, "I didn't expect you to be so good at comforting people."
My previously gloomy mood suddenly lightened considerably.
Xu Yuan stopped dwelling on these issues. He decided to accept his fate and focus on living his life as it was.
After drying his hair and tossing his dirty clothes into the washing machine, Xu Yuan planned to go back to his bedroom for a good rest.
But as soon as he stepped into the living room and his gaze swept across the table, he suddenly stopped in his tracks, his brows furrowing as he vaguely sensed that something was amiss.
After a few seconds of stunned silence, he suddenly realized—
"Hey, where's that rope?"
After he beat the corpse to death with his fists, he left behind a black rope.
He found it interesting, so he took it home and planned to study it.
He clearly remembered putting it on the living room table, so how did it disappear in the blink of an eye?
"Whoosh—!"
Just as he was deep in thought, a familiar whooshing sound suddenly came from behind him!
A dark shadow, like a nimble venomous snake, made a clear move and coiled directly towards Xu Yuan's neck!
Just as it was about to wrap around his neck, Xu Yuan seemed to have eyes in the back of his head. With a "snap," he casually raised his left hand and firmly grasped the dark figure in his palm.
"Trying to use the same trick on me again?"
Xu Yuan spoke calmly and slowly, pulling it towards him. It was the black rope that had disappeared.
This is a round, matte black cord, only 3 millimeters thick, about the same thickness as a mobile phone data cable.
It feels smooth and firm to the touch, cool to the touch, and looks unremarkable, but it is quite heavy, much heavier than a regular rope.
Clutched in my hand, the black rope seemed to come alive, twisting and struggling desperately.
The noose tried to tighten around Xu Yuan's neck again, but no matter how hard it struggled, it couldn't break free from his grasp.
Xu Yuan subconsciously touched his neck—the previous marks from the strangulation had long since disappeared, leaving only a faint imprint.
This is one of the benefits of his left hand regaining consciousness; his recovery ability far exceeds that of ordinary people. Even so, his previous experience of suffocation still leaves him with lingering fear.
Thinking of this, Xu Yuan's eyes turned cold, and a sneer curled at the corner of his lips: "You've fallen into my hands, and you still dare to be so arrogant?"
