Chapter 12 Encountering a Ghost?

Midnight, Yanda University.

The night was as dark as ink, and the campus was quiet except for the streetlights, which cast long shadows of a few people.

"To be honest," Li Da said, walking at the front, rubbing his stomach and shaking his head with a sigh, "the barbecue here has gotten so much worse, it's practically tasteless."

Liang Xiaolong let out a long yawn, a tear welling up in his eye: "If it's not tasty, why did you brag about it so much?"

"What do you know?" Li Da said matter-of-factly. "Life is all about eating and drinking, and besides, I was just trying not to waste food."

Xu Yuan, who was standing nearby, offered a fair assessment: "It really doesn't taste as good as it used to."

Zhao Ze followed behind Xu Yuan with his head down, his attention entirely on the ground. He moved lightly, each step precisely landing on Xu Yuan's shadow's head, having a great time by himself.

He casually chimed in, "I checked, and it seems the owner of that place has changed. The food really isn't that great. I'll try a different place next time."

Xu Yuan was speechless for a moment: "Isn't this childish?"

As soon as he finished speaking, he suddenly swayed to the left and slid to the right, his feet lightly changing position. His shadow under the streetlights twisted and turned with him, as agile as a fish, and he easily dodged Zhao Ze's "pursuit" in a few moves.

Liu Cheng watched the two elementary school students' behavior from behind, then suddenly took out his phone and snapped a picture of their backs.

Liang Xiaolong curiously leaned closer: "What are you doing?"

"Haven't you heard that saying?" Liu Cheng put away his phone, looking sentimental. "A minor goes out to buy alcohol, brings back osmanthus flowers, learns freestyle... I always felt this scene was worth recording."

"No, no," Zhao Ze was the first to raise his hands in surrender. "Brother Yuan, are you a slippery eel? You're too agile."

Xu Yuan stood with his hands behind his back, smiled faintly, and said in an exceptionally calm tone, "Aze, you still need to practice."

The group strolled leisurely to the vicinity of the playground. Xu Yuan immediately noticed several tents set up inside, with tables, chairs, and curtains piled up on the ground. He asked curiously, "What are those?"

"Oh, isn't there a flea market tomorrow?" Li Da explained, "Those are venues that have been set up in advance."

"A flea market?" Xu Yuan's interest was piqued. He turned to look at Li Da. "What kind of things do they have?"

"A great opportunity!"

Zhao Ze's eyes suddenly lit up. Taking advantage of Xu Yuan's distraction, he launched a sneak attack and stomped on Xu Yuan's shadow head!

Xu Yuan didn't even turn his head. He flicked his head slightly, and his shadow moved aside, easily avoiding his attack.

Zhao Ze's face fell, and he became completely obedient.

"They have everything: old books, clothes, small appliances, figurines..." Liu Cheng added with a smile, "And the anime club is even holding a ring toss game. I heard the prizes are all from the upperclassmen's collections, which is pretty good."

He then looked at the crowd and said, "I'm planning to come and browse around tomorrow, what about you?"

"I'm not going, it's pointless," Li Da said, shaking his head.

"I'm not going either," Liang Xiaolong nodded in agreement. "I'm planning to play games all night and then sleep until the afternoon. That's what I call a carefree life!"

"Never mind then," Liu Cheng sighed, feigning disappointment. "I heard that Senior Pei Yan will also be coming tomorrow to help the anime club with their booth. There are also quite a few senior girls from the anime club who will be coming in cosplay outfits. It seems like I'll be the only one going to show my support."

After these words were spoken, the surroundings fell silent for a moment.

"Which Pei Yan?" Zhao Ze suddenly looked up.

"How many Pei Yans are left in our school?"

Li Da immediately stroked his chin, looking thoughtful: "Ring toss? Sounds interesting. I think I have a good talent for it, so I can give it a try."

Liang Xiaolong's spirits lifted: "Let's go! We must support you!"

"If I remember correctly, didn't you have an online boyfriend?" Liu Cheng feigned confusion. "Besides, didn't you just say you were going to sleep until the afternoon?"

Liang Xiaolong argued vehemently, "What kind of talk is it to sleep until the afternoon? Only a complete loser with no energy would do that!"

"Besides, the flea market only comes once a year. If I miss it, I'll have to wait until next year. Shouldn't I do my part to promote campus culture?"

"Xiaolong is right," Zhao Ze said, adopting a patriotic stance. "Contributing to our school's GDP is the inescapable responsibility of us young people!"

"It starts at ten o'clock, right? We'll be there at nine-thirty!"

Xu Yuan had actually seen Pei Yan a few times at school. She was pretty, but was it really that exaggerated?

Zhao Ze seemed to sense his confusion and explained, "Senior Pei Yan is much prettier in person than in photos. Besides, she's a cosplayer; she has a lot of fans online and is super popular!"

Xu Yuan still couldn't understand.

"Brother Yuan, you're like a well-fed man who doesn't know the hunger of an starving man," Zhao Ze patted his shoulder. "You've already hooked up with Tang Xinxin, how could you understand the suffering of us?"

Xu Yuan ignored him.

The group chatted and laughed as they continued walking towards their dormitory. As they passed Building 2 in Area C, Zhao Ze suddenly slowed his pace.

"What's wrong?" Xu Yuan asked.

"Brother Yuan, you don't know," Zhao Ze looked up at the dark teaching building and lowered his voice, "the forums have been saying lately... this place is haunted."

"Haunted?"

Xu Yuan looked over subconsciously.

The entire teaching building was eerily dark, with only the emergency lights on the first-floor corridor casting a ghastly white glow. The rows of dark windows, like eyes, silently stared at them.

"I've heard about this too," Liang Xiaolong subconsciously shrank his neck. "It's been circulating a lot on the forums lately. Some people are saying they can hear a baby crying in the middle of the night."

"They say a girl once gave birth in this building, and both she and her baby died. Ever since then, this place has been unclean."

"It's fake, right?" Li Da didn't believe it. "Every school has these kinds of ghost stories, most of them are made up."

"That's not necessarily true," Liang Xiaolong said in a low voice. "Someone did hear it, around midnight, coming from inside the building."

The group exchanged glances and unconsciously moved a little closer together.

Xu Yuan walked at the very back, looked up at the pitch blackness, and found it unusually quiet.

"You guys really believe in this stuff?" Li Da curled his lip in disdain. "I don't believe it anyway. If there really is a ghost, let it come out and let me see."

"If you're so brave, go ahead and do it," Liang Xiaolong provoked him.

"Fine, I'll go!" Li Da took a step forward.

"Alright, alright," Zhao Ze quickly pulled him back. "It's late at night, don't make trouble for yourself."

Li Da was always stubborn, so he took the opportunity to back down, silently retreating.

Just as the group was about to continue walking, Xu Yuan suddenly stopped.

"What's wrong, Brother Yuan?" Zhao Ze asked.

Xu Yuan didn't speak, but slowly turned his head and looked in the direction of the teaching building.

Zhao Ze wanted to ask more, but his expression suddenly changed—

The teaching building, which had been unusually quiet just moments before, was suddenly filled with the sound of footsteps!

"Shh...shh..."

The sound was very soft at first, like the sole of a shoe scraping the ground.

Then, the rhythm suddenly quickened, getting closer and closer, becoming clearer and clearer.

"Shhhhhh—"

The footsteps quickened dramatically, as if something... was running wildly down the hallway!

"Holy crap?!" Zhao Ze was jolted awake, his face turning deathly pale.

"Could there really be something there?!" Li Da panicked and subconsciously took a step back.

The group stared intently at the dark stairwell entrance, their heartbeats louder than their footsteps.

Only Xu Yuan remained calm, slowly reaching into his pocket and pulling something out.

The footsteps grew closer and louder—

"Bang!"

The stairwell door was suddenly kicked open, and two figures rushed out like madmen.

"Holy crap!" Zhao Ze was so frightened by the sound of the impact that he almost fell to the ground.

He quickly grabbed Xu Yuan's arm, turned around and tried to run, yelling, "Brother Yuan, run—!"

He tugged twice, but Xu Yuan stood still, unmoved.

"Brother Yuan?"

Zhao Ze was stunned for a moment, before he could react, when he saw two figures tumbling and scrambling out of the teaching building, followed by two screams even more exaggerated than his own:

"Oh my god!"

"Hold!"

Caught off guard, the two sides met face to face and were both stunned into silence.

Upon seeing the person's face clearly, Zhao Ze's eyes widened, and he exclaimed incredulously, "Xu Liang?! Chen Fei?!"
