Chapter 8 The Knot of Death

Will Dawkins was sitting in the Wildcats' stands. As a college scout for the Thunder, he traveled around the country every day like a flyer, selecting the best prospects for the Thunder among these college players.

Long flights and jet lag made him make iced Americano an essential drink.

He put down his coffee and pulled his laptop from his lap to his chest to avoid being knocked to the ground by the excited fans next to him.

Today, his job is to scout Aldridge, the "new hope for American white big men" for the Jayhawks.

Thunder executives began focusing on the center during March Madness last season.

His boss, Thunder scouting director Hennigan, believed that this tall, white center would be the best option to pair with Durant and the newly drafted Westbrook.

As Dawkins watched Aldridge disrupt Wildcats center Lofdale's floater, sending it crashing onto the rim, his fingers flew across the keyboard.

"Aldridge possesses exceptional defensive abilities for a college player; his long arms create an insurmountable barrier between the basketball and the rim."

After Dawkins finished hitting the ball, he looked up at the court again. The basketball that had hit the rim was flying in the air. Just as the Jayhawks' power forward was about to catch the ball, the Wildcats' number eight, a yellow-skinned Chinese player, rushed out from the side and flew into the air.

Dawkins was unaware that the Wildcats had a Chinese forward. His team intelligence only included two noteworthy points about the Wildcats: Stephen Curry, who had a stellar season last year, and the newly recruited four-star player, Eze.

Chinese? Forward?

Dawkins shook his head. Had Wildcats head coach McGillop gone senile?

Zhou Yi had been keeping a close eye on the situation inside, and when he saw Lovedale's floater deflected by Aldridge's interference, he noticed...

He nimbly cut past Marcus Morris and drove toward the basket.

When he stepped one foot inside the free-throw line, Zhou Yi mustered his strength and launched himself into the air, catching the basketball with his large hand.

Aldridge looked ahead and saw that the Chinese kid had suddenly appeared out of nowhere and snatched the basketball in mid-air.

Zhou Yi, who caught the basketball in mid-air, did not fall. As if defying gravity, he continued to rise. He held the ball in one hand, stretched out his arm in the air, and slammed the basketball toward the basket.

"Shit..."

Aldridge instantly realized that the damn Chinese player, the "Chinese guy" he was talking about killing, was referring to a putback dunk over him.

He quickly adjusted his position and straightened his arms, but Zhou Yi was too fast, so fast that Aldridge couldn't react in time to jump.

"boom--"

Zhou Yi's body slammed into Aldridge's body, and the Jayhawks' interior defense collapsed.

Aldridge felt as if he had been hit by a speeding car, but this car had an extra part, like a baton hitting him in the face.

He fell backward with his hands raised high, while Zhou Yi's legs flew over his head in mid-air.

"God, Wildcats' number eight player Zhou leaped over Aldridge. He jumped so high that his head was even above the rim. My God, that jump must have been over 115cm."

Johnny's voice, the commentator from the local television station, came through the television screen.

As a commentator who has covered basketball in the Davidson area for thirty years, he can swear to God that this was the most brutal dunk he had ever seen in his commentary career.

The fans watching the game were instantly ignited by Zhou Yi's explosive dunk, and in an instant, the 5,000-seat stadium seemed to boil like water in a pot of oil.

"My God, he actually leaped over Aldridge, who is 213 meters tall, in mid-air."

"FUCK, God forgive my stupid brain, I actually sent Zhou back to the bench. From today onwards, I am his most devout fan."

Meanwhile, the Wildcats players excitedly surrounded Zhou Yi.

Curry held his head in his hands, staring unblinkingly at Zhou Yi, who had fallen to the ground, his face full of disbelief.

The screams and cheers seemed to burst through the roof of the entire stadium, and the scene was briefly out of control. Some excited fans even tried to rush onto the court to hug Zhou Yi, and the game was temporarily interrupted.

"Beep beep beep—"

Security guards blew whistles to quickly control the scene and formed a human wall in an attempt to calm the excited fans down.

Thunder scout Dawkins watched the scene unfold on the court in astonishment from the stands. When Zhou Yi made that dunk, he and the excited fans in the arena stood up, and the notebook he had been tightly protecting in his arms fell to the ground.

Dawkins grabbed his already thinning hair, trying to calm himself down.

Dunking is the most spectacular performance on the basketball court, a scoring method that allows players to perfectly showcase their talent to the world.

"Damn Wildcats, where did they find this Chinese kid? God must have maxed out his basketball talent when he created him."

Dawkins' scout instincts prompted him to quickly pick up his notebook.

He deleted the entire line of scouting reports about Aldridge and his fingers flew across the keyboard.

"Manager Hennigan, forget about that damn Aldridge, I've discovered a hidden gem..."

The excited fans in the stadium gradually calmed down, and the game continued.

Zhou Yi's incredible dunk seemed to have struck every player on the Jayhawks. The players on the court looked like they had lost their souls, and even the usually steady point guard Collins made several basic mistakes.

The Wildcats, on the other hand, were in high spirits. They kept running, passing and shooting, implementing head coach McGillop's passing and cutting system.

The Wildcats continued to widen the score gap.

On the bench, Bill Self, the champion coach of the Jayhawks, called a timeout. He roared at the dejected players with his large belly sticking out, spitting everywhere.

"Fuck, you guys are the champions from last season, and you've been defeated by that Chinese kid? Go out there and beat that Zhou to a pulp."

The Jayhawks players, who had been keeping their heads down, were inspired by Self's roar. As the champions of last season, their fighting spirit was reignited by their head coach.

Only Aldridge kept his head down, covering his face with a towel. Countless images flashed through his mind of Zhou Yi flying over his head and the words he spoke to him after landing.

"Hold on tight, cute white girl."

Aldridge, with his 213-point height, has suffered the most devastating blow, and now all he wants to do is return to the locker room and leave this heartbreaking place.

After the timeout, the Jayhawks returned to the court and began double-teaming Zhou Yi, to the point of frantic activity, with the referee's whistle blowing repeatedly.

Zhou Yi drew the defense's attention, allowing Curry to find more offensive opportunities, and three-pointers rained down on the court.

When the Jayhawks shifted their focus to Curry, Zhou Yi stepped up again, repeatedly receiving passes and hitting mid-range shots with his agile movement.

当晃开稚嫩的马库斯莫里斯后,周易命中了自己本场的第八记中投,全场已经拿到了31分8板3助2抢断2盖帽。

Those two blocks were also for Aldridge. This pre-game boastful American white center, a rising star, became disoriented on the court after being dunked on, and even dared not look at Zhou Yi.

He made 4 of 14 field goals and 1 of 2 free throws, scoring only nine points, but made a huge contribution to the Davidson Wildcats' successful revenge.
