Chapter 16 The Prodigy: Please Read On

The Duke fans on the sidelines cheered for the home team's offensive and defensive plays, their deafening roar seemingly designed to destroy the Wildcats players on the court.

"Hey Smith and McGee, looks like the Wildcats are in big trouble tonight."

God bless these kids, and hopefully tonight's game at Duke Arena won't become their nightmare later.

Wilburn's voice rang out from inside the ESPN broadcast studio.

Looking at Smith and the Magician who supported Zhou Yi, he said with a hint of mockery and sarcasm.

......

The game continued, with the Wildcats taking the lead in attack.

Despite Noel's interference, Curry steadily advanced the ball into the attacking third.

After a somewhat unsuccessful start, Curry opted for a safer strategy.

The Wildcats' two big men set consecutive screens for Curry at the top of the key.

However, the terrifying atmosphere of Duke University's hellish court prevented the Wildcats' pick-and-roll from holding up completely.

Noel, in pursuit, forced his way through and reached out to Curry.

Noel's hand obstructed Curry's shooting vision, and the basketball arced through the air, hit the rim, and bounced away.

Duke University center, Zubike, the Great White Bear, stretched out his arm, ready to easily catch the rebound that bounced towards him.

As a 216cm center, although his dynamic talent is mediocre, his static talent is extremely outstanding.

This is also why Duke recruited him; his tall stature makes him a great rebounder on the NCAA court.

But suddenly a red figure darted out from beside him; it was Zhou Yi rushing out.

When Zhou Yi saw Curry take a mid-range shot, he was already ready to grab the rebound. He shook off his marker Henderson and dashed into the paint like lightning.

In previous training sessions, Coach McGillop had entrusted Zhou Yi with protecting the weak-side rebounds, hoping that Zhou Yi's jumping ability and wingspan would help the team grab more rebounds.

Zubac's slow movements gave him more opportunities. Zhou Yi sprang up like a spring, then knocked Zubac aside in mid-air and grabbed the basketball tightly.

"Zhou, the wonder boy has grabbed this precious offensive rebound."

With the rebound in hand, Zhou Yi didn't pass it back to Curry. Duke University's intimidating sideline presence at the start of the game temporarily made Zhou Yi and his teammates too nervous.

The Wildcats' morale was clearly low, and he wanted to take the ball himself.

Taking a large step toward the basket, Zhou Yi chose to dunk directly. Although Zubak's movements were slow, his long arms and big hands had already covered him.

Duke's center stared wide-eyed, his hands pressing down, trying to bring down the amazing kid attacking the Duke basket.

*Beep*—The referee blew the whistle for a defensive foul, and Zhou Yi fell to the ground under the basket.

But a second before he fell, Zhou Yi still managed to pass the basketball from his hands, and it grazed the backboard before falling into the basket.

"Zhou! Wonder boy! Two points and a free throw, even 216cm tall Zubac can't stop his determination to attack the basket."

Smith's cheers rang out quickly through the microphone as he clutched his number eight jersey tightly, watching the number eight figure on the court.

"The miracle of the boy continues at Duke University; no one can beat him!"

Zhou Yi was pulled up by Curry and walked to the free throw line.

Zhou Yi rubbed his palms, which had been slapped on the floor, and spun the basketball in his hands to get a feel for it.

The student stands behind the basketball hoop had gone wild. They were shouting, booing, cursing, and trying to interfere with Zhou Yi's free throws in every way possible.

All eyes were on Zhou Yi as the young Chinese man raised his hands to shoot.

"Whoosh—"

Zhou Yi responded to the boos from the crowd with a swishing basketball.

"Zhou Yi made the 2+1 play, helping the Wildcats tie the score."

After successfully making the free throw, Zhou Yi quickly retreated to the backcourt, and Duke University inbounded the ball.

Meanwhile, Henderson, who was positioned opposite Zhou Yi, appeared in front of Zhou Yi like a ghost.

"Hey, kid, congratulations on getting three points, but I guarantee it's your only three points of the game, and I'm going to score thirty points off you."

While trash-talking, Henderson took the pass from Duke point guard Noel and signaled to his teammates to spread out.

Duke University's star player decided to teach this damn prodigy a lesson.

Zhou Yi stretched out his arms and bent his legs slightly, standing half a step away from Henderson.

Before this match, Zhou Yi had studied Henderson's game videos countless times.

He is an explosive player, but he lacks a certain long-range shooting ability. He prefers to drive to the basket rather than shoot.

Henderson protected the basketball between his legs, then suddenly moved his feet, attempting to use his explosive speed to force his way past Zhou Yi.

But as soon as he took his first step, Zhou Yi's excellent physical model blocked his way.

Henderson's pupils dilated, seemingly surprised that this Chinese lad understood his methods.

With a crossover dribble, Henderson chose to drive to the basket on the other side, while Zhou Yi followed closely beside him.

Henderson's path to the basket was blocked by Zhou Yi's body, so he could only twist his body and try his best to throw the basketball towards the basket.

The basketball flew from Henderson's hands toward the backboard, attempting to bounce it off the backboard and score.

But then a pair of large yellow hands came flying through the air and slammed into the side of the basketball.

"Block! In the very first possession of their head-to-head matchup, the wonderkid swatted away Henderson's layup."

The basketball was slapped away by Zhou Yi, flying straight towards the Duke University stands and crashing into the crowd.

The air in the entire arena seemed to be sucked away, the noise level dropped to a minimum, and then there was a frenzy of boos.

Henderson stared at Zhou Yi with a livid face; this was not the scenario he had envisioned.

He should have started by beating up this recently famous prodigy, then the prodigy would launch a furious counterattack, and then he would be crushed again.

But basketball isn't a novel; there's no backstory followed by triumph. If one player's skill surpasses another's, it's a one-sided crushing victory.

"Nice try"

Zhou Yi spoke calmly, while Henderson's face twisted even more upon hearing this.

Duke University inbounded the ball again, but this time the basketball did not fall into Henderson's hands.

After Noel and Zubac executed a pick-and-roll, Noel made a mid-range jumper.

The game continued with alternating offense and defense.

After the initial tension, the Wildcats' other teammates gradually calmed down.

Lofdale engaged in a fierce physical battle with Zubac, who was 216cm tall, under the basket, trying to grab every rebound.

Curry and Wildcats shooting guard Gosling have also rediscovered their accuracy from three-point range.

The situation on the field became tense, with both sides constantly tackling, falling down, and the score changing hands repeatedly.

Duke University led the Davidson Wildcats by two points with 35 seconds left in the second half, with the score at 80-78.

The veteran coach called the last timeout of the game, and the Wildcats gained possession of the ball.
