Rebirth of the Hong Kong Millennium Conglomerate

Chapter 35 My Sister Goes to School

The lanterns for the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month still sway gently on the window frame, their delicate gold and red tassels fluttering in the breeze, casting shimmering spots of light on the floor.

Zhang Zeyang sat on the sofa in the living room, his fingertips unconsciously stroking the edge of the celadon teacup, his gaze falling on a small figure lying on the carpet not far away, playing with toys.

Zhang Lingyun will be four years old after the New Year. She has two soft pigtails and her pink and white woolen skirt has some biscuit crumbs stuck to the hem.

She was intently stacking triangular blocks on a cylindrical base, her chubby little hands twisting and turning the blocks, her nose slightly wrinkled from focus.

"Lingyun, come here." Zhang Zeyang's voice was very soft.

The little girl immediately looked up, her bright, black grape-like eyes sparkling as she gazed at him, a half-eaten strawberry melt-in-your-mouth snack still in her mouth: "Brother?" Her muffled childish voice carried a sticky sweetness.

She scrambled to her feet and ran to Zhang Zeyang, the pink bow on her pigtails askew behind her ears.

Zhang Zeyang reached out and tied the bow for her, his fingertips touching her warm earlobe. The little girl instinctively shrank her neck and giggled. "Lingyun has grown up," he said softly, looking at his little sister's upturned face. "How about going to kindergarten in a while? There are lots of children there, and teachers who teach singing and drawing."

"Kindergarten?" Zhang Lingyun blinked; the word was still unfamiliar to her. She tilted her head and thought for a moment, then suddenly clapped her hands and said, "Does it have slides and swings?"

"Yes," Zhang Zeyang chuckled, ruffling her soft hair, "and you have a lot of fun toys, even more than your brother bought for you."

"I want to go!" The little girl immediately raised her chubby little hand, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. "Can I build sandcastles with the other kids? Like the kind we played with at the beach last time, I want to do that again."

"Of course," he nodded, gently brushing her little nose with his fingertip, "but you have to be good at kindergarten, okay?"

"I know!" Zhang Lingyun nodded vigorously, her little head bobbing like a rattle drum. "Lingyun is the best girl!" she said, puffing out her little chest as if she were doing something very capable, which made Zhang Zeyang burst out laughing.

The warmth of the New Year gradually faded as people returned to work, and the office lights shone brightly again, creating a sea of stars. Zhang Zeyang picked up the phone at home: "Su Qing, come to my house."

Shortly after, Su Qing arrived at Zhang Zeyang's house and said, "Mr. Zhang, you wanted to see me?"

Regarding Lingyun's matter," Zhang Zeyang gestured for her to sit down, "she needs to go to kindergarten, could you please help me make some contact? The environment needs to be good, the teachers reliable, and the safety measures must be in place." He paused, then added, "Don't worry about the cost, the important thing is that it's suitable for the child."

"Okay, I'll arrange it right away and try to get back to you in the next couple of days." She had been working with Zhang Zeyang for almost a year and knew how much this boss cherished his younger sister, so she had to handle this matter personally and couldn't afford to be careless in the slightest.

"Thank you for your hard work." Zhang Zeyang nodded, watching Su Qing's back, silently considering what supplies he should prepare for Lingyun's entry into kindergarten.

Two days later, Su Qing came to Repulse Bay again and handed over a thick folder: "Mr. Zhang, I've made contact. This 'Starlight Kindergarten' is the most prestigious kindergarten in Hong Kong, using bilingual teaching, with teachers who are all graduates of internationally renowned universities, and a 24-hour security system."

I visited the place in person; the environment was very clean, the activity area was large, and the teachers seemed quite patient.

Zhang Zeyang opened the folder, which contained detailed records of the kindergarten's curriculum, catering standards, safety plans, and even several real-life photos.

"This one will do." He closed the folder, his tone filled with satisfaction. "Please complete the formalities as soon as possible. I'll personally take her there on the first day of school."

"It's almost done," Su Qing said, handing over an admission notice. "School officially starts next Monday. I've also made a list of the items you need to prepare. Please take a look."

Zhang Zeyang took the list, which included bedding, changes of clothes, water cups, and even the sizes of name tags were clearly marked. He looked at Su Qing and said, "Thank you, you've thought of everything."

Su Qing smiled and said, "Of course. I'll go take care of my work now."

After Su Qing left, Zhang Zeyang immediately called the butler: "Uncle Fu, prepare some things for Lingyun to bring to the garden. Here is the list."

On Monday morning, just as dawn was breaking, Zhang Zeyang was awakened by a soft knock on the door. He opened it and saw Lingyun standing there in her pajamas, rubbing her sleepy eyes, her pigtails askance: "Brother, are we going to kindergarten?"

"It's still early," Zhang Zeyang chuckled, bending down to pick her up. "Go wash up and have breakfast first, then we'll go."

The little one immediately perked up, squirming in his arms: "I want to wear that little blue dress! The one with little bunnies on it!"

"Okay, wear the bunny dress." Zhang Zeyang carried her into the dressing room and took out the bright blue dress from the wardrobe.

The dress was embroidered with several snow-white bunnies, and the hem had a thin layer of lace trim. It was a dress that I specially took Lingyun to pick out at a children's clothing store a few days ago. At the time, she held onto the dress tightly and refused to let go, saying that she wanted to dress up nicely to meet her new friends.

As Lingyun dressed and sat at the dining table, sipping her milk, Zhang Zeyang was in the living room giving instructions to the security captain.

"Place two people at the kindergarten. Although there are security guards inside, you still need to keep a close eye on her at all times and prevent strangers from getting close. Make sure that the daily pick-up and drop-off are carried out flawlessly."

"Don't worry, sir," the security captain stood at attention and saluted, "we will definitely ensure Miss's safety."

Zhang Zeyang nodded, his gaze shifting to the small figure in the restaurant feeding the cat breadcrumbs; he still couldn't shake the feeling of unease.

Although he knew the kindergarten had excellent security measures, it was Lingyun's first time attending school, and he felt inexplicably nervous, afraid that something might go wrong.

When she set off, Lingyun carried a small rabbit-shaped backpack containing her water bottle and a change of clothes.

The kindergarten gate was already filled with all kinds of luxury cars, and well-dressed parents were leading their children inside.

Zhang Zeyang held Lingyun's little hand and led her step by step into that colorful world. The teacher at the door, wearing a pink uniform, smiled gently: "Are you little Lingyun? I'm Teacher Li."

Lingyun timidly hid behind Zhang Zeyang, only her curious eyes peeking out. Zhang Zeyang squatted down and gently encouraged her, "Say hello to the teacher!"

The little one hesitated for a moment, then whispered, "Hello, Teacher Li." His voice was barely audible, yet full of obedience.

Teacher Li smiled and squatted down to look her in the eye. "Lingyun is such a good girl. Come inside with me. There are many children waiting for you." She held out her hand, and Lingyun looked at Zhang Zeyang. Seeing her brother nod, she carefully placed her hand in Teacher Li's palm.

"Brother will pick you up this afternoon." Zhang Zeyang watched his younger sister follow the teacher into the teaching building, turning back every few steps, until her small figure disappeared at the end of the corridor before slowly turning away.

The sunlight fell on him, but it couldn't dispel the emptiness in his heart.

Zhang Zeyang was somewhat absent-minded all afternoon. He kept thinking about whether Lingyun had eaten properly and whether she had been bullied by other children.

I finally made it to the end of the school day, grabbed my coat and rushed to kindergarten.

From afar, Zhang Zeyang could see a large group of parents gathered at the kindergarten gate. He immediately spotted the small figure in the blue dress, carrying a rabbit backpack, standing next to Teacher Li, peering into the crowd on tiptoe. "Lingyun!" he called out.

The little girl immediately turned her head, and the moment she saw Zhang Zeyang, her eyes lit up like two stars. She broke free from Teacher Li's hand and ran towards him, shouting, "Brother!" She ran so fast that she almost fell, so Zhang Zeyang quickly took a few steps to meet her and held her firmly in his arms.

"Did you have fun today?" Zhang Zeyang hugged her, feeling as if a weight had finally been lifted from his heart.

"So happy!" Lingyun's little face was flushed, and her eyes sparkled with excitement. "Brother, there's a huge slide in kindergarten! I played on it with my friends, and they even shared cookies with me!"

"Really?" Zhang Zeyang smiled and helped her wipe the clay stains off her face.

"And another thing," Lingyun said, hugging his neck and chattering away, "Teacher Li taught us to sing a song, and I also drew a picture of my brother and me. The teacher said my drawing was the best!" As she spoke, she puffed out her chest, looking like she wanted praise.

"Our Lingyun is really amazing." Zhang Zeyang kissed her forehead, feeling sweet inside.

After getting into the car, Lingyun was still excitedly telling stories about her kindergarten days.

She said she had scrambled eggs with tomatoes for lunch and ate all the food on her plate; she also said that the little girl next to her cried during her nap and she patted her back to comfort her.

Zhang Zeyang listened attentively, occasionally responding with, "Yes, our Lingyun is really great."

The setting sun streamed through the car window, casting a warm glow on Lingyun's profile, and her little mouth kept talking nonstop.

The car slowly drove into the villa area. Lingyun finally seemed a little tired from talking, let out a small yawn, leaned against Zhang Zeyang's chest, and her eyes gradually became misty. "Brother," she mumbled sleepily, "tomorrow... I have to go to kindergarten..."

"Okay, I'll go again tomorrow," Zhang Zeyang said softly, slowing down the car.

"Mmm..." the little girl responded, tilted her head, and fell asleep in Zhang Zeyang's arms, a sweet smile on her lips.

Once the car had come to a stop, Zhang Zeyang carefully picked her up. The little one was fast asleep, her little arms still instinctively wrapped around his neck. He looked down at the sleeping face in his arms, his heart filled with an unprecedented sense of satisfaction.
