Rebirth of the Hong Kong Millennium Conglomerate

Chapter 16: Continued Observation

In the early morning restaurant, the aroma of breakfast still lingered in the air. Zhang Zeyang leaned back in his chair. His sister, Zhang Lingyun, had just put down her milk cup. Her fair fingertips held a tissue and gently wiped her lips. There was still a hint of morning languor in her eyes. She glanced at her brother and said with a smile, "Brother, the fried eggs today are really delicious."

A faint smile appeared in Zhang Zeyang's eyes, and he said gently, "If you like it, that's fine. Just tell Uncle Fu in advance what you want to eat next time."

The brother and sister had just finished breakfast when Li Fu came to the restaurant and bowed slightly, saying, "Sir, I have something to report to you. As you instructed, the chef, servants, and gardener I contacted will be arriving one after another this morning. Do you have any specific requirements for them? I'd like to explain things to them in advance."

It was clear that everything had been arranged in advance, and they were just waiting for Zhang Zeyang to make the final decision.

Having followed Zhang Zeyang for the past two days, Li Fu knew that although this young employer seemed gentle, he dared not be negligent and had repeatedly screened candidates in advance to ensure that they had clean backgrounds and clean resumes.

Zhang Zeyang put down his water glass, his fingertips lightly tapping the table. He looked up at Li Fu and said, "Don't rush to finalize the chef's appointment. When he arrives, let him cook a meal on the spot and let him arrange the ingredients. We'll decide after he tastes it and see if it suits his palate."

He paused for a moment, then continued, "As for the servants and gardeners, you can handle that. I trust you to do things well. I only have one request, and it's my only request—keep your mouth shut."

Zhang Zeyang spoke the last three words with exceptional clarity, his gaze fixed on Li Fu: "I don't care about anything else, just keep your mouth shut. Don't ask what you shouldn't ask, don't look at what you shouldn't look at, and don't utter a single word that you shouldn't say. Not a single thing about family matters is allowed to be spread, understand?"

Li Fu's heart skipped a beat, and he quickly bowed and replied, "Mr. Zhang, rest assured, I understand! I will definitely emphasize this requirement to them repeatedly. If anyone dares to violate this taboo, I will not show any mercy and will make them leave immediately. I will also pursue the matter to the end and will not cause you any trouble."

He already knew what was going on, and now that Zhang Zeyang had specifically pointed it out, he had already made up his mind that he would definitely set rules for those people in the future.

"Yes, it's good that you know what's going on." Zhang Zeyang nodded slightly, said nothing more, and waved for Li Fu to go and make the arrangements.

His foundation is not yet stable, and he doesn't have many capable people around him. These new recruits will eventually need time to be assessed. You can't judge a book by its cover, so you have to be careful.

Lingyun is still young, so he must protect her. There can be no mistakes in anything at home, and keeping quiet is the most basic requirement.

Li Fu went directly to the living room and called the chef, servants, and gardener to convey Zhang Zeyang's requirements one by one. He especially emphasized the importance of keeping quiet, repeating it three times. He also specifically instructed the chef to prepare lunch.

Around 10 a.m., the cook, servants, and gardener arrived at the villa one after another.

The chef was a middle-aged man in his forties surnamed Wang. He had a kind smile on his face and carried his own cooking utensils, looking very professional.

The servants were two women in their thirties, while the gardener was a middle-aged man around forty.

Li Fuxian led the three men on a tour of the villa, explaining their respective responsibilities and reiterating the rule of keeping their mouths shut. The three men nodded in agreement, not daring to utter a single objection.

Li Fu then led Chef Wang to the kitchen and instructed him to prepare lunch using the ingredients available at home.

The chef immediately got to work upon entering the kitchen, washing, chopping, and stir-frying vegetables with fluid, efficient movements. Soon, the aroma of food filled the kitchen, making everyone's mouths water.

It was almost noon when Zhang Lingyun came downstairs. She twitched her nose and said with a smile, "Brother, it smells so good."

Zhang Zeyang chuckled upon hearing this and reached out to ruffle her hair: "You'll know once you try it. If it's not to your liking, we can change it."

Before long, the servants brought out the food, which was neatly arranged, looked very appealing, and smelled delicious.

Zhang Zeyang and Zhang Lingyun sat down, picked up their chopsticks, and tasted each dish, finding them perfectly to their liking.

Zhang Lingyun ate with a beaming smile, nodding repeatedly, "Brother, it's delicious!"

Zhang Zeyang was quite satisfied. He put down his chopsticks, looked at Li Fu who was waiting to the side, and said calmly, "Hmm, the taste is good. Let's finalize the chef's appointment. The salary should be according to the standard you mentioned before, so that he can work with peace of mind."

Li Fu replied, "Yes, sir."

At this moment, Zhang Zeyang instructed again: "By the way, go and find another car. It doesn't have to be too expensive, just practical and spacious. It will be convenient for the servants to go out and buy groceries and daily necessities. Make sure all the paperwork is done and get it done as soon as possible."

"Yes, sir, I'll take care of it this afternoon," Li Fu quickly replied.

After noon, the servants began to tidy up the villa according to their assigned tasks, wiping windows, mopping floors, and organizing rooms. They worked quickly and quietly.

The gardener took his tools to the yard, trimming the lawn and tending to the potted plants, tidying up the flowers, trees and shrubs in the yard. The entire villa was quickly transformed, looking clean and tidy everywhere.

As evening fell and the night deepened, the villa was enveloped in a tranquil darkness, with only the living room and the second-floor rooms lit by warm yellow lights.

Zhang Lingyun had already gone back to her room to rest. Zhang Zeyang was sitting in his study with some papers spread out in front of him, looking down at them, when a soft knock came from the door.

"Come in," Zhang Zeyang said without looking up.

The door was gently pushed open, and a man dressed in black casual clothes walked in. He was Zhang Zeyang's squad leader who had stayed at home.

After the squad leader entered, he closed the door behind him and bowed, saying, "Sir."

Zhang Zeyang looked up at him and said, "Speak, what's going on?"

"Yes." The squad leader nodded slightly, took out his notebook, and reported the family situations of Li Fu, Chen Mo, and Su Qing to Zhang Zeyang.

Zhang Zeyang listened quietly, his fingers tapping lightly on the table, his eyes expressionless. Only after the squad leader finished reporting did he slowly speak: "Hmm, it sounds like there are no problems for now."

"Don't let your guard down," Zhang Zeyang continued. "Keep a close eye on them. Whether it's Li Fu, Chen Mo, or Su Qing, remember their every move. Report any slight disturbance, even the slightest abnormality, to me immediately. There can be no negligence, understand?"

"Understood! Mr. Zhang, rest assured, we will keep a 24-hour watch and will not let any abnormality slip by." The squad leader replied, bowed, and then quietly left, gently closing the study door behind him without making a sound.

The study returned to silence. Zhang Zeyang sat at his desk, gazing at the night outside the window with a deep look in his eyes.

Every step I take now feels like walking on thin ice. The people around me, no matter who they are, need time to be tested. Trust cannot be given easily.

The next ten days or so passed peacefully and orderly. The servants were diligent and efficient, keeping the villa in perfect order, and the meals were also to their liking.

While having people secretly observe the movements of those around him, Zhang Zeyang wrote down some plans and continued writing short stories. Occasionally, he would accompany his younger sister, Zhang Lingyun, out for a walk to relax. His life was relatively peaceful.

During this period, the team leader at home reported the situation on time every day. Li Fu was conscientious and diligent, and Chen Mo and Su Qing showed no abnormalities. Everything was under Zhang Zeyang's control.

More than ten days passed in the blink of an eye. On this morning, the sun was shining brightly, and Chen Mo and Su Qing arrived together at the hillside villa in Repulse Bay.

Both men were carrying briefcases. After entering the house, Li Fu led them to the living room.

Zhang Zeyang was sitting on the sofa in the living room drinking tea. When he saw the two of them come in, he raised his hand to signal them to sit down. The servants quickly brought over two cups of hot tea.

"Mr. Zhang," Chen Mo and Su Qing said in unison, bowing slightly in greeting.

"Sit down. How did things go?" Zhang Zeyang put down his teacup, his gaze falling on the two of them, his tone calm.

Chen Mo spoke first, saying, "Mr. Zhang, everything regarding the offshore company has been completed. All the formalities are in order, and we have also brought the shareholding documents. Please take a look." As he spoke, he took out a neatly arranged stack of documents from his briefcase and handed them to Zhang Zeyang with both hands.

Zhang Zeyang picked up the document, glanced at the terms and information, and after confirming that everything was correct, closed the document and placed it on the coffee table beside him, a hint of satisfaction in his eyes: "Hmm, well done, thank you for your hard work."

Chen Mo and Su Qing said at the same time, "This is all we should do, it's no trouble at all."

Then Chen Mo said, "I've spent over a million of the money you gave me, and I still have over three million left." As he spoke, Chen Mo prepared to hand the money over to Zhang Zeyang.

Zhang Zeyang waved his hand and said, "Keep the money for now. You haven't had a proper rest these past ten days. You've worked hard. I'll give you two days off. Take a good rest these two days, and then come back to see me. I have a new task for you."

Upon hearing this, Chen Mo and Su Qing quickly stood up to express their gratitude: "Thank you, Mr. Zhang!"

"Alright, if there's nothing else, you can go back and rest." Zhang Zeyang waved his hand casually.

"Then we'll take our leave, Mr. Zhang." The two bowed again, picked up their briefcases, and turned to leave the villa.

Not long after Chen Mo and Su Qing left, the squad leader strode in, still with that cold and stern expression, and bowed, saying, "Sir."

Zhang Zeyang looked up at him, knowing his purpose without asking, and then had the squad leader follow him to the study. Once there, Zhang Zeyang said casually, "How have Chen Mo and Su Qing been doing these past ten days?"

"Reporting to Mr. Zhang, we have been monitoring the two of them. In the past ten days or so, they have not contacted any suspicious persons, nor have they leaked any information to the outside world. They have also had no unusual interactions in private. There is absolutely no problem." The squad leader reported the results of his observations over the past ten days.

Upon hearing this, a knowing glint flashed in Zhang Zeyang's eyes, and he slowly said, "Yes, I understand. It's good that there are no problems for now."

He knew in his heart that although there were no problems for the next ten days or so, he could not let his guard down.

"Don't let your guard down either," Zhang Zeyang looked up at the squad leader, "keep an eye on those two. Report any unusual activity immediately. Don't be careless."

"Yes, sir! Rest assured, we will keep a close watch and will not let you down." The squad leader replied, bowed, and then left.

Silence returned to the study. Zhang Zeyang picked up the shareholding documents. The offshore company matter was settled; it was time to set sail.
