Chapter 39 Breaking the Ice
Su Yu coughed and cleared his throat.
"Don't record yet, let me get into the swing of things first."
Hearing him say that, Xiao Zhou put down his phone, his eyes filled with doubt: No, is Brother Yu reliable or not?
Although the lyrics look plausible and the sheet music is full, songwriting is not something that just anyone can do well.
Su Yu didn't care what she thought.
He held the guitar close, placed his fingers on the strings, closed his eyes, and went over the song in his mind several times from beginning to end.
He then took a deep breath and slowly began to speak.
The prelude played for a short while, and his fingers plucked the strings, producing a series of crisp harmonies, carrying a touch of gentle, impatient emotion.
Then he spoke.
When the first sentence came out, Xiao Zhou thought it was so-so, not bad at all.
But when he sang the chorus, "I want to see you, I only want to see you, in the future and in the past, I only want to see you," Xiao Zhou's expression was one of utter disbelief; she seemed to have been put on pause.
She simply couldn't connect the man in front of her with the sincere and affectionate voice she knew before, Su Yu.
After finishing the song, Su Yu brought back the last note, and the guitar music slowly faded away.
He looked up and found that Xiao Zhou no longer had that nonchalant expression; instead, he wore an undisguised look of shock.
"Brother Yu, you're amazing! This song is so good! I'll never make fun of you again!" Xiao Zhou blurted out.
Su Yu was quite satisfied with her reaction, but when he heard the last sentence, the smile on his face instantly froze, and his face darkened.
"You're still badmouthing me behind my back? Fine, fine, I'll call Sister Huo right now and have her dock your bonus!"
"Brother Yu, no! I was just kidding!"
Xiao Zhou's hands were already clasped together and raised above his head uncontrollably, afraid that Su Yu would actually take out his phone and call Sister Huo, then this month's hard-earned money would really be wasted.
Seeing that his assistant's attitude of admitting her mistake was sincere enough, Su Yu decided not to hold it against her, since she was still useful to him. He glanced down at the phone in Xiao Zhou's hand.
"Is it finished recording?"
Xiao Zhou glanced down at his phone screen—it was locked.
"Sorry, Brother Yu, I didn't turn on the recording just now..."
She shrank back, cautiously raised her eyelids to glance at Su Yu, and said in a softer voice, "Why don't you sing it again?"
Su Yu stared at her for a long time, so angry that he didn't know what to say. In the end, he could only sigh helplessly.
Another day of being driven crazy by my dog assistant.
"Try it again. If you can't record it this time, I'll really deduct your bonus."
He picked up his guitar again and sang it a cappella once more.
This time, Xiao Zhou didn't dare to be careless. She held the phone steadily with both hands, holding her breath the whole time, until Su Yu finished playing the last chord, and then she breathed a sigh of relief.
"It's recorded this time! That's great!" She proudly held up her phone to Su Yu.
After watching the replay and confirming there were no problems, Su Yu asked Xiao Zhou to send him the video.
He opened WeChat, tapped on Tian Xiwei's chat window, and hovered his finger over the send button for a moment.
She hasn't replied to any of his messages these past few days, but once this video is released, he'll probably know her attitude. If she doesn't even want to watch it, then he doesn't know what else he can do.
Xiao Zhou peeked over from the side, and the two of them stared at the screen together.
"Do you think this is even useful?" Su Yu couldn't help but ask again.
Xiao Zhou thought for a moment and said, "Why not give it a try? Anyway, Sister Tian isn't talking to you anymore, so how much worse can it get?"
Su Yu looked at his chat history with Xiao Tian, and it was indeed true.
So he nodded, sent the video directly, hesitated for a moment, and then added a sentence below the video: "I wrote a song for you, do you want to listen to it?"
The message was sent out amidst their expectant gazes.
Ten minutes later, the other party still hadn't replied.
It was still the same after half an hour.
"I told you those things were unreliable. Forget it, go back to sleep."
Su Yu tossed his phone onto the bedside table and flopped onto the bed.
Sure enough, I shouldn't have trusted Xiao Zhou, that armchair strategist who only knew how to talk the talk.
However, he didn't take it too seriously. After all, they would be staying on set for more than a month, and there would be a chance to coax Tian Xiwei back. Besides, Tian Xiwei hadn't blocked him, had she?
Let's take it slow.
The next morning, Su Yu ran into Tian Xiwei again downstairs at the hotel.
She stepped out of the elevator, wearing a light blue sweatshirt that looked quite nice.
He nodded to her as usual, as a greeting. He had gotten used to the silence of the past few days and didn't expect her to have any particularly strong reaction.
When Tian Xiwei saw him, she paused for a moment.
Instead of simply turning her head and walking past him as she had done before, she stood still for a moment, then took the initiative to walk towards Su Yu.
"Did you write that song yourself last night?"
Su Yu was stunned for a moment.
This was the first time in the past few days that Tian Xiwei had taken the initiative to talk to him.
"Yes, it's for you. What do you think? Does it sound good?"
Tian Xiwei gave him a deep look.
"not bad."
After saying that, she turned and left.
Su Yu watched her figure disappear at the restaurant entrance, still standing in the lobby, not yet able to react.
Xiao Zhou suddenly appeared out of nowhere, so excited he almost jumped up: "Say something! Did it work?! Brother Yu, you see, all the things I taught you weren't for nothing!"
"No, your method actually works?"
Su Yu leaned against the wall next to the elevator and couldn't help but sigh.
He originally thought that Xiao Zhou's Korean drama tropes were complete nonsense, but he didn't expect that this seemingly unreliable method would actually help.
After arriving at the film set, Tian Xiwei no longer completely ignored him like she had a few days before.
When they bumped into each other in the dressing room, she would say "Good morning" to him, though her tone was still indifferent.
Before the director yelled "Action," she didn't try to hide from him outside the camera's view, and the two of them returned to the distance they had before their cold war.
Although there's still a long way to go before they return to that clingy state they were in before, Su Yu feels that it won't be long before the two of them go back to their old relationship.
Actually, Tian Xiwei has been quite conflicted these past few days.
On the one hand, she felt that Su Yu might be involved with other people. After all, the unfamiliar fragrance she smelled on Su Yu that day was real, and she felt suffocated whenever she thought about it.
On the other hand, she really couldn't bear to part with Su Yu.
After all, this was just her speculation. In the past few days, apart from keeping in touch, Su Yu had not taken any other actions, neither apologizing nor admitting his mistakes.
Sometimes she even wondered if she had really misunderstood Su Yu that day.
This matter has been draining her energy. On the one hand, she doesn't want to be a fool who gets fooled, but on the other hand, she's afraid that she'll miss out on something important because of her impulsiveness.
Until last night.
She had already turned off the lights and lay down when a WeChat notification sounded in her ear.
She didn't open it immediately, but thought about it in the dark for a while before finally picking up her phone and seeing the video Su Yu had sent in the chat box.
The video was captioned: "I wrote a song for you, do you want to listen to it?"
She opened the video, and Su Yu's clear voice came through the phone.
He sat in a chair, without stage lights or professional recording equipment, only a guitar, his whole being enveloped in the warm yellow glow cast by the hotel lights.
When she heard Su Yu sing the line, "I want to see you, I only want to see you, in the future and in the past, I only want to see you," she almost couldn't hold back her tears.
Finally, with red eyes, she said "liar" fiercely, and then played the video over and over again from beginning to end.
Tian Xiwei doesn't know how many times she's watched this video.
After watching the video, she opened her chat window with Su Yu, typed a few words, then deleted them; she typed again, then deleted again.
Finally, in a fit of pique, she slammed her phone onto the bedside table, turned off the light, and muttered to the ceiling, "Su Yu, you're really something."
She didn't reply to Su Yu, but she saved the video to her phone.
