Ancient tomb excavation traces

Chapter 106 The Whip Field

(Chapter 106 is on the 16th, a programmer's birthday. Happy birthday to myself.)

In the dim light, a pale, swaying body, a bald head with a few strands of baby hair stuck together, cloudy eyes, messy teeth, and a breath that seemed to come from hell... even the clerk and the young Taoist priest nervously took two steps back.

My eyes widened in disbelief. The scariest thing in horror movies isn't the long-haired, white-clad female ghost, but the infants. It's said their resentment surpasses all other ghosts, but are they really infants? The bizarre way they're disemboweled, the powerful attacks, the wailing screams—it's all utterly absurd.

I retreated in horror, as several strange infants walked past the light filtering through the trees overhead. Although the light didn't shine directly on them, it was enough for us to see them clearly.

As we had seen before, the strange infants had wrinkles on their bodies, and on those wrinkles were some old bloodstains and some membrane-like things attached to them. Their noses kept twitching, as if they were looking for our scent.

They can't see us? A chill ran down my spine. According to the young Taoist priest, they locate us by the yang energy we possess, which might be even more terrifying than their ability to see us. Even if we hide now, we can't escape their pursuit. This thought filled me with despair.

I swallowed hard, wanting to ask the young Taoist what to do. But the strange infant hadn't launched an attack yet, so no one dared to make a move, lest they cause chaos.

I stared in horror at the strange infants. The skin stuck to their folds looked familiar. If I wasn't mistaken, these should be the outer layer of the meat dumplings that Bao Cai had seen earlier, which were the eggs I had just seen. These infants had evolved from inside the egg membrane.

Such things absolutely do not exist in our time, but it was different in ancient times. Some mysterious and ancient arts, such as Gu poison, witchcraft, and soul-summoning techniques, accumulated countless insidious powers and used countless evil methods to accomplish them. Therefore, these infants might also be the insidious masterpieces of the ancients. Just as Qiuyue mentioned earlier, the Loulan people had relatively short lifespans, so they had a fanatical genital worship, and the "Little River Princess Tomb" discovered in our time has this prominent symbolic feature.

If it were truly some kind of evil masterpiece, that would be even more terrifying. My legs were trembling. Suddenly, Bajian behind me murmured, "This... why does the skin on this thing look so familiar? It seems... it seems like I've seen it inside the Nine-Story Pagoda before..."

Bajian's reminder startled me. My mind suddenly went blank, as if someone had suddenly enlightened me. I had thought that slightly transparent skin looked familiar before. Upon closer inspection, wasn't it the meat dumpling that had jumped out of the demon's tower wall? Although the horns that jumped out were different, the outer egg layer was the same.

Ancient paintings often feature symbolism. For example, a crane might be depicted as a beautiful woman. I now suspect that the hairy worms that sprang out of the fleshy mass in the tower are these strange infants.

Thinking about it, I shuddered. Looking back, we were almost touching the huge tree trunk. The clerk was looking for a suitable escape route, but the trees along this path were very close together. If everyone tried to run together in a short time, there would definitely be pushing and shoving, making the situation even more chaotic.

We are extremely anxious right now, it's hard to describe. No matter which of these strange infants pounces on us, we can't escape, because there are too many of them. If one pounces on us, the others will swarm us.

The treasurer couldn't wait any longer. He stopped retreating. I knew he was eager to find the treasure and didn't want to waste any more time, but acting rashly now would disrupt everything. I parted a vine and pulled him over: "Treasurer, don't be impulsive. If we move now, the situation will become tense."

But Ku Shi wouldn't listen to me. He glanced at me disdainfully and said, "Do you think we can escape this by not attacking first? These things can climb trees, and they're much faster than you and me." With that, he waved his hand and cut off a vine in front of him, intending to fight to the death.

During military training before, we crawled through barbed wire fences, but at least that was on flat ground. Now, however, the place we're in is a disaster. It's a rugged path of tree roots, not only rough and uncomfortable, but it also takes several times more energy than on flat ground. Plus, the old vines are of varying lengths; the shorter ones can't hit us, but the longer ones whip our backs. Luckily, I'm wearing leather, so I'm not completely naked from the whipping.

But Qiuyue was in an awkward situation. A young woman had been inexplicably tortured, and her sleeves had been whipped open in several places. Luckily, she was wearing an impenetrable leather jacket (used for hiding weapons in doors), otherwise her delicate skin would have been torn to shreds.

Looking at Bao Cai in front of me, the whip had struck his buttocks. He was pulling at his pants, trying his best not to expose his bare bottom, while screaming "Ouch..." The screams echoed Ba Jian's curses, rising and falling like brothers in distress being tortured together in an ancient prison.

Unlucky people are always embarrassed, while handsome and aloof people seem to be completely unrelated to these words. The little Taoist priest did not lie on the ground; he crawled into the cracks in the tree roots, and the Master Ku followed him in. Now, only a few of us poor souls are left to suffer.

While we screamed in agony, the strange infants also suffered. Their intelligence seemed to be limited to mechanically hunting people, and they didn't know how to hide at all. Several of them were pulled away in one go.

The scene was quite satisfying. I gritted my teeth. The little Taoist priest called to me from the gap in the tree, telling me to hide quickly. I was too lazy to climb up in such a mess. I got up and took three steps at a time, falling right in front of the gap where the little Taoist priest was. The fall made my vision blurry and I felt a tightness in my chest. If Master Ku hadn't pulled me down, I would have been whipped by the old vine coming at me.

I was panting heavily. I hadn't expected the gap in the tree root to be so large, big enough for several people to fit inside. We peeked out and looked at Bajian, Baocai, and Qiuyue. The three of them, in their panic, also found a gap in the tree root and crawled inside. Seeing that they were temporarily safe, I breathed a sigh of relief.

The screams outside were deafening. The monstrous infants had been struck squarely by the old vine, but these disgusting creatures weren't so easily killed. Some of the infants, covered in wounds, struggled to their feet. Some wriggled on the ground. Others, their faces contorted, staggered towards us.

The strange baby closest to us knelt on the ground in a creepy manner. To my astonishment, its eyes moved strangely, like a lizard's. After the movement, its whitish pupils turned amber yellow...

Suddenly, it started convulsing like it was having an epileptic seizure. I remember the round-bellied female corpse had also been in this state when she was about to give birth to these strange babies.

My heart skipped a beat, and I turned my gaze to the young Taoist priest beside me, saying, "Its eyes have changed. Is it about to advance again?" (To be continued.)

I like tomb raiding.
