Warhammer 40: Saviors Emerging from the Bottom
Chapter 66 The Too Quiet Nest
The spire and the nest are one.
But two thousand years ago, a nobleman who seized the position of governor by virtue of his family's great power wanted to distinguish his family from other nobles.
He signed a series of modification agreements with the Cult of Mechanics, completely separating the two originally connected parts.
This was both a defensive necessity, to prevent anyone from imitating him by using force to overthrow the governor's rule.
At the same time, it also highlights their uniqueness.
To proclaim to the people of this planet that governors are not like ordinary nobles; they should be high above, looking down upon the entire world.
But the governor died mysteriously not long after signing the redevelopment agreement, and his family, who had lived in Top Nest for decades, were driven out by other families.
The succeeding family continued the contract with the Mechanicus and completed the separation of the Upper Nest and the Top Nest.
As it turns out, this modification did have some effect.
After the project is completed, few people can forcefully pry open the top gate and take the governor's seat; the change of power often begins from within.
But neither the proposer nor the successor of this project could have imagined it.
Thousands of years from now, a group of junkyard workers from the lower lair will be carrying shoddy firearms produced in factories and wearing tattered military boots.
Stepping onto this place, a place only the most powerful people on this planet are allowed to set foot in.
The governor, high above and looking down on the world, was powerless to do anything about it and could only watch helplessly.
But she didn't seem to be in a hurry, neither taking the Governor's Mansion's private space elevator to the Starport to escape to other Imperial worlds.
They did not immediately mobilize the remaining troops for a desperate resistance.
She simply stayed there, waiting quietly.
It was eerily quiet.
"We've finally arrived."
Xiao Yi, who was leaning halfway out of the Leman Ross tank, looked at the giant manor shrouded in a semi-circular energy shield, a hint of wariness in his eyes.
His intuition told him that something dangerous was waiting inside.
"You felt it too?"
"That's right, it's the nauseating stench of the Chaos God. The whole mansion has a very strange feel to it, and there's probably something terrifying waiting for us inside."
Kalan, standing beside him, unconsciously gripped his explosive pistol tighter. Astartes' keen intuition for war was constantly tugging at his nerves; a fierce battle was about to begin.
After sending Friedrich to the Mars Explorer, Karan and his two companions did not remain idle.
Leading the vanguard, along with Friedrich's Papacy and a portion of the Starport forces still loyal to the Emperor, they used the powerful firepower of the Gothic-class cruisers to continuously seize key control points in Starport.
The sudden attack on the port by the docked mechanized warships was something no one had expected.
While the Star Harbor management was still in a daze, they had already lost the best time to counterattack.
After several attempts to thwart resistance, they realized they were no match for the overwhelming firepower of the Mechanicus Guardians and were forced to surrender.
In fact, what made them give up resistance was the appearance of Astartes; the Imperial Angels would never do anything against the Emperor's will.
There must be something wrong with the governor.
Although the result was correct, their absurd behavior of failing to distinguish between loyalists and Chaos rebels still drew a merciless reprimand from Kalan.
This is not their fault; even the nobles might not be able to distinguish between the loyalists and the rebels of Astartes.
Unless they undergo severe mutations, they all look pretty much the same, at least to ordinary people.
In just three days, Karan and his team returned to the space elevator that had previously taken them to Starport.
Just as he was preparing to lead his troops in a counterattack on Shangchao, he happened to run into the troops led by Xiao Yi.
Most of Karan's men were wearing the uniforms of the Starport garrison, so when Xiao Yi's soldiers saw them again, they mistook them for reinforcements called for by the nobles.
If he and his two combat comrades hadn't appeared in time, a fierce melee might have broken out between the two sides.
After the misunderstanding was cleared up, the two sides joined forces and arrived at the outskirts of the Governor's Mansion.
The tension between Xiao Yi and Kalan was transmitted to the other soldiers around them. The soldiers, who originally thought they could easily take down the last obstacle, found that things seemed to be different from what they had expected.
Anything that can make both the Commander and the Imperial Angels take a serious look at the same time is no small matter.
Even though the stars had set, the Governor's Mansion was still as bright as day, a stark contrast to the dim lighting in Zhongchao and Xiachao.
Polished terracotta steel panels, combined with various expensive ornaments, form a massive Gothic building, with the imperial double-headed eagle and the deeds of past governors inscribed on the upper exterior wall.
The existence of each brick in the wall silently proclaims the ruler's authority.
Xiao Yi tapped the gun emplacement with his hand, signaling the driver to move forward.
The roar of the Leman Rustam engine echoed throughout the entire top nest.
After driving about 100 meters, a cold, emotionless voice rang in everyone's ears: "Dangerous target is approaching. Prepare for counterattack..."
Before the alarm system's voice could finish broadcasting, Xiao Yi shot out a ghostly green arc of electricity to forcibly silence it. The already tense governor's mansion guards immediately raised their weapons upon seeing this.
Even though they were gripped by fear, these soldiers, who had served the governor for generations, did not hesitate to open fire.
But before the bullets had flown more than a few meters, they turned and struck their bodies again.
Just as Karan was preparing to launch a bomb in retaliation, he saw this somewhat strange scene and subconsciously turned his gaze to Xiao Yi.
He knew that the other party could do things beyond human comprehension through psychic powers.
But the strength he is showing now has completely exceeded the range of normal psychic.
Xiao Yi ignored Astartes' somewhat wary gaze, knowing exactly what the other was afraid of.
He was honestly scared that his psionic powers were out of control.
Therefore, after discovering that he could master the Star God's abilities, Xiao Yi gradually gave up psionic power.
Aside from sensing the presence of enemies and checking the chaotic corruption of his soul, he rarely uses the power from the warp.
The result was quite obvious: the whispers that used to appear in his ear from time to time completely disappeared.
I don't dream about weird or strange things when I sleep at night.
The tracks left a yellow mark on the floor made of a special alloy. As Leman Rustank approached, an oval gate with a diameter of 10m opened on the semi-circular energy shield.
The group crossed the gate and saw a sight they could not see from the lower nest.
In front of the Governor's Palace, rare crops cultivated by the nearby Garden World are planted.
The vibrant colors made the soldiers, including Redmond, begin to doubt their own eyes.
"These things should be worth a lot of money if we take them back."
"What's so valuable about a bunch of green plants?"
Xiao Yi subconsciously replied, but a special force field seemed to shield his spiritual perception. No matter how hard he tried, all he could "see" was pitch black.
As expected of a sanctuary built using the resources of the entire planet, it seems I'll have to say goodbye to my psionic radar for a while.
Just as Xiao Yi was pondering, a strange creature that looked like a combination of a seahorse and a scorpion suddenly sprang out from the flower bed next to him and began a massacre among the crowd.
