Warhammer 40: Saviors Emerging from the Bottom
Chapter 4 The Unopenable Door
After tens of thousands of years of evolution and genetic modification, modern humans are practically superhuman compared to those of the 2K era. Even carrying tens of kilograms of equipment, Matthias and his companions can still run continuously for two days.
Aside from stopping every twelve Terra hours to relieve their physiological needs, they have almost no time to rest.
Arya, who looked the thinnest in the group, even said that this was much easier than when they first entered the bottom nest, when they had to be constantly on guard against mutant attacks and didn't even have time to eat or go to the toilet.
Xiao Yi was puzzled by Aria's sudden change in attitude. She had been avoiding him not long ago, but now she was taking the initiative to come and chat with him.
But in any case, this is a good start. From her words, Xiao Yi also learned his position in the eyes of the others: an agent from Zhen Dan.
The origin of the name "Zhendan" is quite complex. Some believe it refers to a powerful nation that originated in ancient Terra, others believe it refers to a glorious human civilization, and still others believe that Zhendan is actually the name of a spaceship.
To date, there is no unified explanation for the origin of the word "Zhendan," but it is certain that the people of Zhendan have a long history.
Long before the birth of the human empire, they had already begun their journey to conquer the Milky Way. Even in the Far Eastern Starfield, located on the border of the empire, there were still many planets ruled by the Saurian people.
With black hair, black eyes, and yellow skin, Xiao Yi has a strange name consisting of two bytes and speaks an ancient language that is completely different from High Gothic. Apart from not having recorded history using strange blocky characters, Xiao Yi perfectly fits the stereotypes that Aria and the others have about the people of Zhen Dan.
The reason why he is considered a special agent is not only because of his obvious characteristics and strong strength, but also because he is the governor of the neighboring planet who has been trying to annex Bakda for twenty years. That guy named Liu Yi is also a Cinnamon.
Matthias and the others' speculations left Xiao Yi speechless.
What idiot would send a highly trained agent to such a godforsaken place as the enemy's base? Shouldn't they be sabotaging important enemy buildings or assassinating key targets?
And what can one person do?
Most importantly, shouldn't the first reaction to an agent who could potentially threaten the Bakda hive be to kill them?
So what's the situation now?
As for the existence of the space aliens, it didn't surprise Xiao Yi too much. The humans scattered in the Milky Way were all people who escaped from Earth back then, so it was normal for them to encounter some familiar things.
After thinking for a long time without figuring it out, Xiao Yi finally voiced his question.
Just as Aria was about to speak after a moment of thought, Matthias suddenly interrupted, "Compared to the ambitious believers of the God-Emperor, the evil god followers of the Deep Nest pose a greater threat. Once they develop, several surrounding planets could fall."
"We should have arrived by now. I never imagined that such a place still exists in the bottom nest."
Everyone stopped and looked at the bottom nest gate, which had blended into the surrounding environment, several hundred meters away.
"How do I activate the gate?" Xiao Yi stretched out his finger and shot out a green arc of electricity, forcibly waking up B-59, which was in a dormant state.
With his new brain, he possessed an astonishing talent for languages, mastering almost all of the Low Gothic language spoken by Matthias and his companions in just three Terra days.
With the need for translation no longer required, B-59 entered hibernation again.
Besides the fact that this guy talks a lot and is a bit annoying, another important reason is that the energy required for the normal operation of B-59 is entirely supplied by Xiao Yi. If it were to be on 24 hours a day, he would not be able to handle it.
A dozen seconds later, B-59, having finished loading the data, answered Xiao Yi's question in a completely emotionless, mechanically synthesized voice.
"The control panel for the main gate should be on the right side. I just need to plug my data transmission device into it."
What is the probability that the gate will start normally?
"Seventeen percent. If the main door can't be opened, we'll have to climb out through the ventilation shaft above."
"A vent?"
"That's right, some of the channels in the bottom nest are the same as those in the lower nest."
A soldier who had come from the lower hive nodded in agreement, "Every year, the lower hive encounters mutants crawling out of the ventilation ducts."
"If that's the case, why not just block them off with wire mesh or something similar at the ventilation openings?"
"We tried, but it didn't work. Some mutants would use stomach acid or something to break the wire mesh. Anyway, not many escape from the ventilation ducts each year, so we just gave up."
"In that case, let's make our move." Xiao Yi looked at the simple camp in front of the bottom nest gate. It was a small mutant tribe, and it seemed that they had been living there for a long time.
After checking their equipment and offering a pre-battle prayer, Xiao Yi and his team launched an attack on the mutant tribe. The entire process was incredibly smooth, with not a single mutant daring to stand in their way.
Soon, the group rushed to the room where the bottom hive gate control panel was located, where a male mutant who looked stronger than the other mutants was reproducing with his mate.
Enraged by the sudden appearance of humans who were interrupting his plans, the male mutant pounced on them.
"That's fucking disgusting." Xiao Yi casually swung his power sword, which craved blood, and cut the male mutant in two. His mate was shot in the head by Matthias.
"Throw this body out to intimidate those mutants. Knowing these guys as I do, they'll leave this place on their own soon enough."
Xiao Yi sheathed his power sword and inserted B-59's into the control panel that operated the gate switch.
After a long period of hibernation, the Thinker was restarted. Various incomprehensible codes flashed rapidly on the big screen, accompanied by the hum of the radiator. B-59 successfully took control of the gate.
"How is it? Can you open it?"
"The system starts up normally without any problems, but someone has blocked the passage at the back. Now we have no choice but to climb out through the ventilation duct. According to the remaining information, a mutant riot occurred in the Bottom Nest a long time ago. To prevent the riot from spreading to other areas, the governor at the time ordered the place to be abandoned."
"Do you have a floor plan of the ventilation ducts or something?" Xiao Yi didn't want to crawl around in the ducts like a mouse, trying and making mistakes everywhere.
"have."
B-59 retrieved the design drawings of nearby ventilation ducts and marked one of them with a red line.
"This ventilation duct connects directly to the residential area below the nest."
"It seems this is the only way."
"My memory is full, I need to clean it up. I can leave in about five minutes."
After saying that, B-59 began its work.
"Your servo skull is a bit special. Other Mechanicus priests' servo skulls don't talk much; they just passively execute commands."
Matthias's words reminded Xiao Yi that B-59 was indeed somewhat special. The more you interacted with it, the more you would find that this guy had emotions just like a human.
The fact that a creature with a brain full of circuits and chips can have emotions like a human can only be explained by one other reason: it could be an artificial intelligence left behind by the human scientists who created it to protect themselves.
Given the current attitude of the human empire towards artificial intelligence, it's best to keep this matter confidential.
"This is the latest servo skull, which has better interactivity, but unfortunately the cost is too high to mass-produce."
"Really? That's such a pity."
"My servo skull was slightly damaged before, and I don't know if the Mechanicus priests here can repair it."
"It should be fine..."
The discussion about the special characteristics of the B-59 was thus steered off course by Xiao Yi.
