Warhammer 40: Saviors Emerging from the Bottom
Chapter 28 After the War
Xiao Yi felt as if he were floating aimlessly in the wastewater of the bottom nest. Everything around him was swallowed by darkness, and the silence was somewhat eerie. However, the occasional whispers warned him that man-eating monsters were lurking on the shore.
If he succumbs to temptation and climbs ashore according to their ideas, he will be completely devoured, leaving not even a trace.
"I'm so tired, I don't want to move at all. Can't you guys just shut up?"
After drifting for an unknown amount of time, a gap suddenly appeared in the space above, and a faint light squeezed through it.
Slowly, the surrounding darkness began to collapse, and a blurry figure moved continuously in the blue and white.
Upon closer inspection, it was a soldier in protective gear, busy with something at the medicine station.
"The person under guardianship has regained consciousness."
Upon hearing the prompt from the servo skull, the pharmacist immediately put down the half-prepared nutrient solution in his hand and turned to look at his patient.
"My lord, you're awake." His tone was extremely humble, as if he were speaking to a noble lord.
"Is this an Imperial Army hospital?"
"It's just a simple first aid station. After you fell unconscious, Lieutenant General Lancelot personally brought you here and instructed me to take good care of you."
"What's your name?"
"Leo Cooper, Lord Lancelot's personal apothecary, please lie down so I can give you another physical examination."
After confirming that he could kill the guy in front of him in a second, Xiao Yi looked up and waited for the other party to examine him.
A strange instrument loaded with wet parts scanned Xiao Yi back and forth, followed by some simple checks.
"The final step requires a blood test, but our needles can't penetrate the tube. Could you please do us the trouble of collecting a drop of blood yourself?"
As he spoke, the pharmacist pointed somewhat awkwardly to several bent syringes on the dispensing table. The thickest of them was about the same size as Xiao Yi's little finger, which could be considered a sharp instrument.
Before he could answer, they heard hurried footsteps outside the ambulance station.
"Xiao Yi, how are you feeling right now?"
The curtain used to block the view was ripped open, and Aria, who was at the front, lunged forward towards Xiao Yi.
Still somewhat dazed, Xiao Yi instinctively used his psionic energy to stop Aria in mid-air when he saw her rushing towards him. The two stared at each other, creating an awkward atmosphere in the rescue station.
Once he realized what was happening, Xiao Yi gently put Aria down.
"Um, me, this..."
Just as the two were struggling with their language and didn't know how to greet each other, Charles and Redmond followed them in.
"I thought you were going to die?"
Redmond gave Charles a hard elbow, signaling him not to talk nonsense if he couldn't speak properly.
"Where did Matthias and Friedrich go?"
"The priest is spreading the Emperor's teachings in the military camp. The red-robed oil guy who always carries an axe has been dragged to work by another oil guy. After so many days of fighting, many cannons and tanks in the Imperial army have been damaged."
"How are you feeling now?"
"It's alright. Apart from being a little sleepy, there are no other problems. But I've already slept for so many days. If I keep sleeping, it might not be good for my health."
Xiao Yi stretched out his hand and moved his wrist, trying to reactivate his drowsy body in this way.
"The entire military camp is now praising your heroic deeds of defeating Ivan single-handedly and ending this war. After everything is over, the governor will probably award you a medal of honor, and you will win the heart of a noble lady. Your future of reaching the pinnacle of life is just around the corner."
"Don't forget about us brothers when the time comes."
Redmond was clearly excited, talking much more than usual. Perhaps it was because, with the burden lifted off his shoulders, he finally had the chance to be himself again.
However, these words, which were clearly meant to be a joke, did not make everyone laugh. For some reason, Aria felt a surge of anger in her chest, which she desperately needed to release.
Redmond was a perfect target. The already bent syringe on the dispensing station was straightened by an invisible force and turned to pierce Redmond's buttocks.
"Ah! What is this?" Redmond reached behind him and found a blood-stained needle in his hand.
He forced the wound back despite the pain, and gasps of shock filled the first-aid station. Fortunately, it was just a small wound that would scab over in a while.
Seeing the somewhat distorted expression on the other person's face, Aria suppressed a laugh and said, "That was so careless."
"How did this thing manage to poke me from so far away?"
"I don't know, it couldn't have just run into it, could it?"
The pharmacist, who was silently watching all this, was puzzled as to where the needle was coming from.
Looking at the group of guys in front of him, Xiao Yi felt much better. He got up and sat on the bed, asking the question that was currently his biggest concern.
"How's the situation on the battlefield?"
Normally, confidential matters such as the battlefield situation are not easily revealed to outsiders.
However, Charles and his companions, as companions of war heroes, were an exception, partly due to Charles's high alcohol tolerance and strong social skills.
After Xiao Yi fell into a coma, Lancelot led the Imperial army to completely destroy the strongest resistance force in the Lower Nest. Hundreds of thousands of plague zombies were purified by flames. The excessive oxygen consumed by the burning even made it difficult for the surrounding Imperial soldiers to breathe.
Of course, there were some troubles along the way. The plague left by the plague carrier around the summoning ritual circle infected two careless young men, turning them into plague carriers.
Fortunately, Arya discovered the corruption in their souls in time, preventing an even more powerful plague from spreading.
The infected, now leaderless, escaped while the Imperial army was clearing out the plague zombies. Lancelot and his men's main objective now is to completely eliminate these creatures.
Besides the followers of Nurgle, the mutants who crawl out of the bottom hive have also become a major headache for the Imperial army. These extreme militants will indiscriminately attack every army they encounter.
Recent intelligence suggests that some surviving humans may have been influenced and joined their ranks.
Fortunately, the number of mutants was not large, and their elite forces had been almost completely exhausted in the battle against the infected, so they did not tie down too many Imperial troops.
Half a day ago, a force set off for the location of the bottom hive gate, preparing to temporarily seal the passage between the bottom hive and the lower hive to prevent the mutants from continuing their invasion.
In addition, there are a series of problems involving thugs, robbers, and gangs that the Imperial Army needs to deal with. In short, everyone is quite busy right now. Even Charles and Redmond have been appointed as recruit training officers, responsible for training newly enlisted recruits.
"We can finally leave this boring place."
Perhaps sensing that Charles's seemingly random statement might confuse Xiao Yi, Redmond added, "Lancelot has clearly stated his intention to recruit you into the army. If nothing unexpected happens, our new recruits are prepared for you, and the vast majority of them come from our previous sanctuary."
Charles nodded in agreement.
"Besides stabilizing morale and boosting the troops, Brigadier General Lancelot may also have intended to bind you to this place. How could a hero leave at the most critical moment?"
"Now he has almost no one to rely on. Even Robert, the company commander of the first company of the first regiment who was known by the soldiers as someone who just loafed around all day, has been promoted to regimental commander."
"Huh? What did you say that guy's name was?"
"Robert, I heard that his parents named him that because they admired Robert Guilliman, the son of a great emperor."
Charles was also taken aback. Robert, a name that sounded quite ordinary tens of thousands of years ago, was not common in the current empire, after all, it represented an imperial heir.
"I think you'd better meet with Brigadier General Lancelot. Whether you stay or leave, there needs to be a decision."
