Weird Rules: I'm so handsome, they all want to seduce me.
Chapter 8 "Best Friends, Best Sisters"
The archive room door closed behind me, cutting off even the last bit of light from my cell phone.
Su Xiaobai stood in the dark corridor, holding the list and the brown paper bag in her arms.
He looked in the direction where Jiang Hongyi's spirit had dissipated, then turned to look at the lonely outline of the old school building under the moonlight outside the window.
"Okay, I'll go right away."
He lifted his foot and walked away.
I had only taken a few steps when the air around me rippled.
A faint red mist gathered, and Jiang Hongyi's semi-transparent figure reappeared, this time slightly more solid than when she was in the archives.
She floated beside Su Xiaobai without saying a word, simply following silently.
"Senior?" Su Xiaobai turned to look at her. "Shouldn't you be back...where you belong?"
Jiang Hongyi lowered her head and said, "I'll take you there."
"Do you know the way?"
"I'd recognize you even if you were ashes." Jiang Hongyi's voice was very soft, but every word seemed frozen.
Su Xiaobai didn't ask any more questions.
The two walked one after the other—or rather, one person and one spirit—through the teaching building and headed towards the deepest part of the academy.
The further you go in that direction, the more desolate the environment becomes.
The light from the main building couldn't reach this place at all; the weeds grew taller than a person, and they rustled when you stepped on them.
In Su Xiaobai's eyes, these weeds automatically corrected themselves into... a withered rose bush?
The branches were twisted and thorny, but some withered and blackened flower buds did hang from the tips.
It had quite a nice atmosphere.
"Senior," Su Xiaobai said as they walked, "who is Shen Qinghe on that list...?"
Jiang Hongyi's figure swayed slightly.
Several seconds passed before she spoke, her voice slightly unsteady.
"She...is my best friend."
Su Xiaobai paused in her steps.
"Best friend?"
"Hmm." Jiang Hongyi nodded, her semi-transparent face expressionless. "We met when we entered university, we were roommates, and we talked about everything. Her family was poor, so I often helped her out."
She said... she would be my bridesmaid when I get married.
"and then?"
"And then..." Jiang Hongyi laughed, a cold laugh, "On the day of my engagement, she hugged me and cried, saying she was happy for me."
"Then, on the seventh day of the twelfth lunar month... it was her who led the people to surround me."
Su Xiaobai fell silent.
The chat in the live stream went silent for a few seconds.
"Holy crap..."
"A best friend betraying you?"
"That's even crueler than a fiancé..."
"No wonder he harbors such deep hatred..."
"Why?" Su Xiaobai asked.
"I don't know." Jiang Hongyi shook her head. "I really don't know. That day, she led her people in, looked at me and smiled, saying... 'Jiang Hongyi, you've finally met your match.'"
I asked her why, and she said... "Because you have everything, and I have nothing."
"Just because of that?"
"Maybe," Jiang Hongyi said. "Or maybe... she never considered me a friend from the beginning."
As she spoke, she raised her hand to look at her translucent hand.
"After I died, my resentment lingered and became part of the 'rules' here. I can feel... her presence is here too, in the old school building, and she has never left."
"She's waiting for me." Jiang Hongyi looked at the dilapidated building getting closer and closer. "Waiting for me to go back, and then... kill me again."
Su Xiaobai followed her gaze.
In his eyes, that old school building gradually distorted into an old-fashioned girls' dormitory building in the style of the Republic of China era.
Three stories high, with mottled exterior walls covered in dead vines.
Most of the windows were broken, dark and gaping, like countless eyes.
However, the overall outline does resemble a dormitory building, and there is even a crooked sign hanging at the entrance that reads "Girls' Dormitory, Men Keep Out".
In Su Xiaobai's eyes, the words on the sign automatically corrected themselves to "Girls' Dormitory, Welcome to Visit".
He laughed.
"This visual correction shows an understanding of the program's effect."
Jiang Hongyi didn't understand what he was saying, but she floated in front of him and pointed to the dormitory building entrance.
The door was made of wood and was ajar; it was pitch black inside.
"This is it," Jiang Hongyi said. "Back then... I lived on the third floor, in the innermost room."
"And now?" Su Xiaobai asked. "Where does she still live?"
"I don't know." Jiang Hongyi's voice lowered. "I...I'm afraid to go in."
Su Xiaobai looked at her.
I noticed her translucent body was trembling slightly.
It's not fear.
It's that kind of... uncontrollable resentment and pain surging up when you get close to the source.
"Senior." Su Xiaobai reached out, wanting to hold her hand, but his fingers passed through her blurry image.
He paused, then changed his approach.
"Look at me."
Jiang Hongyi raised her head.
Su Xiaobai looked into her eyes and said very seriously, "This time, I'll go first."
"You come with me."
"If she dares to touch you again..."
He smiled, but didn't finish his sentence.
But the meaning is obvious.
Jiang Hongyi stared blankly at him, her eyes slowly reddening.
"Why...why..."
"Why so many whys?" Su Xiaobai interrupted her. "The person I've set my sights on—no, the ghost I've set my sights on—only I can bully him; no one else can."
"This principle applies everywhere."
After saying that, he lifted his foot and walked towards the half-closed wooden door.
The moment my hand touched the door panel—
Squeak.
The door opened by itself.
A musty smell, mixed with a faint, floral fragrance, wafted out.
In Su Xiaobai's eyes, the smell automatically corrected itself to... the smell of cheap perfume?
It's quite strong.
He frowned and stepped inside.
Inside was a large, spacious hall, with a thick layer of dust on the floor.
The staircase directly opposite the door leads to the second floor, and the handrail is broken.
The hall is flanked by corridors, with rows of doors that are tightly closed.
Jiang Hongyi's spirit floated beside him, pointing to the deepest part of the left corridor.
"That one," she said, "308."
Su Xiaobai nodded and walked in that direction.
The corridor was narrow, and large chunks of plaster had peeled off the walls, revealing the blackened bricks underneath.
But in his eyes, the places where the paint had peeled off automatically corrected themselves into... marks where posters had been pasted and then torn off?
You can even see some remaining colored patterns, like a portrait of a female celebrity from the Republic of China era.
"This revision is incredibly detailed," Su Xiaobai muttered.
I walked to the entrance of 308.
The door was closed, and the house number was so rusted that it was almost illegible.
Jiang Hongyi stopped at the door, her body trembling even more violently.
She pointed to the door, her lips moved, but no sound came out.
But Su Xiaobai understood.
"It's here."
Su Xiaobai reached out and pushed the door open.
The door wasn't locked.
With a very soft sound, the door opened.
The room was dark, with only a little moonlight shining in through the broken window.
Su Xiaobai went inside.
The first thing I saw was on the wall.
It was densely covered with words.
It was carved with a sharp object, very deep and with great force.
"You bitch, go to hell!"
"Serves him right."
"Stop pretending to be high and mighty."
"Warlord lackey"
You are not good enough for him.
……
It was all vicious curses.
In Su Xiaobai's eyes, these words were automatically corrected to...
"You're so beautiful (jealous)"
Why not me?
"Is he blind?"
"I'm so sour."
……
Su Xiaobai stared at the "corrected" words, speechless for a moment.
He turned to look at the center of the room.
On the ground, a pair of scissors lay quietly.
It's rusted, but you can still see the original outline. It's quite exquisite, and there seems to have been patterns on the handle before.
There was a small blackish-red stain on the tip of the scissors.
In Su Xiaobai's eyes, the stain automatically corrected itself into... dried red paint?
Jiang Hongyi's spirit floated in and stopped in front of the scissors.
She stared at the scissors, her entire being (the spirit) frozen in place, completely still.
Only their eyes were fixed on it.
"It's this..." she murmured, "the dowry my mother gave me..."
"I've used it to cut out the character for 'happiness'..."
"I also used it... to cut my own neck."
