Chapter 19, Race Car No. 28
"Well done, Lin."
As James Walls walked down the corridor, he reached out and patted Lin Feng on the shoulder.
"Just telling the truth." Lin Feng tugged at the collar of Williams' dark blue team jersey. "I'm not good at saying nice things, James. You might have to get used to me causing trouble for the team's PR department."
"As long as you can get your car into the top ten, the PR department will be happy to work overtime every day to clean up your mess," James said with a smile. "Come on, let me take you to meet our big boss. He's been looking forward to meeting you since midnight last night."
The two walked through a high-tech glass corridor and arrived at a spacious office on the top floor of the headquarters building.
James knocked on the door, then pushed it open and walked in.
The office has a very masculine style, with several huge photos of the Williams team dominating F1 in the 1980s and 90s hanging on the walls.
Standing in front of the huge floor-to-ceiling window was a burly old man with gray hair and a vigorous spirit.
Jost Capito, the current CEO of the Williams team and a legendary figure who has served as an executive in several top teams, including the WRC and McLaren.
Although James Wols is now primarily responsible for the team's daily operations and track management, Jost Capito, as CEO, represents the major financial backer, Dorrington Capital, and controls the team's business lifeline and macro strategy.
Hearing the door open, Capito turned around, his sharp blue eyes scanning Lin Feng up and down before he suddenly burst into a hearty laugh.
"Ha! Look who this is! The Chinese kid who fired the Ferrari!" Capito strode over and stretched out his big hands.
"Hello, Mr. Capito." Lin Feng smiled and extended his hand, giving the veteran who had spent most of his life in the racing world a firm handshake.
"Just call me Jost." Capito patted Lin Feng's shoulder forcefully and gestured to the sofa next to him. "Sit down, don't be shy. What would you like to drink? Coffee? Black tea? Or Red Bull?"
"Water is fine, thank you." Lin Feng sat down on the sofa.
Capito greatly admired this relaxed and unhurried feeling.
"Lin, James told me about the conditions you offered last night. To be honest, handing over complete control of the car's setup to a young man who's only raced one race is insane." Capito sat down opposite Lin Feng, his gaze intense. "But we're not here to watch this team struggle at the back of the pack every year. Williams needs a change, they need a spark of madness."
Capitol leaned forward: "I watched your performance in Saudi Arabia three times over. Your driving style has a wildness that many college drivers lack these days, which is why I agreed to let James sign you. Don't care what others say, and don't pay attention to the ridicule. Here, in Grove, you have absolute freedom. Go for it, and rekindle that 'badass' spirit that's in this team's bones!"
"I will, Jost." Lin Feng picked up the water his secretary had just brought in and took a sip. "As long as the team's wind tunnel data and chassis engineers don't hold me back at crucial moments, I guarantee that on the Melbourne circuit, the blue cars will definitely not be used to lap other teams."
"Great! I love that kind of spirit!" Capito laughed heartily, clearly very satisfied. "Go on, James will show you around your new machine. I look forward to seeing how you perform in Australia."
After leaving the CEO's office, James took Lin Feng in the elevator and went directly to the race car assembly workshop on the ground floor.
The heavy metal door slowly opened.
The huge workshop was brightly lit. Dozens of engineers in mechanic's uniforms were busy working in front of two racing car chassis.
Because of Logan Sargent's serious crash in the previous race, the chassis of car number two was almost completely reassembled, and it is now in the tense stage of wiring harness installation.
As James led Lin Feng in, the noise in the workshop gradually subsided.
The engineers all stopped what they were doing and looked at the young man who had just made the biggest news in the paddock with curious and scrutinizing eyes.
"Everyone, stop what you're doing." James clapped his hands, drawing everyone's attention. "Let me formally introduce Lin Feng, our team's new driver for this season. Starting today, he will be racing for Williams alongside Alexander."
A round of enthusiastic applause erupted in the workshop.
"Hello everyone, just call me Lin." Lin Feng waved his hand, completely unlike the arrogant demeanor he displayed when facing the media earlier. "I know that because of some unexpected events in the last race, everyone has been working overtime these past few days. I can't guarantee that you can relax immediately, but I promise that I won't be like a headless fly and send the race car that you've worked so hard to build back into the barrier."
This self-introduction immediately drew a burst of laughter.
The mechanics, whose nerves had been stretched thin from working overtime, immediately relaxed a lot, after all, the previous driver had really put them through a lot.
"Alright, Lin, come and check your car."
James led Lin Feng to the race car that was being assembled.
The race car still features Williams' classic dark blue paint scheme. The hood is not yet closed, revealing the intricate Mercedes power unit and exhaust pipes inside.
A brand new white number, "28," has been painted on the nose cone and rear wing side panels of the race car overnight.
"Number 28, that's the license plate number you had your agent apply for with the FIA this morning." James looked at the number. "Can you tell me why you chose this number? Is there any special significance to it? I remember Schumacher and Vettel had a lot of stories behind their chosen numbers."
Lin Feng stepped forward, touched the cool carbon fiber Halo nose protector, turned his head and said seriously, "Because in China, 8 represents wealth, and 28 means double wealth. I signed a three-year contract, so of course I hope my bonus will double during these three years."
James: "..."
The technicians nearby: "..."
Lin Feng couldn't help but laugh when he saw their reactions.
"Haha, just kidding, actually it's because my birthday is June 28th..."
"Ahem... I see." James coughed awkwardly twice, steer the conversation back on track.
He turned to Lin Feng and introduced him to a middle-aged man with thinning hair who was holding a tablet computer. "Lin, this is Paul. From today onwards, he will be your chief race engineer. All your communication, strategies, and vehicle feedback on the track will be handled by Paul."
Paul extended his hand to Lin Feng: "Hello, Lin. I've looked at your telemetry data. Your braking point is very late, and you like to oversteer a bit at the apex of corners. This might be a challenge for our FW46, as its rear downforce is currently not very consistent."
"Hello, Paul." Lin Feng shook hands with Paul. "You're right, the FW46 not only has unstable rear downforce, but it also has significant problems with cornering handling in low-speed corners. But that's alright, that's what I'll be working on next."
Lin Feng patted the side box of the race car: "Let's go, take me to the simulator. I can't wait to see just how difficult this tractor is to drive."
