In America, my cousin, Supergirl Kara...

Chapter 84: What I Saw and Heard on the Highway

"Judging from your tone, your dad won't let you go out at night?" Li Xiao glanced at the rearview mirror, turned on his super hearing for two seconds, and then quickly turned it off.

His ears couldn't stand having this thing on all the time; it felt like someone was hitting his eardrums with a warhammer.

This level is just right; it allows you to catch sounds without straining your ears.

Hopefully, there will be a way in the future to listen to music without any damage, even if it's a bit noisy, as long as it's not as unbearable as it is now.

Li Xiao was also quite helpless.

"Yes, our family rules are very strict. We eat at five o'clock and have to be back in our rooms by six," Constantine shrugged, his tone not full of complaints, but more like he was used to it. "My mom goes to her room to call her best friend, while my older sister watches her videos. My dad gets off work at six-thirty and basically sits in the living room watching TV until two o'clock before going back to his room. Anyone who dares to come out during this time will be greeted with beer-smelling saliva."

"Why is it so strict? How come your dad dared to kick you out of the house last time?" Li Xiao asked, but in his heart he was already thinking that this situation must be to guard against some kind of danger.

"There's nothing we can do about it, every household is like that." Constantine took out a cigarette, tapped it on the pack, lit it, and took a deep drag. "Because people break into houses at night to rob and kill. Actually, the time I was kicked out, my dad looked for me, but he couldn't find me. He was probably afraid I'd be beaten to death in the street."

It seems that his father is not a reckless man who would violently attack his family, but rather someone who silently protects his family in his own way, even if his methods are a bit crude.

"Enough of that, buddy, let's look at the map." Constantine bit his cigarette, freeing one hand to pull a tattered, greasy map from his pocket. He slid his finger across the map, circling a faint mark. "This is Mount Rainier, this is Christine Falls, and nearby is the area around Reflection Lake. Based on our initial estimate, this mine is likely located in the middle of these three corners. This is our destination for tonight."

Li Xiao parked the car on the side of the road, picked up the map, and found that the image on it was very blurry. In a few places, he could only determine the approximate location, and in most places, he could only guess.

But Constantine managed to analyze the situation logically and clearly on this tattered piece of paper.

"You have the potential to be a tomb raider," Li Xiao exclaimed in amazement. "If you were given some training, you might actually become quite capable."

"I can't hear what you're saying at all!" Constantin asked, looking completely bewildered. Then he slapped his thigh. "Is it some kind of mysterious Chinese magic?"

"More or less," Li Xiao started the car, which vibrated as it sped into the street. His ears twitched silently, and he immediately heard all the sounds around him. His expression changed abruptly, and he jerked the steering wheel, turning the car straight into the dark alleyway.

"What's wrong, buddy!" Constantine hurriedly grabbed the roof handle, his whole body bouncing with the ride. "Is my old man coming over?"

"They're the police," Li Xiao shook his head and turned off the interior lights. "I don't have a driver's license. If they catch us, we're both done for!"

"Holy crap, you're driving without a license!" Constantine's eyes flashed with astonishment. "That's insane! I've always wanted to do this, but you're way better than me!"

It has to be said that Constantine is a thrill-seeker. A normal person would probably just press F if they encountered something like this, since who would want to entrust their life to someone who doesn't have a driver's license?

But he seemed to have discovered something new and amazing, clicking his tongue in amazement.

Li Xiao gestured for him to shut up. A few minutes later, a Chevrolet Tahoe with "police" printed on it drove past, its red and blue flashing lights illuminating the ground at the alley entrance.

Li Xiao slowly lowered his breathing, and the flashing red and blue lights gradually faded into the distance. He twitched his ears and realized that the car had completely driven away.

Li Xiao released the clutch, and the car silently drove out of the alleyway, then accelerated and sped away from the spot.

"Li Xiao, your driving skills don't seem like those of a beginner," Constantine said, tugging at his seatbelt to feel the smoothness of the car. "Have you been secretly driving your sister's car quite a bit?"

"This is my first time driving," Li Xiao frankly admitted. "Really."

"I don't believe it," Constantine shook his head, seemingly on drugs. "My dad has been driving for thirty years and he's not as steady as you."

"If you don't believe me, that's fine," Li Xiao said, and didn't continue the conversation.

Fragments of light kept flashing past my eyes, and the low houses on both sides gradually decreased, replaced by wide wilderness and scattered isolation zones.

The sign for the highway entrance in the distance was visible under the high beams, displaying the words "speed limit 85 miles per hour".

Without taking the highway, it would be impossible to reach the foot of the mountains in an hour. Li Xiao turned on the left turn signal, and the car smoothly entered the ramp.

Traffic on the highway was not heavy at around 7 p.m., with most cars driving at around 60 miles per hour like tired office workers.

At this moment, several young men and women on motorcycles made strange noises and arrogantly overtook other vehicles in the middle of the traffic.

They were all wearing loose, ripped bell-bottoms and tie-dye shirts, with an overall bohemian style. Several drivers slammed on their brakes, nearly causing rear-end collisions.

"These guys are dressed pretty uniformly," Li Xiao said, gradually picking up speed after weaving through several cars parked side by side. "What organization are they from?"

"You've seen Quentin's movies, right?" Constantine said, tidying his backpack. "These mad dogs are hippies."

"What? There are still hippies these days?" Li Xiao stabilized his speed at 130 km/h, and the old pickup truck roared happily, spewing out long exhaust fumes and exuding vitality on the highway.

"Hmph, this organization has never disappeared; it's just changed from its former large scale to a subculture community," Constantine sneered. "The only thing that hasn't changed is their insane behavior—a bunch of freaks!"

Despite the Hollywood legend's portrayal of hippies being wiped out by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, the reality was that offended hippies stormed into a villa, killed all the men, and raped and tortured the women to death.

Moreover, the leading figure among the hippies not only married while in prison but also lived to a ripe old age.

This reminded Li Xiao of the non-mainstream movement in China in the past, but those people only entertained themselves and did not harm others. However, these hippies did things that were abhorrent to everyone. Calling them a bunch of beasts would not be an exaggeration. Li Xiao began to concentrate on driving and not think about anything else.

Despite its dilapidated appearance, the pickup truck sped incredibly fast, leaving other cars far behind thanks to Li Xiao's skillful driving.

Soon, a small black dot on the slow lane began to grow larger, and Li Xiao moved his car into the overtaking lane ahead of time.

A white Nissan appeared in front of us, its doors wide open with no signs of an accident, but there was no one in sight, as if the car had been abandoned and the driver had fled.

Li Xiao didn't think much of it and accelerated past, but soon four dark red tracks appeared on the road ahead.

Li Xiao looked closely and saw that it was actually long strips of flesh and blood smeared on the ground, and it was continuous, turning from the initial fragments of flesh and blood into dripping blood strips.

Is someone dragging a dead animal along?

However, a small, pinkish lump of flesh not far away made Li Xiao's pupils shrink.
