Chapter 30: Successfully Obtaining a Social Security Card

Just then, the bald, burly man suddenly made a "uh-uh" sound, and the donut in his hand fell to the ground.

He clutched his throat in agony and collapsed, his face deathly pale and lips turning purple. A large crowd gathered around him, but they all stared indifferently at the white clerk convulsing.

The bald, burly man's eyes were filled with despair, his fingernails digging into the floor with a harsh sound, and he felt his vision growing darker and darker.

"Don't eat the sour radishes, those government clerks are all bad news."

"Die! If you die, I'll be the first to call and tell people to sell your body."

To be honest, this clerk had a very good attitude. Not only did he not vent his frustrations on others, but he also handled everything smoothly without any delays.

He shouldn't have died on duty like that.

Thinking of this, Li Xiao climbed onto the table and squeezed through the window.

"Hey, what's he doing? Like he's trying to sneak in and steal something?"

'Or maybe you could go in and French kiss that person?'

Despite the foul language, Ji Xiao remained unmoved. He reached under the big man's armpits and lifted him up effortlessly, then circled his ribs and used the Heimlich maneuver.

"Hey, is this guy a Muggle? Why are you saving him?"

"What a fool! They're deliberately messing with him, and he actually has the nerve to help them."

After repeating this several times, the bald, burly man spat out the food residue stuck in his throat, but his face remained flushed, and in just a moment, Chao began to roll his eyes back.

What happened?

Li Xiao quickly squatted down and pressed his ear to his chest to listen. The lungs seemed to have a strong echo, as if sticky mud was blocking them.

He quickly unbuttoned the bald man's shirt, made a phoenix-eye fist with his knuckles, and forcefully slammed it into the man's chest, specifically the area around the Tangzhong acupoint. Acupuncture would be most effective here, as it could forcefully stimulate the lungs to begin working. However, given the current circumstances, this was the only option. If he hadn't looked at the acupoint chart of traditional Chinese medicine yesterday, he might not have known these mysteries of the human body.

As he wrote it down, the clerk's chest felt like it had been hit by a blower inserted into a wall. His chest visibly bulged, followed by a violent cough. As he coughed, he reached into his throat with his fingers, and with a series of dry heaves, he pulled a tree-canopy-like object out of his mouth.

Its dark green color and the edges still showing the cell membranes of lung lobes are the culprits blocking both lungs: phlegm plugs.

The clerk let out a long sigh of relief and slowly stood up with Li Xiao's help.

"Thank you, doctor. You saved my life. If it weren't for you, I'm afraid I would be meeting God today."

The bald, burly man wiped the saliva from the corner of his mouth, gripped Ji Xiao's hand tightly, and said incredulously, "That was amazing! Your punch almost killed me, but I immediately felt my lungs go completely empty, like they were filled with concrete. It gave me a long-lost feeling of being able to breathe freely. It felt so good!"

"Mr. Tom, I must remind you to smoke less cigarettes in the future. Your lungs are almost full of tar, and I'm sure you don't want to go through another brush with death." Ji Xiao's gaze shifted slightly downwards to his name tag, which had his photo and name printed on it.

"Sigh, I want to quit too, but the pressure is too much. I'll try to smoke less in the future," Tom said with a wry smile. Then, he said seriously, "Doctor, you need to apply for a Social Security card, right? Please give me the documents, and I'll process it for you right now."

"Excuse me, I need to get this done this morning." Li Xiao handed over the documents.

"Of course, I'll take care of it."

After Tom finished, he sat down at the computer and started working. During the break between processing the cards, no one from the Social Security Administration came out to check on him. The people in the waiting room saw that Tom had returned to normal but had not achieved the result they wanted, so they muttered a few words and left.

A few minutes later, he took the item out of the card-making machine and handed it to Li Xiao with both hands. "Okay, doctor, this is your Social Security card. Please keep it safe. If you'd like, you can add it to my account. I can help you with the overall tax payment process. Sometimes the tax bureau will suddenly send out tax notices in the middle of the night. If you don't check them in time, you'll incur unnecessary fines."

"Thank you, sir," Jixiao said, feeling it was necessary, and took out her phone.

"No, no, no," Tom waved his hands repeatedly, his expression a mixture of gratitude and shame. "I should be thanking you. Without you, I would have died on the job today."

Ji Xiao readily accepted the apology. Tom took out a wad of US dollars from his pocket and handed it to Li Xiao, saying, "Doctor, this is a small token of my appreciation, and it will also cover the medical expenses."

Li Xiao accepted it; he was short of money and couldn't possibly be embarrassed to accept the salary just because of a momentary sense of justice.

"See you later, Mr. Tom," Ji Xiao said goodbye and prepared to leave. However, Tom stood there, somewhat conflicted, clearly wanting to say something. Ji Xiao felt that the only thing that would draw attention to him was his acupuncture skills, so he asked, "Do you need my help treating a patient?"

"I can't hide it from you after all, Doctor," Tom said with a wry smile, and began to slowly explain. It turned out that his family had a history of hereditary asthma. His symptoms were slightly milder, but his eldest son's breathing was like a bellows. After seeing Li Xiao pull him back from the brink of death, he wanted Li Xiao to help him.

"Of course, I won't let you work for nothing. I will pay every penny of the medical expenses you are owed."

"You should go to a reputable hospital, and I can't guarantee a 100% cure," Li Xiao didn't immediately agree, as he hadn't actually seen any of the patients and couldn't make a definitive statement.

"Doctor, I believe you. If it's not cured, will it get worse?"

Tom pulled a cigarette from his pocket, hesitated for a moment before glancing at Jixiao, who shrugged, smiled apologetically, and slowly lit it.

"In a couple of days," Ji Xiao glanced at the time. "I'll contact you when I'm free."

"Thank you so much, you're such a kind young man."

Just then, that mechanical voice echoed in Li Xiao's mind.

{Quest: You have successfully healed a fallen elf with a conscience, and he is deeply grateful for your saving his life.}

Under Tom's grateful gaze, Li Xiao slung his backpack over his shoulder and left the Social Security Bureau. As he stepped outside, a wave of heat hit him. Li Xiao squinted, put on his baseball cap, and headed towards the subway station. In the afternoon, he planned to first guide Lisa's training. After all, a job that pays $100 an hour is hard to come by. Although he helped expose the family doctor's despicable behavior yesterday, the two were still in an employment relationship.

Passing by a roadside trash can, an elderly couple, who looked like a married couple, were leaning over and rummaging through the trash can. Their black and white striped shirts were torn and frayed.

But it didn't have the sweet scent of leaves that homeless people usually have.

Li Xiao didn't think much of it, but just then, the old man rummaging through the trash can suddenly sat up and looked at Li Xiao, asking, "Young man, were you just going to apply for a Social Security card?"
