Chapter 49 Just a watchdog
"Indeed, they just left not long ago, so their footprints won't fade so quickly. If we chase after them now, we might still find them."
Grant agreed with Roan's words.
"What if we can't catch up?"
"With our small force, if we encounter even more monsters in the forest, wouldn't we just be sending ourselves to our deaths?"
Hunter had considered many things and poured cold water on everyone's enthusiasm.
Even if you can't catch up, you still have to chase.
After thinking it over, Canon felt he had to do something.
"Levins' incident happened in our area, so even if it has nothing to do with us, we still need to take appropriate action."
"In this way, we can give the lord an explanation."
To be honest, Canon didn't want to save them.
He still vividly remembers the humiliation he suffered ten years ago.
At that time, Levins reprimanded his men in front of him.
He tried to reason with them, but was immediately pinned to the ground by two guards.
Levens stepped on his face and said, "What are you? You're just a watchdog my father kept."
Fortunately, when the lord found out, he had Levins hung up and beaten, and made him apologize to him in public.
This made Canon feel a little better.
"Uncle Canon is right. We must take action and let the lord know that we have done our best."
Luo An looked at the farmers present.
"The newly formed patrol team entered the forest with me. I followed the tracks they left behind to search. If I could find them, I would give it a try; if not, I would give up."
"I will go with you."
Grant and Canon immediately said they wanted to go too.
"I'll go too."
A tall, middle-aged man stepped out from the crowd.
Sterwin.
He was the last farmer to arrive in this area and had served as the captain of a large brigade of the guard regiment; he was very capable.
When Roan visited his farm before, the slaves were all strong and healthy, trained like soldiers, and very disciplined.
"Then the four of us will lead the patrol team."
Luo An felt that the number of people was about enough, and he was only going to make a show of it anyway.
Seeing this, the other farmers said nothing more.
Celia walked over and pulled Laroan aside.
"Master, I'll go with you."
Roan, however, did not intend for her to come along, advising, "The farm needs someone to guard it. The goblins launched an attack tonight, and it's hard to say whether they will strike again while we're away."
Celia didn't quite understand what her master meant.
When the master went to see Levins just now, it was as if he was going to settle accounts with him.
But why is the master now going to rescue Levins?
"I...I understand."
Celia had no choice but to stay and wait for her master to return before asking him the reason.
"Wait for me to come back."
Luo An mounted his horse and rode at the front.
Grant, Canon, and Stevin followed closely behind, followed by forty patrol members.
......
Upon entering the forest, Luo An held up a torch, his eyes fixed on the ground.
The goblin's footprints were dense and all heading in one direction.
"The marks are still very fresh; it's been less than two hours since then."
Roan has some knowledge of goblin habits.
Even at night, they move at extremely high speeds.
"We need to speed things up."
Luo An continued walking along the trail.
The group quickened their pace slightly, moving swiftly through the lush forest.
Some monsters noticed the group in the darkness, but seeing the number of people, none of them dared to attack.
The group traversed the forest for an unknown amount of time until they reached a high point, at which point the sky began to lighten with the first hint of dawn.
The goblin's footprints end here.
But Roan clearly remembered that below this high ground was the valley where the goblin tribe was located.
"We can hear water ahead. Let's look around."
When Luo An emerged from the dense forest and reached the edge of the mountain path, he feigned surprise and said, "I found it! Come here quickly!"
The crowd moved at the sound.
The terrain suddenly opened up in front of them.
At the bottom of the valley was a huge goblin tribe.
"Oh My God..."
Grant's words revealed a deep shock.
Torches hung in the valley, thatched huts stood in rows, and the figures of green-skinned monsters were densely packed together.
"There is such a large goblin tribe in the forest."
As a former captain, Stevin had participated in many monster exterminations and wiped out many goblin tribes, but he had never seen a tribe of this caliber.
There are probably tens of thousands of goblins in this tribe.
This is already considered an extremely terrifying level of monster calamity.
"Even if the lord were to mobilize the entire guard, it would be difficult to wipe them out."
Stevin came to a conclusion.
"Look over there!"
Luo An pointed to the center of the tribe.
On the central platform, dozens of wooden stakes stand tall, each with a person tied to it.
"Young Master Levins is tied to the third stake from the right."
Roan saw that Levins was dressed in rags, with blood dripping from his eyes.
He woke up, but now he hung his head like a dead dog, his expression numb, and he was on the verge of a breakdown.
Stevin's gaze swept over the row of wooden stakes, and he paused when he saw the stake to Levins's right.
A blond youth was tied to the wooden stake. Although he looked disheveled, his somewhat familiar face made him recognize who he was.
"Next to Young Master Levins is Alan Gordon, the fourth son of the Gordon family."
When Luo An heard the name Gordon family, he always felt a sense of familiarity.
He suddenly remembered that the nobleman executed by the goblin chieftain when he came here with Celia was from the Gordon family.
Unexpectedly, I saw members of the Gordon family again.
"Uncle Grant, who is the Gordon family?"
Luo An didn't know, but seeing that the expressions of the farmers had changed slightly, he decided to ask.
"That's the most illustrious nobleman in the neighboring territory."
"The territory ruled by the Gordon family is much larger and more powerful than Lord Brian's territory."
"It ranks among the top three in the western border territories of the empire."
Grant shared the key information he knew with Roan.
Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Grant couldn't help but confirm again, "Stevin, are you sure that person is the fourth young master of the Gordon family?"
"I met him once five years ago when I was stationed on the border. He looked a bit young then. Although he has changed a bit now, I can confirm that it is him."
Stevin met Allen face-to-face back then, so there's no way he could mistake him.
The news that a large goblin tribe had captured two of its lord's sons was quite exaggerated.
"When the lord came to offer his condolences before, he told me that the third son of the Gordon family was attacked while fighting monsters in the forest."
"Allen was captured, probably because the lord sent people to look for him, but they were captured by the goblins."
Sterwin could only guess at this as he recalled the past.
"We've found the person, but we can't risk going on."
Roan looked at the goblins guarding the entrance to the tribe and spoke in a serious tone.
"We don't have enough manpower to rescue Levins and Allen."
They only had forty-four people in total, yet they went to fight against tens of thousands of goblins for people...
To be honest, it's no different from giving it away.
Besides, Luo An had no intention of providing assistance in the first place.
His purpose in coming here was to watch Levins be killed.
The reason Grant and the others came along was simply to let them see for themselves and realize that danger was truly imminent.
In this way, the number of patrol members will increase in order to protect the farm's safety.
There's nothing we can do about it.
No matter how much Luo An says, it's not as effective as letting them experience the shock firsthand.
"This matter is beyond our capabilities. We can only report it to the lord as soon as possible and let him make a decision."
