Chapter 22 Whether they come or not is unimportant, as long as they spread the word.
Grant took the beef and weighed it; it was at least ten pounds.
The meat is bright red, making it a top-quality cut of beef.
This kind of food is not easy to find on farms.
If you take it to the main city, you can sell it for a lot of money.
"You little rascal, you've got some good intentions."
Grant's tone became much warmer, with the satisfaction of an elder watching a younger generation grow up.
"After your father passed away, I was worried that you wouldn't be able to manage the farm on your own, but now it seems that I was overthinking it."
"Tell me, what do you want in exchange? Anything I have here, I can give you."
Bartering among farmers is perfectly normal, and Grant didn't see it as a free gift.
Since Luo An brought something, he must have something he wanted.
"Uncle Grant, if you have any honey or jam, I'd appreciate some."
Luo An didn't really want anything in particular, but it wouldn't be good to give it away for free, so he just casually mentioned two things.
"That's all?"
Grant was somewhat surprised.
The value of barbarian beef is significantly reduced when it's exchanged for honey or jam.
He didn't mince words; he turned around, went back into the house, and took several bottles of honey and jam, placing them in the cloth bag hanging on the green-haired bull.
"These are all homemade by my wife, they're very sweet, feel free to take them and eat them."
"If you finish eating, you can come back here to pick it up."
Grant remembered Roan's reminder.
"Roan, thank you for making the special trip to remind me about the monsters. I'll have the slaves reinforce the farm's fence today and have them take turns keeping watch at night to prevent the monsters from getting through."
Seeing that he had taken it to heart, Luo An then revealed his true purpose for coming here: "Uncle Grant, there's something I'd like to discuss with you."
"Let's go inside and talk."
Grant pulled Roan to sit down at the table and had his wife bring out two jugs of ale.
After the two clinked glasses and took a sip, Luo An said, "As you know, the lord's guard has to patrol the entire territory, which is too large. If we wait until the monsters attack the farm and then send someone to ask for help, by the time they arrive, it will be too late."
Grant frowned; these words struck a chord with him.
Last time, when the lord came with his guards to report on the monster attack, he spoke very eloquently.
Such statements include "The lord will guarantee the safety of his subjects" and "The guard will increase patrols."
Unless we remain stationed here, how can we possibly get support in time if we are attacked?
The guards could only clean up the mess afterwards.
By then everyone will be dead, so whether they come or not will be irrelevant.
Grant was troubled by this for a long time.
The lord did suggest selling the farm, but he wanted to leave it to his son.
Just a few days ago, Grant spent a huge sum of money to buy a lot of slaves in the city.
Having a large enough number of slaves is essential to better protect the farm when facing monster attacks.
He looked at the young man before him. "What are you planning to do?"
"I've come up with a solution."
Luo An said unhurriedly, "The dozen or so farms in this area are not far apart, so we can help each other."
"If any farm is attacked by monsters, immediately raise thick smoke. If other farms see the smoke, those who can lend a hand should bring people over to provide support."
"With more people, there is more strength, and the chances of protecting the farm will increase significantly."
Grant stroked his chin with one hand, not in a hurry to speak.
The farms are scattered in various places, and even the furthest farm takes just over an hour to reach.
This method is good; it can concentrate resources to a certain extent.
However, the risk is that if they take people out and their own farm is attacked, the problem could be much bigger.
"Luo An, you're right. It's always better to support each other than to fight alone."
Monster attacks have only recently occurred in this area; no one had suggested this before.
"From now on, whenever I see thick smoke near my house, and as long as the farm can spare some manpower, I will definitely bring people over."
Grant had his reasons, but ultimately agreed.
"Uncle Grant, I'll go to the other farms and tell them about this."
Having achieved his goal, Luo An didn't linger. He rode the docile green bull toward another farm.
......
Over the next half day, Luo An visited three more farms.
As expected, the slaves busy in the fields were so frightened by the sight of the bull carrying people that they dropped their tools and fled into the houses.
Upon hearing of the attack on Luo An, the three farmers accepted the fresh beef he brought, exchanged some items, and all agreed to a verbal pact to "support each other when the smoke rises."
As the sun sets, crimson clouds paint the sky red.
The bull walked along the muddy road, heading towards its own farm.
As the evening breeze blew, Luo An sat on the back of the ox, fully aware of the situation.
These farmers readily agreed, but it's hard to say whether they would actually risk going out to help when the monsters attack.
After all, no one is willing to gamble with their life and fortune.
Fortunately, Luo An hadn't really expected these people to come and help.
As long as the news of "monsters stirring in the forest" is spread, the people in this area will know.
His reminder gave the farmers enough time to prepare, and the promise he made would take root in people's hearts.
When the big show unfolds, all the groundwork he's spent time laying will help boost his reputation.
As dusk fell, Luo An could see the outline of the farm.
As soon as you open the door, the rich aroma of meat broth wafts out.
Celia was sitting at the table, resting her chin on her two little hands, waiting for him.
Her injuries had healed considerably; although her face was still somewhat pale, it had regained some color.
"Master, you're back."
She got up and went to greet him, naturally taking the supplies and brushing the dust off his clothes.
"The broth has been kept warm on the stove; I'll bring it out for you now."
Watching Celia's retreating figure, Roan felt a sense of comfort, knowing that someone was waiting for him to come home.
Celia brought out a large bowl of soup and sat down opposite her.
The warm broth soothed my stomach and eased the fatigue of my journey.
"Today, I visited three farms..."
As he ate, Roan told Celia what had happened.
"Master, when are we going to the forest to hunt monsters?"
Celia tried her best to appear as if she had fully recovered from her injuries.
"Rest for another day, and I'll go to those farms I didn't mention tomorrow."
"Now that the notification is complete, we can begin operations."
Luo An plans to go to the forest to hunt monsters every two weeks or so.
Monsters can be killed and sold for money, or used as food; there's no such thing as too many.
"Oh, right, Celia."
Luo An remembered what she had said before, "What is that 'secret technique' you mentioned that can eliminate the hidden dangers of magic overdraft?"
"Will this secret technique cause any harm to your body?"
Celia paused, her lips still pursing the broth, a blush rising on her fair cheeks.
"Master, the secret technique does not harm me."
Celia looked up at Roan and muttered softly, "Master, elves have a natural affinity for magic, and their understanding of magic is quite different from that of humans."
"This secret technique is a healing art passed down through generations of elves."
"I can transform my own magic into a gentle mana-replenishing aura, and then transfer it into the other person's body through the fusion of magic to repair the damage caused by the depletion of magic."
"Just a few sessions are all it takes to eliminate the health risks caused by magic overdraft."
After drinking the broth, Luo An thought the method was quite good.
"You've had a hard time."
Looking at Celia's shy face, he didn't know why he felt shy.
"It's what I should do."
Celia's voice became even softer, and the tips of her ears turned pink.
"However, the fusion of magic requires physical contact between me and my master."
