Chapter 63 A Warm and Cozy Family
The dinner party at the Mercury family's new house started off with a sense of chaos and turmoil.
The main reason is that Black Egg must have some kind of hearing problem. He was clearly invited to dinner alone, but he thought his whole family was invited.
When the doorbell rang and Mercury opened the door, his eyes widened in surprise. A large group of tall, muscular Black men stood outside. Mercury initially thought an NBA team had arrived at his doorstep.
In reality, Heidan brought his parents, siblings, and even their boyfriends and girlfriends, taking up most of the small courtyard outside the door.
Mercury was stunned for a while before he came to his senses.
This is a huge misunderstanding, but guests are guests, and there's no reason to turn them away.
The Mercury family had to change their originally cozy indoor dinner to an outdoor barbecue in their backyard.
Thankfully, the yard of this new house is big enough, otherwise it really wouldn't be able to fit so many people.
Without a word, Al grabbed his car keys and rushed to the nearest supermarket, carrying back a trunk full of steaks. Mercury was still worried it wouldn't be enough, because the two-meter-tall Black Egg wasn't even the tallest in their household.
Faced with this group of guests who were comparable to heavy armored vehicles, the Mercury family alone was simply no match for them.
Fortunately, John arrived early. Mercury took off his suit and put him on the barbecue grill. Now it was time for this Michelin three-star chef to put on a show.
Of course, the Black Egg family didn't come empty-handed to eat for free.
The housewarming gifts brought by the Black Egg family were piled up like a small mountain on the long table. The complete set of ceramic tableware had a warm and lustrous glaze, clearly not an industrial product from a supermarket assembly line; two large cardboard boxes of butter cookies and pound cakes exuded a rich baking aroma; in addition, there were several pieces of fabric decorations with ingenious craftsmanship.
Black Egg munched on a rib, proudly patting his chest: "My mom made it all herself. If it weren't for her cooking skills, all of us gluttons in the family would have starved to death long ago."
The most hardcore one had to be Black Egg's older brother, who carried a heavy metal toolbox as he stepped through the door.
"Second-hand houses always have hidden problems. Don't worry, my brother is a professionally licensed plumber, electrician, and carpenter. He'll renovate your house today."
Before the 1.8-meter-tall, muscular Black man, Al, the head of the household, quickly led him around the house a few times. The two searched the area with flashlights and actually found a hidden leak in the pipes outside.
The two men cursed and swore at the unscrupulous agent before starting the repairs.
The leak was in an extremely tricky location; the crack in the wall was so narrow that even Mercury's wrist couldn't fit through. Mercury stood to the side with his arms crossed, wondering how this "load-bearing wall" was going to plug the leak. Surely they couldn't just tear down the wall and put it back up?
The next second, this guy gave him a live demonstration of what professionalism looks like.
His thick arm seemed to melt like rubber, its bones and muscles stretching and softening strangely, sliding into the narrow crack in the wall like a large python, firmly locking the valve deep inside.
So this person also has superpowers. Although their ability rating is obviously not high, and they can't fight by stretching dozens of meters like in the movies, they're perfect for part-time jobs like plumbing and electrical repairs and drilling into sewer pipes.
This family is full of talented people.
Mercury couldn't help but find Black Egg and asked curiously, "Your brother is a plumber, and your mother is exceptionally skilled. How did you end up so poor that you couldn't even afford a fine and ended up in Black Olive Prison?"
Being a plumber is a well-paid job, and judging from his family, none of them are the type to do drugs or mess around; they're definitely a high-quality blue-collar Black family.
Hei Dan sighed and said, "During that time, my mother suddenly fell ill, and the family panicked. Although she recovered, the hospital fees were too high, and our insurance coverage wasn't enough. My brother tried to fabricate a work injury to collect some insurance money, but he was caught and fined a large sum of money. My younger brother also dropped out of school around that time; private high schools were just too expensive."
"I was just thinking of using my skills to make some money, who would have thought I'd get caught so quickly. If it weren't for you, boss, my life would be..."
The tall, dark-skinned man, over two meters tall, looked at Mercury with teary eyes, making him feel awkward.
Mercury quickly changed the subject, asking, "So, have you resolved all those troubles at your house?"
Black Egg nodded and said, "It's solved, all thanks to my sister's boyfriend."
With that, Black Egg turned and yelled towards the oven, "Hey, Loki! Leave me a bone-in steak!"
Beside the grill, a young Black man who was helping to bring steaks to the table turned around and gave Black Egg the middle finger without any politeness.
Black Egg immediately retorted in a gruff voice, "Fuck you, you idiot!"
Mercury glanced at Loki a few times. The man was in his early twenties, with a thick gold chain around his neck and exaggerated tattoos covering his arms. He had the look of a pure street thug. Although he had some muscles, he was practically petite next to the "giants" of the Black Egg family.
Black Egg's sister isn't exactly a giant, but she has the figure of a supermodel, and is half a head taller than Loki.
But the more Mercury looked at the face, the more familiar it seemed.
"You've known Loki for a long time?" Mercury asked casually.
Blackie, oblivious to everything, said nostalgically, "We were neighbors who grew up in the same neighborhood. You know, there are tons of black kids without fathers around here, and his mother was a worthless woman who only used welfare money to buy alcohol. So he's been eating at my house since he was little, so he's like a little brother to me."
"After four years, that brat actually managed to date my sister! If I could beat him, I would have kicked his ass so hard it was raw." Black Egg snorted angrily, but then his tone softened. "But to be honest, while I was in jail, Loki was the only one supporting the family."
"He helped pay off all your family's debts of several hundred thousand?" Mercury astutely grasped the key point. "What does he do for a living?"
"An accountant, huh?" Black Egg said matter-of-factly. "Don't let his gangster-like appearance fool you; he actually went to university. Although he dropped out before finishing, Loki is a smart guy, much more educated than any of us."
Accounting?
In the Tree Root District, an "accountant" who wears a large gold chain, has tattooed arms, dropped out of school, and can casually pull out hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash to fill accounts is probably more than just an accountant.
Mercury turned his head again and took a deep look at Loki, who was chatting and laughing with his girlfriend. He had seen Loki's picture on the Association's bounty poster.
He paused for two seconds, then grabbed Black Egg's arm, dragged the big guy to a corner of the yard, and whispered a few words.
Black Egg's smile froze instantly, replaced by a twisted rage. His eyes were bloodshot, like an enraged grizzly bear. He shoved Mercury aside and strode toward Loki by the oven.
"Calm down!" Mercury reacted swiftly, gripping his shoulders tightly, his fingertips glowing slightly red, pinning the over two-meter-tall man to the spot. "Don't be so impulsive. Do you want to argue with him in front of everyone? Besides, what I'm saying might not be the truth!"
Black Egg's chest heaved violently as he forcefully suppressed his anger. He turned around, trying to appear normal, and shouted towards the grill, "Hey! Loki! We're out of beer, come with me to the corner store and buy two cases!"
Loki, still holding the plate, turned back with a bewildered look in his eyes—there were still several dozen ice cubes in the bucket at his feet. But after glancing at Black Egg's taut face, he dropped the tongs, wiped his hands casually on his apron, and followed.
Two Black men, one tall and one short, walked out of the courtyard gate one after the other.
Mercury followed at a distance, his hands in his pockets.
As soon as he turned the corner, Black Egg had already dropped his disguise.
Black Egg suddenly turned around, and with his large, fan-like hand, he grabbed Loki's collar tightly, lifting him almost off the ground.
"Give me the truth, you fucking idiot!" Black Egg hissed, his throat churning as if filled with bloody sand. "Are you working for those cannibals?! You damn fool, do you even know what kind of people this gang is?! They're the biggest scumbags, don't you know that?!"
