Why is his holy light red?
Chapter 57 The Torn World
Mercury and his two companions followed the Mother of Life into the dazzlingly luxurious women's clothing section.
As for that big star, Feng Dier, nobody cares about him anymore.
Perhaps for the sake of his movie, he might not be afraid to offend the Storm King or compete with the Mother of Life for priority, but Immortal Technology will not tolerate him.
Surrounded by a group of unfriendly staff, he slunk away. The superhero, mindful of the potential impact, wouldn't actually kill Von Deer, the big star.
But capitalists are different; they have plenty of means. In the eyes of Eternal Life Technology, the Mother of Life is a level above the Federal President.
The ranking of superheroes has always been one of the most hotly debated topics in the world.
Aside from the undisputed number one spot held by the Holy Light Angel, the rankings after that are anyone's guess. After all, no one can actually drag these superheroes into the ring and have them compete for victory or even die; everyone can only speculate based on their public performances.
However, there are a few names that, no matter how they are ranked, remain firmly in the top ten.
Storm King, the guardian of Atlantic City, is one such example. He has demonstrated the power to destroy a city on more than one occasion. The strongest storm in human history was summoned by him, with destructive power far exceeding that of the most powerful nuclear bomb.
The Iron Titan is another example. During the alien invasion, his Iron Legion single-handedly withstood more than half of the enemy's attack. No one would object to ranking someone who could single-handedly ignite a world war at the top.
And then there is the Mother of Life.
However, her ranking in the top ten wasn't based on combat prowess. On the contrary, this superhero has no combat record whatsoever, and no one has ever seen her use violence.
But she has conquered dozens of incurable diseases, including ALS, and shared hundreds of drug formulas free of charge, benefiting all mankind.
Everyone revered this extraordinary genius; if you really wanted to do the math, the Mother of Life had saved more people than the Angels of Light.
The Angel of Light has a lot of haters online. Conspiracy theorists think he's a hypocrite who might reach out and wipe his hair at any moment, and then start ruling or destroying the world.
But perhaps the only ones in the world dissatisfied with Mother of Life are the pharmaceutical companies. And while they may be dissatisfied, they dare not voice it, for who knows when they themselves might need to beg this benevolent lady for their lives?
Therefore, this elderly woman enjoys overwhelmingly positive public opinion online. Anyone who dares to say a bad word about her will be doxxed and exposed the next day.
Rex and Nora were in a state as if they had just taken a booster; their legs were weak and they were so lightheaded that they couldn't find their way around.
After all, standing before them was the "Mother of Life," a living legend, and she was acting so kindly.
Mercury, however, showed no fanaticism whatsoever; instead, he was filled with worry.
Reason told Mercury that even if Immortal Technology really wanted to harm him, they wouldn't go so far as to send this person out to do it personally.
But Mercury's intuition told him that Aunt Savina's attitude was very strange and unusually friendly.
Furthermore, there is another crucial issue: the Mother of Life is one of the few celebrities who have publicly expressed distrust of the Angels of Light.
There are quite a few haters of the Holy Light Angels.
They feared that the angel of light would one day turn to the dark side, and lived in constant anxiety. They even tried every means to accelerate this "darkening process," as if they had to witness the day the angel fell and then say with satisfaction, "See, I told you so."
Ordinary people have little influence, but conspiracy theories can bring traffic, but they will forever be trapped in a vicious cycle of constant doubt and self-contradiction.
But the Mother of Life is different; she has published papers arguing from biological and logical perspectives that the Angels of Light are not human beings at all.
In that old man's logic, a high-ranking being who never reveals his true identity, whose behavior and logic are completely out of touch with humanity, and who is always full of compassion is definitely the greatest potential threat to all mankind.
With the academic endorsement of the Mother of Life, this "alien threat theory" has practically become the bible for the anti-fans of the Holy Light Angel.
Those extremists who constantly clamor that "the Holy Light Angels will eventually turn evil" have long since elevated Savannah to the status of a spiritual leader, attempting to push her to the opposite side of the Holy Light Angels.
This subtle antagonistic relationship, coupled with the recent high-profile announcement by Eternal Life Technology of its intention to cooperate with Mother of Life, makes it hard not to suspect that these capitalists are trying to unite with Mother of Life to deal with the Holy Angels.
With this background in mind, Mercury felt that Aunt Savina's kind smile was somewhat hypocritical.
In particular, the old lady started to subtly "check household registrations".
Savanna gracefully picked out several dresses for Nora, praising the colors for flattering her skin tone while steer the conversation towards Mercury: "You're both trainee heroes from Arugi Tree City, right? I heard that stubborn old man, Magic Eye, became your mentor? He's notoriously strict. Rex, you'll definitely be fine, after all, Storm King's teaching philosophy has always been very rigorous. As for Mercury… what about you? Can you adapt?"
Mercury thought to himself, "What about Nora? Why did you send her to change her clothes?"
These few sentences are just him asking about his situation, aren't they?
However, his records had already been thoroughly searched online, from his birth certificate to the number of fights he had gotten into at school, so there was nothing to hide.
"Morch is a very responsible mentor, and I have benefited greatly from his guidance," Mercury replied in a formulaic manner.
"That's good. It seems the Holy Light Angel will be at ease," Savina replied casually.
"The Angel of Light?" Mercury's eyelids twitched. He hadn't expected this "leader of haters" to bring up the topic of the Angel of Light so abruptly.
Savanna smiled, her expression unchanged. "You'll become a hero, isn't it all because of his guidance? I know about the lawsuit you're involved in; it all started when he took you away from the bar. Knowing his character, once he starts something, he'll definitely take responsibility to the end, right?"
Mercury ignored that, instead asking directly, "Didn't Aunt Savina disapprove of his stance? Why would she care whether he trusts her or not?"
"I have the utmost respect for the Angel of Light himself; his every word and action conforms to the standards of a saint." Savannah spoke gently, as if discussing some objective law. "I am merely expressing the concerns of the majority. We don't know where he came from, we don't know the full picture of his life, and we don't even know why he protects humanity. The unknown brings fear, and fear breeds suspicion. Unless we can understand everything about him, this concern will never disappear."
"Even if he confesses all his secrets, there will still be people in this world who don't believe him," Mercury insisted.
Rex, who was standing to the side, was sweating profusely. He usually acted like a quail when he saw his own father, and he had never seen Mercury directly confront a top-level big shot like this.
He was worried that Savannah would be angry, but the old man simply waved his hand kindly: "Don't worry about that stubborn minority, my dear, they have no influence on the world. Most people are just waiting to be saved, and are worthless otherwise. The Angels of Light only need to persuade those who have the power to influence the world, and that will be enough."
Rex stared nervously at Mercury, fearing that his brother would continue to argue.
However, Mercury paused for a moment, then nodded for the first time: "Aunt Savannah, you're right. Ultimately, a very small minority rules this world."
In his past life, he might have believed that "unity is strength." But in this world, it's probably hard to achieve that.
A powerful superhuman can withstand an army of millions; both productivity and violence are indeed in the hands of a few.
The anger, fear, and even worship of ordinary people are nothing more than simple emotional values.
Moreover, how can we talk about unity?
The entire federation is torn apart by partisan interests, and the law has become a tool to suppress dissent. Behind all sorts of outrageous regulations lies the power struggle between interest groups.
A doctor who sees ten patients a day can earn 100,000 yuan a month; otherwise, he feels he's wasting his education. Patients want free healthcare without waiting in line, and without worrying about medication and treatment costs.
Religious conflicts are deadly, and gender and occupational antagonism are ubiquitous. You embrace technology now, believing it to be the future, but when you're optimized by technology in the future, no one will care whether you survive.
One second you're advocating for equality, the next you might be accused of discrimination by 97 different gender groups. Today you represent the interests of ordinary people, tomorrow your child might awaken superpowers, or you yourself might become a superpowered individual.
Everyone is covered in labels, and even though they are all sparks, they burn in different directions and consume each other.
Some people believe they can compromise and don't need to lean towards any extreme position, as long as they are strong enough.
But when one is powerful enough, one often cannot even bear a single insult from another, and wants to resolve any slight dissatisfaction with fists. One thinks, "I am so powerful, why should I suffer such humiliation?"
Then a tyrant was born, and whether the tyrant's initial opinion was a compromise or an extreme one seemed to be no longer important.
It's like a line from the movie "Joker" that I saw in my past life: no one cares about other people's feelings, and everyone is screaming at each other.
This anger has no common enemy, no common direction.
Why would that golden holy light want to destroy everything? Because this world is too chaotic, and the conflicts between people are almost irreconcilable.
Perhaps, destruction is the most thorough form of purification.
The gods should be high above, showering salvation upon believers, while bringing divine punishment upon mortals who do not believe, insult, or even rebel.
These insane thoughts, as if stimulated by something, began to churn Mercury's consciousness into chaos.
The feeling of being the only one worthy of respect in the heavens and on earth surged back, more violent than ever before, threatening to completely engulf his reason. The golden holy light began to stir, seeking to completely control Mercury's body.
But a red light appeared, like a dam blocking the surging torrent of thoughts.
Golden light roared deep within his consciousness, filled with resentful rage: "Why won't you accept it! Why won't you become a true god! If you so desire, you can tear this rotten world apart right now and reshape everything according to your will!"
Mercury responded with his mind: "Trying to overturn the table when you can't play the game is something only a coward would do."
