Why is his holy light red?

Chapter 22 The World's Second Strongest Superpowered Person

"The people in Black Olive change frequently, but now, these three leaders basically call the shots."

The screen lit up, displaying three crude headshots of prisoners side by side.

Mercury's gaze swept across the screen, lingering on the leftmost photo. He frowned slightly. "There are women in this godforsaken place? And they don't separate male and female prisoners?"

Black Egg grinned, his newly healed facial muscles twitching, making him look somewhat strange: "Boss, don't you know that superpowered people are implicitly considered LGBT? A lot of them have the ability to turn from male to female and from female to male, or even into robots, so by default, there's no gender distinction."

Mercury asked, "Didn't you say there were thirty-seven gender categories to choose from?"

Black Egg said, "That's online. Who cares if you go to jail? Black Olive is self-sufficient. If it were divided into such small parts, it would be difficult to hire prison guards, and the cost would be too high."

"This damn place is fucking dark."

Mercury cursed and gestured for Black Egg to continue his introduction.

Black Egg pointed to the woman's photo: "Her nickname is 'Shadow Demon.' Her ability is to manipulate shadows as weapons. She can not only use the shadows of living people as puppets, but also directly steal other people's shadows and transform into their appearance. She can even imitate superpowers for a short period of time. No one is sure if this photo is her real face. In prison, she identifies as a woman, and most of the female prisoners will seek refuge with her, hoping to suffer less."

Mercury ran his fingertips along the edge of his phone, raising an eyebrow: "To go to the trouble of protecting a group of women in a place like this, this lady has quite the moral character."

"There's no way we're that kind." Black Egg shook his head and lowered his voice. "How could there possibly be a greenhouse in Black Olive? Every now and then, Shadow Demon has to 'pay tribute' to the other two bosses, and the tribute... is the girls under her command. You could say that with Shadow Demon around, these girls at least manage to survive."

Mercury sighed inwardly, realizing that it was ultimately the law of the jungle, where the strong prey on the weak. In this world of superpowers, not being strong enough was truly like living in hell.

Black Egg's finger swiped to the second photo, which showed a burly man with a face full of scars and covered in rough animal markings.

"This is Jaguar, his ability is beast transformation. His group calls themselves the 'Beast Gang,' and they have the most members. Normally, beast-transformation type superpowered individuals aren't considered top-tier, but strangely, Jaguar's abilities have recently skyrocketed for some reason. Along with him, his henchmen seem to have collectively evolved, becoming incredibly ruthless."

"Is that even a question?"

Mercury stared at the screen and said with certainty, "One person suddenly becoming stronger can be called a potential explosion, but a group of people evolving at the same time? It's definitely because they took some kind of banned drug that enhances superpowers."

When his gaze fell on the last photo, Mercury immediately frowned.

On the screen was an elderly man, over fifty years old, with no hair growing on his head, and his aged skin covered with dense black Bible verses, even on his eyelids.

"How did this old madman end up in Black Olive?" Mercury stared at the face in disbelief. "I thought he should have been lethally executed more than ten years ago."

Mercury knew this person was called Volcanic Rock without needing Black Egg's introduction.

An extreme racist terrorist.

Its ability is physical transformation, giving it two different forms: rock and magma. It is almost immune to physical attacks.

Before Mercury was born, this old man had planned a large-scale massacre of ordinary people, committing crimes against humanity.

Back then, apart from the Holy Angel, no one was his match. This old man was known as the second strongest superhuman in the world.

Black Egg clearly didn't know much about the old man's past, only his current situation in prison: "This old man is the most senior member of Black Olive, and his henchmen are the most loyal. He doesn't usually cause trouble, but he's definitely the most prestigious person here."

Mercury thought for a moment and said to Black Egg, "For something like volcanic rock, there's no need to use such cheap contraband. He's not the person we're looking for. Just don't mess with him. Our target is the Jaguar's beast gang. Tomorrow, we'll see what these beasts are like."

Black Egg immediately switched to being the straight man: "Big Brother is right!"

"Stop just flattering me." Mercury wasn't buying it. He urged, "If you can use the internet, use it more. Get me a few accounts. First, lay the groundwork for the Federation's collusion with capitalists to sell drugs. Get the conspiracy theory going. You know how to do that, right?"

Black Egg nodded repeatedly.

"Don't worry, big brother, I know this best. You know the 'I can't breathe' joke, right?"

Mercury exclaimed in shock, "You did this?"

Black Egg said proudly, "No, but I did make a few videos, and they were incredibly popular at the time. Also, I managed to get two large LCD TVs during the free promotion."

Mercury asked in bewilderment, "If you have the superpower to project images directly onto a screen, what do you need an LCD TV for?"

Black Egg sighed and said, "Back then, my capabilities weren't up to 4K high definition."

"Then just do your best. I'm after results."

Having played the role of an unscrupulous boss, Mercury was in a good mood. After climbing to the top bunk, he soon drifted off to sleep peacefully.

Black Egg, with his massive size, lay on the lower bunk with his legs dangling on the ground. Normally, this position would be quite torturous, but Black Egg didn't seem to care at all.

In the darkness, he repeatedly touched his face, which had just been cured after being discharged from the hospital, and, as Mercury had requested, began posting anonymous messages online until late at night before finally closing his eyes.

The next morning.

The piercing sound of the electric bell almost shattered Mercury's eardrums.

The two men had just sat up in bed when, a beat too slow, the heavy police batons slammed against the iron bars, making a loud clanging sound.

Outside the door stood the corrector, Morgan.

The black guy with "bad guy" written on his forehead was looking through the fence.

Mercury had assumed this man would try everything to cause trouble, since he was new to the Black Olive Center and had plenty of opportunities to make mistakes.

Morgan did nothing.

He simply looked Mercury up and down, a cold smile on his face as if he were looking at a dead man.

Mercury knew this man must have been plotting something all night, but Mercury couldn't read minds, so he could only be extra cautious and counter each move as it came.

Wash up, assemble, roll call.

Nearly two hundred prisoners lined up in two rows in the empty hall.

These people are truly diverse in appearance, and many of them are hard to recognize as human. No wonder Black Egg said that there is no way to separate male and female prisons here.

Morgan, wearing hard-soled leather boots, checked the names one by one as he followed the queue.

When he reached Mercury, his boots stopped.

"Mercury Anderson. Oh, the new guy." Morgan raised one eyebrow, his tone exaggerated, as if he had just met Mercury.

He turned to face the two hundred-plus prisoners and said loudly, "Listen up, everyone! This is Mercury Anderson, the son of the famous investigative journalist Al Anderson, a very important figure personally greeted by the Angel of Light!"

A slight commotion arose within the ranks.

Morgan's smile deepened. He raised his long baton and gestured towards the crowd: "I remember the files say that many of you were brought in by his father after his father dug up evidence of your crimes. And a few others were broken by the Holy Angels and thrown into the black olive branch."

"I know what you're thinking, but I'm warning you, all of you better watch yourselves and absolutely do not think about revenge. This is someone protected by the Holy Light Angel, do you understand?!"

These sarcastic remarks were clearly meant to sow discord; the method, though simple, was very effective.

As soon as Morgan finished speaking, hundreds of fierce gazes, like rusty nails, were fixed on Mercury. Undisguised violence, murderous intent, and boiling resentment almost materialized around Mercury.

Using someone else to do your dirty work, that's incredibly insidious.

Mercury gritted his teeth and stood ramrod straight, meeting their gazes. He didn't see much of a threat in ordinary superhuman criminals.

But amidst that chaotic malice, one gaze stood out distinctly.

Mercury turned his head, his gaze passing over the crowd, and met a weathered old face without a single hair. His face was covered with densely packed biblical text, making it almost impossible to see his true appearance.

Volcanic rock, once the second strongest in the world.

The moment their eyes met, Mercury felt a burning sensation penetrate his skin, surge from his heart, and instantly flow throughout his body.

Mercury felt his body temperature rise by half a degree in an instant, the heat as if it would burn his blood and bones to ashes.
