The steps leading to the sewers weren't long, and they soon reached the end.
Lorraine waved his shield and looked around. The light spell attached to it illuminated the surrounding space clearly, and he quickly recognized his current location.
They were in the main passage of Frostvale's sewer system, with a walkway on each side wide enough for one person to walk on, and bottomless sewage in the middle.
Lorraine looked down and carefully examined the footprints on the ground. They crookedly walked towards the right side of the passage and disappeared into the darkness at the end of the line of sight.
He glanced in that direction and vaguely remembered that there should be a fork in the road after walking a while, which would make it difficult to follow the footprints.
"They're heading this way."
He gestured to the two of them.
"Okay, be careful."
Anya nodded slightly, tapping the surface of the triangular shield with her hammer. The holy light embedded in the shield lit up, illuminating an area behind the group.
"Whoosh—"
A slight sound swept through the darkness not far to their side, and the three of them stopped in their tracks.
"There's movement!"
Lorraine reached out to stop Eileen behind her, then tilted her shield in that direction, and the light quickly illuminated that section of the passage.
A gray rat was squatting in the corner of the opposite path, gnawing on something it didn't recognize.
When it was exposed to the light, it squeaked and shrank back, then dropped what it was holding in its paws and darted into a crack in the wall next to it.
"A rat," Lorraine sighed.
Without the short guy livening things up, he felt like something was missing, and he even felt a little nervous.
Don't be so alarmed.
Eileen poked his back with the end of her staff in disgust, while she herself bit her lip tightly, wearing a tense expression as well.
On the contrary, Anya, who was bringing up the rear, was the calmest. She carefully observed the surrounding environment and would occasionally use the faint light emitted from the holy emblem to check the marks on the passage walls.
"Let's keep going."
The three of them walked along the path for a while longer.
As Lorraine had predicted, the main passage split in front of them, becoming a crossroads.
He cautiously stepped forward and discovered that the footprints left by the adventurers earlier had disappeared at the edge of the path, as if they had jumped over them here.
"Should I jump over first?"
Lorraine estimated the distance between the two paths and was sure she could easily jump across them. Anya, who could fit into that gear, should also be fine. It was just that Eileen might have a little trouble.
"Wait a moment, let me take a look."
Anya crept sideways from the back of the line, squatted down beside Lorraine, and carefully examined the footprints on the ground. Then she stood up, closed her eyes, and whispered, "Great Lord of the Dawn, please light my path... With your glory, discern good from evil and dispel falsehood!"
As soon as she finished speaking, the holy emblem on the triangular shield instantly emitted a burst of light mist, which fell gently onto Anya's face.
She opened her eyes, which had turned into brilliant gold, carefully examined the passages on the left and right, and finally made a judgment: "That thing is not on the other side. It has run into the passage on the left. Its energy is very strong. Be careful."
"I'll come, stay close."
Lorraine gently put his arm around her, straddled her body in an arc, switched places with her, and then turned and walked towards the path on the left.
He first slung the shield and rusty throat back onto his back, then leaped over the foul-smelling sewage and landed steadily on the opposite path.
After landing, Lorraine cautiously removed his shield again, looked around to make sure there was no potential danger, and then waved to the two of them: "Come on, I'll catch you."
"You go first."
Eileen gently raised her chin.
Anya did not refuse. She also put away the triangular shield and the mace, moved back a bit to lean against the wall, took a deep breath, frowned at the smell, and after a moment, leaped forward with all her might.
She only realized something was wrong after she jumped up. Her half-body armor and shield hammer were too heavy and were pulling her down, her toes almost touching the water.
"careful."
Lorraine stepped forward to meet her, steadily supporting her back with her hands and pulling her into her arms. Then, she set her down cleanly and continued to be vigilant about the surroundings.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
"Um.
""
Anya raised the triangular shield in front of her, shifting her attention away from Lorraine and turning it back to the darkness deep within the passage.
Lorraine looked at Eileen, whose eyebrows were furrowed like a pretzel, and shouted, "Can you jump over here? Don't be reckless! If you fall in, you'll stink like crazy, and I don't want to fish you out."
"No way!"
Eileen gritted her teeth, imitated Anya's movements and leaned against the wall. Just as she was about to jump over, she stopped abruptly at the edge of the path.
She had to admit that, with her own strength, she would most likely do as that guy said.
Looking at her expression, Lorraine knew that this girl definitely wouldn't dare to jump.
"Keep an eye on your surroundings. If you sense anything is wrong, speak up immediately, and I'll go carry her over."
He gently patted Anya, signaling her to be careful of her surroundings, then placed his shield and longsword on the ground before jumping back up.
"What are you doing...!" Eileen was about to speak.
Lorraine bent down, wrapped one arm around her shoulder and back, and hooked the other hand around her knees, lifting her up horizontally.
"You talk too much nonsense," he said.
Eileen watched as Lorraine pulled her into his arms, and unconsciously wrapped her arms around his neck, curling her body against his chest.
"You...put me down right now!"
She felt her face burning up.
Lorraine suppressed a laugh and looked away from her head. He felt that even if he let go, Eileen would still cling tightly to him.
"Don't move, or I won't be responsible if you fall."
He said it casually, but still tightened his grip on her arm to make sure she wouldn't actually fall from mid-air.
Then, bending her knees and leaping, Eileen could feel Lorraine's strong arms tightening beneath her. She instinctively closed her eyes, the sound of wind rushing past her ears, followed by a slight tremor upon landing.
"What...did she fall asleep?"
She opened her eyes and found Lorraine looking at her with a smile.
His face was too close to hers; she could even see a faint old scar at the corner of his eye and the shadow of his eyelashes in the light of the shield.
"You're the one who's asleep!"
Eileen gritted her teeth and climbed off him. When she landed, she felt her legs go slightly weak, so she quickly grabbed the wall to steady herself.
