Chapter 57 Hearthfire Tavern
Irwin took the list, but instead of immediately opening it to check the goods, he turned to the side and gestured for them to proceed.
"The accommodations have been arranged. Please follow me. You can leave the supplies here, and I will arrange for someone from the warehouse to come and handle them."
He led everyone into the temple, saying as they walked, "Although the Spring Festival is still some time away, there is a lot of preparation work to be done. The entire temple is very grateful that you all came to help."
Lorraine walked at the very back, listening to his ramblings while looking around the interior of the temple.
The interior space appears larger than the exterior, with a soaring dome, sunlight streaming through stained glass windows, and a faint scent of incense in the air.
Irwin led them through the central hall, turned into the right-hand corridor, and led them to a spacious reception room.
"You may rest here for a while. Lunch is still an hour away. After lunch, I will take you to your lodgings." He nodded to Anya and then turned and left.
The short man plopped down in a chair, let out a long sigh, and said, "Pip thinks this Erwin is even more nerve-wracking than that Viscount."
"A common problem among clergy."
Eileen stretched and plopped down in a chair, but before she could even settle in, Anya flicked her head.
"Ouch..."
Lorraine walked to the window of the reception room and looked out. Outside was the inner courtyard of the temple, where several servants in gray robes were unloading goods from a cart. Their movements were quick and almost silent.
Looking at the scene before him, he felt uneasy all over; a strange sense of oppression prevented him from relaxing.
Although the temple was very nice and Erwin was very welcoming, it was so quiet and spacious that he felt completely out of place.
"Anya, I'm not staying here."
He turned and said.
"Pipe doesn't live here either! Piper snores at night, and we don't want to disturb you!"
The short man came up with an excuse quickly, but Lorraine knew he wasn't used to this kind of place either.
They belong in fields, taverns, and lively campfires, not in quiet corridors and incense-filled rooms.
Anya was gently gathering her friend's loose hair when she heard this. She looked up, nodded without much surprise, and asked:
Where are you planning to stay?
"There's a Hearthfire Tavern next to the Adventurers' Guild. I plan to stay there for a few days first, and then find a place where I can stay for a longer period."
"What about Eileen's teaching?" Anya asked.
Hearing her name called, she squinted at Lorraine and said, "Yes, you live outside, how am I supposed to teach you?"
"You can set a time, and I'll come over on time every day," Lorraine said.
Eileen frowned and looked away, carefully examining the matches in the fireplace for a few seconds before reluctantly saying:
"...I'll move out too."
"Eileen?" Anya was taken aback.
The red-haired mage rested his chin on his hand and said dejectedly:
"It's too stuffy in the temple, I don't like living there."
"Alright, let me know after you've settled in. If anything comes up, I'll have Renn come find you. Eileen, you can arrange your own time to teach Lorraine magic."
Anya rubbed her head and said with a smile.
Eileen snorted, stood up from her chair, and walked towards the door with her staff in her arms.
"Let's go," she said. "Lead the way to the Hearthfire Tavern."
Lorraine glanced at Anya, and after receiving her signal, she followed her out of the reception room.
The three of them passed through the central hall and returned to the entrance by the same route.
A cold wind blew in from the street, carrying the aroma of toasted bread and various other smells. These smells, which were not usually pleasant, made Lorraine feel that she could breathe more easily.
To be fair, the city's infrastructure in Frostvale is quite good, especially the upper district, where Lorraine barely smelled any manure.
Eileen stood beside them, holding her staff and watching the passersby. When she noticed Lorraine looking at her, she impatiently tapped her staff with her fingers.
"What are you looking at me for? Lead the way."
Lorraine curled his lip; he really couldn't stand this woman's sharp tongue. If he didn't need her to teach him magic, he would definitely...
"The pub is a bit of a walk away, but it'll be perfect for a meal when we get there," he said.
If you have to be patient, then be patient; it will happen sooner or later!
The three of them left the upper town along the stone-paved road.
The Fireplace Tavern hadn't changed much since he left; the outside was still bustling with people looking for work, making it quite lively.
Lorraine pushed open the tavern door. It was much larger than Hef's shabby tavern, but the furnishings were similar; it was still a tavern in the end.
There weren't many customers drinking at this time; only a few tables were sparsely occupied.
Some were men who couldn't find work and came here to relieve their boredom, while others dressed as adventurers gathered together to discuss matters. In the corner sat two dwarves, shouting loudly in a language that was incomprehensible to them.
However, Lorraine understood most of it...
Behind the bar stood a lean old man with a small mustache and a shiny white towel draped over his shoulder, pouring drinks into the customers' glasses.
He looked up and saw Piper, a familiar smile spreading across his face, and teased:
"Hey, Piper's back? Last time you said you were going to make a fortune, I thought you'd been stewed by goblins."
The little dwarf rushed to the bar, tossed a few silver coins on it, and stood on tiptoe, grinning as he said:
"Pip's tough, he'll survive! Two shots of ale, please..."
He turned to look at Eileen and added:
"Another glass of juice, and a super barbecue feast."
"They really struck it rich."
The bartender chuckled and cursed, nodded to the two people standing behind him, and turned to pour drinks.
They found a table against the wall and sat down.
Piper picked up his beer, gulped down a large mouthful, sighed contentedly, and said:
"Gustav used to go to Ironforge and learned a trick from the dwarves there; his ale is absolutely authentic!"
"If Haifu heard you say that, he'd beat you to death." Lorraine picked up the glass and took a sip. To be honest, it did taste better than Haifu's brew.
The three had barely sat down when a young-looking woman came over, bent down, and placed several small dishes from a tray on their table.
She wore an apricot-yellow bodycon dress, its waist cinched tightly, perfectly outlining her smooth curves. The hemline only reached above her knees, revealing a section of her calves encased in wool stockings.
"Little Piper, it's been a long time." She smiled, her eyebrows curving upwards.
The little boy looked up at her happily and said, "Lily! Piper missed you so much!"
Lily reached out and lightly patted Piper on the head: "Come on, you always say you miss me, but you never give me a proper tip."
She straightened up, smiled politely at Eileen, and then looked at Lorraine.
The firelight from the fireplace shone directly on Lorraine's profile, outlining the distinct lines of light and shadow on his face.
His numerous brushes with death had given him a composed demeanor, which complemented his undeniably handsome face...
Lily's heart skipped a beat.
She secretly observed the seating arrangement of the three people, and when she noticed that he was far away from the red-haired woman, the corners of her mouth slowly curled up.
