Chapter 22 Encounter
"Shall we light torches to illuminate this place?"
Piper slammed the warhammer into the ground, placed his hands on the handle, and looked eager to get started.
"Hmm, who knows how many traps are ahead? This place is spacious and suitable for fighting. Lighting torches will lure them all over."
Lorraine took a few steps back and returned to the side of the mine tunnel they had just come from.
He then pulled the torch from the side of the package and wedged it into a groove in the rock wall.
"laugh."
The flint struck twice, and sparks flew out and landed on the torch head, instantly igniting the grease-soaked rag.
The surrounding darkness was dispelled somewhat, but the end of this space was still not visible.
"Leave one where you came from, so you don't get surrounded later," he explained.
Piper agreed.
They still have five torches; he has one, while Piper carries four.
Halflings have no home, so they carry all their belongings in their large knapsack, and Lorraine still doesn't know exactly how much stuff is inside.
"Let's walk in together, don't get separated. When we reach a place where this torch can't reach, we'll add another one."
"good!"
The two of them crouched low and stealthily made their way forward for a while, until they could barely see the torches at the entrance anymore, but they still didn't see any signs of kobolds appearing around them.
Could there be some other passage inside?
They've been gone for so long, how come they haven't seen a single dog-headed person? They can't all be hiding, can they?
Lorraine looked around and saw a slot for inserting torches on a wooden shelf not far away.
He nudged Piper with his hand, signaling that he wanted to come over.
Having received a response, he quickly stepped forward, inserted his other torch into the slot, and lit it.
Flames ignited.
"#&idiot@%&!"
A rapid, low growl came from above Lorraine's head. Startled by the sudden sound, Lorraine quickly gripped the rusty throat and looked up.
A kobold dressed as a scout was angrily shouting and cursing.
It sat on the wooden frame above Lorraine's head, rubbing its eyes incessantly with both hands, tears streaming down its face, as if the firelight had blinded it.
Kobolds are afraid of light?!
The thought flashed through Lorraine's mind.
No wonder those two at the cave entrance looked so listless; they must have been blinded by the sunlight and could only feel better by closing their eyes.
"At the top!" Lorraine whispered.
Without time to think, his body reacted before his brain. He raised his left hand and used the spell he had just learned the moment he saw it.
The magic was drawn out of the body and crawled along the blood vessels to the palm of the hand. The hairs on the back of the hand stood up, and a tingling sensation emerged from the palm.
"Smack."
A soft popping sound rang out, and blue electricity flashed from Lorraine's fingertips, striking the kobold at a speed imperceptible to the naked eye.
Lorraine's Lightning Pull
The electric current exploded into several arcs on its old leather armor, then quickly solidified, swelled to the thickness of a finger.
Just as they had finally adjusted to the light of the fire, the sudden burst of electricity made the kobold's eyes light up even more.
The stinging pain in his eyes and the burning electric current in his body made him scream in agony.
"ah!--"
Lorraine instinctively grabbed the lightning chain, feeling a strong pull that lifted him into the air, propelling him towards the kobold.
The kobold's terrified expression grew larger in his eyes, and he raised the rusty throat with his right hand.
"puff."
The longsword easily pierced the kobold's body due to inertia, and the electric chains binding it became even brighter the moment they made contact.
"boom--"
A bolt of lightning flashed out, sending the kobold flying. The fine electric currents struck Lorraine's face, making him feel itchy.
Is this spell really that powerful?
He looked at the kobold who had died on the spot and thought to himself.
"wrong..."
Holy crap!
A feeling of weightlessness washed over him, and Lorraine realized he was in mid-air. He struggled to twist his body in the air, trying to land in a safer position.
"Don't be afraid, Piper is here!"
Lorraine was caught by the halfling, and the two rolled twice on the ground to dissipate the force.
"Whoosh—whoosh—"
He gasped for breath, his hands trembling as he helped himself up from the ground, and thanked Piper with lingering fear, "Thanks, brother."
"Haha! Don't be so polite with Piper!"
The short man chuckled, picked up his warhammer from the ground, and then realized that something was amiss with his surroundings.
"Uh...were there this many lights around us when we came here?"
"What light?"
Lorraine looked on in confusion.
The mine, which originally had only two torches, was now lit up with more than a dozen faint red lights, though it was unclear when.
They were still rapidly approaching the two of them.
"Be careful!"
The sound of wind cutting through the air came from the darkness, and several afterimages appeared at the edge of the torch's field of vision, attacking Lorraine from above.
"Why are you targeting me!"
He immediately threw himself to the ground, then rolled several times, quickly hiding behind a broken wooden box.
"Click—"
Five bone spears landed around Lorraine. Although he dodged them in time, the environment was too dark, and the bone spearheads did not reflect light, so he inevitably got his arm grazed.
"Pip, throw torches at them!"
"I can't see anymore!"
Lorraine touched his arm and felt that the wound was not very deep, but the familiar itching sensation came faintly again, and the spears were also smeared with poison!
"Be careful, most of their weapons are poisoned!"
"Okay!" Piper was trying to light a torch.
After reminding Piper, Lorraine immediately reached for the backpack behind her.
The antidote had already been placed in a pre-prepared side pocket, stuffed with rags for protection, saving him precious time.
"Pop—"
He bit open the bottle and drank the entire antidote in one gulp. There was no need to save it now; if a fight broke out, he might not have another chance to drink it.
As he tasted the bitter herbs in his mouth, Lorraine's heart calmed down instantly, and the images of the spears falling around him flashed through his mind.
"When you picked me up just now, you were facing your left front!"
A flame lit up.
Piper threw a torch in the direction Lorraine indicated. It flew through the air in a graceful parabola before landing on the ground with a "thud."
The impact caused the flames to burst into flames for a moment, illuminating everything around them and bringing with it a few cries of pain.
"%& Bastard!"
"@#&%brute!"
Lorraine strained to keep his eyes open, and even though the bright light stung his eyes in the darkness and brought tears to his eyes, he still managed to imprint the enemy's image in his mind.
"Six in total, follow me!"
